So I am thinking of adding a new wedge to my setup. Currently my wedge setup and distances are as follows:

PW 47* ~130-135 yds
52* ~ 115-120 yds
58* ~ 85 - 95 yds

Here is what I am debating:

1) bend the 52* to 50* and add a 54*. Thus having 47*, 50*, 54*, 58*
2) bend the 58* to 56* and add a 60*. Thus having 47*, 52*, 56*, 60*

I am leaning towards bending the 52* to 50* and adding the 54* because I think my 58* is my favorite club and I have gotten pretty accurate using it from 90 yds and less.

Also has anyone noticed any performance issues once they have had their irons/wedges bent (aside from distances)?

I understand that wedges are fairly personal and I don't expect to make my decision based on your responses, just curious to read your thoughts.

Cheers,
Miz

I don't know how getting clubs bent works or if it changes anything, but I have always found a 60* a little too much loft, so I got mine bent to 59 and its perfect. I would go with
47*, 50*, 54*, 58*
Driver Titleist 905R 9.5* (Stiff Prolaunch Blue 65g)
Hybrid: PT 585.H 17 * (Stiff titleist 75g shaft)
Irons: 695.cb 3-9 ( Dynamic Gold S300)
Wedges: 735.CM 47* PW, Vokey 200 series 50.08 Oil Can Vokey Spin Milled 54.10 Tour chrome, Vokey Spin Milled 58.08 Oil canPutter: Wilson Staff Kirk Kurrie #1[CO.....

If you change loft on a wedge, it will also change the bounce. Can't remember which way it was though? One of the clubmakers on this board should be able to tell you...

I recently went with the 3 wedge package myself. My PW was at 47°, so I built me a custom set of Snake Eyes 655 black forged wedges in 51/7bounce, 56/14bounce and 60/12bounce. I feel it's been one of the best 'in the bag' improvements I've ever made. I never carried a 5 wood so I had an extra slot that needed filling anyway. Plus I was able to build them myself for less than buying an 'of the rack' 3some.

My thoughts would be that delofting a club by bending will slighly reduce the bounce angle in 'normal' swing mechanics, but I could be wrong on this.

That's correct, and it's a degree for a degree exchange. So if you bend the 58* to 56* you will decrease the bounce by 2 degrees as well.

Bounce is useful for keeping the club from digging in the sand or soft ground. So, how much it will affect you depends on the conditions you normally play in (fluffy sand or hard clay/sand mix, soft fairways vs. hard packed conditions). You want more bounce for the former in each case and less for the latter. How you swing is also important ... more bounce generally fits a steep approach angle and less bounce goes with a shallower approach, but personally, I think the conditions and personal preference are more important. Bending the 52 to 50* would be my call for two reasons. One: having less bounce on an "attack" wedge should work pretty well (you probably shouldn't go lower than 5 or 6*, however). Two: Never mess with your favorite club!

Exactly. That's why I love the 7* on my 51. Most of the courses I play in my area usually keep their greens pretty soft and receptive, so from around 110 in I can 'usually' make a good crisp strike dance around really nice. I've also found it very usefull on many short greenside chips from a tight fringe or walked down rough.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
