Hopefully this is Ok posting this ......we used this format at my work. The 2014 Ryder Cup at The Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire, Scotland, will take place from Friday September 26 to Sunday September 28, 2014. The Ryder Cup is a match play event, with each match worth one point. The competition format will be as follows: • Day 1 (Friday) – 4 foursome (alternate shot) matches and 4 fourball (better ball) matches • Day 2 (Saturday) – 4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches • Day 3 (Sunday) – 12 singles matches On the first two days there are 4 foursome matches and 4 four-ball matches with the home captain choosing which are played in the morning and which in the afternoon. With a total of 28 points available, 14½ points are required to win the Ryder Cup, and 14 points are required for the defending champion to retain it. All matches are played to a maximum of 18 holes. If a match is level after 18 holes each side is awarded half a point. simply answer as many questions correctly. 16 questions many are multiple choice and one bonus question. Good luck All entries must be in and posted by September 25th 10:00 PM sharp- eastern time! So cut and paste the questions or list your 17 answers clearly! Hard to do on phone. Will do from computer later. For first question, do you mean which team will be first to win a hole.... Or who will win on hole #1 of the first group? I assume the former.

Randell, good question, the intent was for who wins the entire first match, win or lose which team for question 15. Match 1 thru 3 might all be halves, no winner, so it might be match 4 that has a win/loss for example. BTW you can edit your answers up till tonight, we'll use the edit time stamp to determine the winner, who was correct first. Wish we had more contestants.........

If the host doesn't mind me highjacking this forum - does anyone know of a contest which picks every match??

Because the ryder cup format and subsequent team captains do not announce who is playing, in what order and what combinations of players are playing, you are preyty much at the mercy of USA or Euros for matches 1 thru 28...and of course there is also an element called "Halves" with no players names attached to any of them. and this could be done in advance of the tourney itself.

0 points here! Lol. Plus I answered that only 2 players would play both morning and afternoon for the Americans tomorrow. I believe that is a physical impossibility, unless we forfeit one match! Duh.

    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
