New to the board as I am looking for good advice.  I want to purchase new irons. I am 42 years old and grew up hitting blade/small head type irons and have always made good contact with the ball.   I am an 80-90 golfer and am wanting to improve my game.  About 12-15 years ago I purchased over-sized irons (Taylor Made) based on the recommendation of the pro shop.  Looking back, I think it was a big mistake as my game and been very up and down the past 10 years and have seemed to have lost swing focus and all feel with the club.  I currently hit Callaway X-22 irons w/Memphis 10 shafts - these were recommended to me by the traveling Callaway Golf Fitting truck about 4 years ago.   My swing speed is 100 mph.  Have a local Golfsmith and Golf Galaxy but not sure how good they are at fitting me to what I need - have not been overly impressed in the past.  Any suggestions/direction is greatly appreciated.

Lots of options, but most folks take the easy not-so-smart option. That means walking into your nearest golf superstore and expecting them to give you a fitting based on what you need - the only trouble is, they tend to give you clubs based on what they have in stock and what they think they can push in terms of cash. That doesn't always make for a happy combination.

Better option is to see a certified club fitter who can look at your swing, listen to your concerns, advise you based on your needs and budget and quite possibly save you a lot of time and effort in the long run. It's no secret that people play golf on golf courses - and on most golf courses you have professionals - and some of these professionals are very good at fitting clubs.

So which option do you take? The quick and easy option, or the do a bit of homework, ask around, find out which pros are recommended, test demo clubs and hit real golf balls outside, which may be a bit further out than your local golf store - option?

Hmm...that's a tough one.

    • I just got my shotscope v5 watch and used it yesterday. Its fairly accurate at the course I was playing so I did not use my rangefinder at all. I was able to calculate what club i needed from that.

    • Why?  You would never be waiting on me.  I am one of the fastest players you will ever run into on the golf course.  I am extremely fit and almost always the first to the green and the first to the next tee box.  When I play with my 16 year old step son who is a 3 handicap, he tells me to slow down.  Also,  what does it take me?  40 seconds round trip to walk off 30 yards?  (which is the max I walk off)  I like to have a look at the break around the hole which helps me to hole out chips which I did for birdie from 27 yards just the other day.  I also do this while waiting on my playing partners to catch up to me so you need not worry about being irritated, I can pretty much guarantee you that you could not keep up with me on the golf course.  🙂
