Should I be sorry?

No, there is no excuse for the businesswoman, I think the woman who did the business messed up big time, no question about that. But because I have big doubts  - seeing her attitude towards customers and their wishes, I doubt she would be able to get the right club and with all kind of hassle added to it I am willing to accept the other club - if it was a club definitely not for an average beginner, I would not accept it but nowhere can I find info that the club and the specs I got is wrong for me. If I still don't find satisfaction with the driver in a few months, I will sell it and get the Altitude. I got a very low price so it should be possible to sell it for a decent price later this year. But I still suppose I will be able to deal with the club as well as I did on the demo day when I had no idea how to hit it.

I've just sent the story to the Cleveland customer service by email asking for their opinion. Maybe they will confirm that the Custom is not good for me and that I should get the right one. With that message directly from Cleveland folks, I would address the businesswoman again and accuse her of brainwashing me.

I think you would get better results faster by actually speaking to someone rather than texts and emails. Like many have said, you did not receive what you originally requested, and there is more than a strong chance that the store you purchased from and/or Cleveland will rectify that for you.

All cool now! Today I went to the driving range where I bought the driver - demoed and ordered and bought. The woman was there. She was apologizing and said the configuration I ordered was not possible to get from the UK, they don't offer that combination of loft, shaft, etc. I know that is not an excuse. I told her that I had already decided to keep this club.

This problem has two aspects. Getting what I didn't order. There is no debate about that. Under normal circumstances one should not accept that. No problem.

The second aspect is getting a driver that might be better than the one I ordered. That confused me and led to all kinds of imaginations and fears. In the end I decided to keep this driver. Today at the driving range it showed the difference between the drivers is not as big as I feared. I hit a  series of slices with it, which must be strictly my problem, not weight or loft of the driver. With the Altitude, yes, it might be a tiny bit better , but still slices would be slices. So now I am happy with the driver and ready to learn. Anyway, I absolutely agree with you guys that one should not accept what they didn't order. Next time I won't.  I just felt tempted to give the more advanced driver a chance.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
