I started playing golf about 13 months ago.

When I started, I purchased a used set of old forged MacGregor's (M565's) for $50, and have played with them this entire first year.

A few weeks ago, I went and purchased a barely used set of Nike Vapour's.

I was so excited, but when I got them to the range, as easy as they were to hit, I really disliked the 'feel' coming off the club, and I was losing considerable distance. The place I purchased them from allows you to test the clubs for up to 30 days.

I ended up returning those for some Calloway X-22's. I liked those much better, however, when I looked down at the long irons at address...it just felt like I wasn't going to be able to hit them, and consequently, I rarely ever did.

I returned those also, and decided to get fitted for new clubs (I'd previously never been fitted, and at 6'4", that was always something that was in my head).

I spent the weekend hitting balls at Golfsmith. I probably put in close to 3 hours there over 3 days.

After 3 days of hitting balls, the ones I hit the most consistently were the Mizuno JPX 850 Forged. Unfortunately, they were a lot of money!

I did buy them. I don't get them for 2 weeks though. I feel like a kid the night before Christmas!

I was very surprised to see there was a significant difference b/w different clubs.

I tried a bunch out on Friday, and made note of the ones I liked.

I went back Sat and Sunday, and again got a bunch of 6 irons out, and hit them without knowing what brand I was hitting. The same ones worked best for me all 3 days (aside: I also hit the G30's and the Titleist AP 1's well; I hit these Mizuno's significantly better, and wanted forged since that's what I've played thus far).

I still have a higher handicap (never actually figured it out), but, it's my short game that is responsible for my higher scores (over the last 2 months I'm shooting b/w 84 and 87 on my home par 70 course.

I never spend money on myself (always on my wife and kids), and the money wasn't an issue. It's the first nice thing I've bought for myself in probably 20+ years.

The only downside is, I'm forgetful as heck, and have been known to leave my clubs on the previous green from time to time. Not overly stressful leaving a 50 cent iron on the 7th green. But, losing a nice new iron would really ruin a golf outing!
