Is it a new course or something?

...and to answer your question...I don't think so.

A handicap differential is calculated for each round you play. An average of your lowest X number of differentials (where X depends on the number of rounds you've played) is multiplied by...I believe .96...to get your USGA index.

In order to calculate your differentials for each round, the course slope/rating is used...

((Adjusted score - course rating)*113) / course slope

I have the same problem with the course we play on Wednesday nights for our league. It is a shorter course. 31 par (5 par 3 and 4 par 4) and 2007 yards. It has been open for years, but is not rated. Unfortunately I just can't submit these scores.

That's incorrect. They simply have to pay a local golf association to come out and rate the course. This can be done - and usually is - before a new course is even opened.

That is the same thing I have always heard. Rarely does a decent course open that is not already rated.

The course we play opened in 1964. It is more of an after thought since they have a very nice course there as well. They just don't really care about the "precision" course. It's a nine holer that is good for beginers and women. It is enough of a challenge that I can still have a good time on my Wednesday league, but I would not complain if we chose to move it elsewhere.

Is there any reason the course wouldnt give you the ratings then? These two courses I play are 1 year old and two of the nicest in the area. (built by the same company) They are not printed on the cards, and I asked the pro shop and "we dont have them yet" ????

As I say this, I check the website and they finally updated it with the ratings. Weird that I played there 2 weeks ago and they wouldnt divulge the information.

It might have been a budget thing. I see you are in Cleveland. As I understand, the ecconomy is taking a hit there similar to us in the Detroit area. I know that the course I play are way down this year in revenue. It's possible that they just weren't worried enough about it to spend the money right away.

Hey. What are factors that can affect a course rating AFTER it has been rated (and therefore play harder/easier than the official rating?)

And

-deeper rough?
-faster/slower greens?

What else?

And how much does this affect it?

I ask because I have played a course that seemed easier than another similarly rated course MANY times.

Anyone else experience this?

A course's rating is not exactly the most scientific setting as it is based off how a group of golfers of different skill levels actually played the course, therefore course ratings are not an exact science, but rather an approximation based on different players performances there.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
