I think I'm goning to start looking for irons, and i'll probably buy them in the winter, or when ever they go on sale. I currently have my dads old King Cobra II's (about 7 years old or so). I'm an okay golfer, usually in the mid to high 80's, but haven't been playing to long. I'm gonna look to spend 4-600. I was thinking of getting Big Bertha's what do you guys think/suggest?

OK I am by no means an equipment expert or even close, so take this with a grain of salt. I would say for a 16 handicap, that the Big Berthas may not be for you. They are Callaway's "game improvement" iron, and are designed with a big, heavy, clunky bottom of the club designed to consistently get the ball WAYY up in the air. I have the Big Bertha sand wedge and I really like it, it is my go-to chipping/pitching wedge, but whenever I am in a hard lie I get nervous due to its thick design. Having said that I think that you could still probably use them well, but may not be able to work the ball as well as you want at your level.

I think for you the Callaway X-20 irons may be the better option if your looking to stay with Callaway, but they'll probably go past what you're looking to spend. That is why I didn't get them. I ended up with the Cobra FP irons, and I would recommend them. I think the price is very fair on them, and I feel they will grow with my game better then the BB's would.

hmm thats good to know, and something to defintly consider. I haven't been golfing to to long, and these cobras aren't to bad. I'm 16 years old and will be jr. this year, my senior year there moving golf to the fall(I can't playing spring do to baseball), so perhaps i'll wait untill next summer right before golf season and see where my handicap's at. BTW i've looked at some of the new cobras and i'd def consider that too.
EDIT: what are some irons i might look to get that i would "grow into", I think with regular play this summer/fall, and next i will drop my handicap and be around a 13-11. So what are some irons that i could probably hit with my current game, but as i progress could hit the clubs like there meant to be hit. all help is appreciated :)

You and I are in somewhat of the same boat. 18 handicap here and looking for that next step in golf club sophistication (my word. Others might not agree).

I am considering -- and thus wondering whether any would be a fit for you -- Callaway X18 or X20, TaylorMade r7, Mizuno MX25, new Ping G10. . . And the big step I am thinking of is either the Titleist 755 or 775.

Others have thoughts on these clubs? I have read all the reviews on this site.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
