At my golf lesson the other day my instructor told me that in my set up my right foot should be set square to the line for coil and my left foot should flare out to help generate speed in the swing.

If I set both my feet square to the target line and then flare the left out the left toe moves ever so slightly inside the line.

I've experimented with moving my left toe up to level but this results in a draw. However if I leave the left toe as is I feel too open.

I guess that the question is, does it matter about the alignment of your toes or is it the alignment of the heels, hips and shoulders that are more important?

I know that this sounds a little confusing, but I can't think of a better way to explain this. Can anybody understand it and help me out?

Setup your stance first, make sure it is proper distance, shoulder width for short irons, mid irons are about 2 inches further apart, long irons and woods are another 2 inches apart. Once you got your stance, rotate your left foot from you heel about 10- 20 degrees towards the target. That is what I was taught from my pro.

OK thanks. Thats what I thought. Its just that this feels very open to me but I guess thats because I've been used to setting more square and any changes will take a while to get the feel of.

I try to set up square to the clubface. This avoids all the potential problems with aligning to the target.

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.
