New clubs

Hi, I have been playing golf for 6 months, using Maxfli Revolution irons, standard length. During a recent lesson, I was told that they are not ideal for beginners and that I needed longer shafts. Anyway, I've now purchased a used set of Ping G10's at 0.25 inch longer and green dot. Tried them tonight and found them totally different......really struggled for any consistency. How long does/should it take to become au fait with new clubs? Thanks

It really depends on the person and how much time you invest into working on your swing/game. I used to have a shorter set of clubs, going to a longer driver really brought out a wicked slice I thought was just a fade with my old driver. However, I never saw much difference out of my short irons. My long irons I started hitting more shots fat versus skulling them or hitting them thin like I did with my shorter irons. The answer for me was time. More than jumping out on 18 with my buddies. It took going to the range after work, getting to the course an hour and a half before my round to practice and chips, and practice practice practice!

You're so right, I have never had great patience.....golf is the first sport I have really struggled with. I don't play on the course much as I get annoyed with my lack of ability but I try to hit a few hundred range balls every week. Thanks.........the Ping club head's do seem huge though!

Unless you developed some bad habits in the Maxflis, you should get used to them in fairly short order. I don't want to put a time on it, but it shouldn't be more than a few sessions on the range. And that's pretty pessimistic. I've gamed a set of players irons I borrowed one day after playing super game improvement irons my whole golf life and I figured it out after a bucket or two. I googled the two sets and, depending on whether the Maxflis were the 1998 or 2000 model, you're moving about 10 years into the future and from game improvement to super game improvement (about 200 points of Maltby Playability Factor; it's one metric that tries to measure how easy an iron is to play). You should find it easier to get the ball into the air and have it be more consistent (once you're comfortable with them). The extra quarter inch difference isn't huge. I'd hazard to say issues may just be confidence related, so just put some time in and maybe get a lesson if you feel like going down that road.

I saw a picture of the two irons and the Pings look so much friendlier: thicker soles, deep perimeter-weighted cavities, and big heads. They seem like they'd be a pleasure to hit. I think you're in good hands with them.

Bang on! Confidence or lack of in my swing is certainly the problem as are bad swing habits! I'm determined to keep working at it though, and my next lesson is booked in. Thanks for your help and advice!

Thanks, very much appreciated! I've just dropped my clubs off at Ping to get the loft adjusted from Maroon to Green......all done for free......top service! I've uploaded my swing and have had some good advice to work alongside my lessons. What are your thoughts on internet lesson subscriptions such as evolvr?

I've never had an internet lesson and one of the most pivotal things for me in my learning was something a pro physically did for me in helping me develop a feeling in the swing, something you obviously can't get online. That said, people who've taken the evolvr have been pretty vocal about their satisfaction and the level of instruction is pretty high. I might consider it since the pricing is pretty good compared to a quality live lesson.

Getting the Pings adjusted,great move.  One of the best things you could have done.  For me getting irons fitted for lie was a turning point for me.  Made all the difference in the world.  All of a sudden I could hit an iron straight.

As for the huge head, embrace the shovelieness.  Nice to have that big ol'e honkin chunk of stainless down there at address.  Gives new meaning to the thought of "Comfort Zone".  You'll love'em.  I love my G20 grain scoops!

You're right, the shovel heads are certainly what I need! It's my swing which needs the attention and the "more forgiving" Ping's should help my progress. Even though they are a few years old the build quality and feel are excellent........no substitute for quality I suppose. I don't know what other manfacturers are like but Ping's customer service appears top notch.......when my swing deserves new clubs I will be giving them my hard earned cash! Matt
