Hey guys!

I'm a junior in highschool and i'm a 10 handicap.

I play with Mizuno MP 54's, stiff shaft, and callaway hybrid graphite regular, 3 wood RBZ stiff shaft and a driver amp cell regular.

I notice that especially on my hybrids and driver, they seem to always go much higher than my 3 wood.

The contact on these higher shots feel the same and still feel really solid. I'm usually able to get around 260 ish yards of carry on my driver, but that's it. It goes fairly high(9.5 loft) and then it drops down and doesn't roll.

Same thing happens on my hybrids when i hit them pure, just shorter of course.

Now, I'm usually not the type to "blame" the club before my swing, but I just find it odd that i'm making very solid contact, and only these 2 specific clubs are going much much higher. I know what pop ups are, and these definitely aren't since they are still going reasonably far, for me.

SO my question is this. Is this very high ball flight maybe caused by a certain swing approach on the hybrids and driver? Or does the regular shaft really make launch the ball higher, on good contact strikes.

Last time I checked, I was roughly around 100 MPH clubhead speed on the driver.

Thanks, hope to hear from you all soon!

It is possible that the shaft flex could contribute to higher flight.  Without seeing your swing, it is tough to tell.  In general, 100 mph swing speed is stiff for most shaft OEM recommendations.  The best test would be to use a launch monitor and try regular and stiff shafts in the same head and see the results.

Sure, shaft could explain some of that. Also the nature of the driver and hybrid heads can contribute to a higher ball flight. It is not just the loft of the clubhead. Your local pro or decent clubfitter can test and tweak what you have in a half or hour or less. The advantage of going to your pro is that he of she might be able to pick up on other things too.

Hi mchichioco,

There is no standard flex requirement between manufacturers.

Best thing you can do is get to a launch monitor.

Get on a launch monitor. I will bet, based upon how you hit your hybrids with good launch angle and spin that you have a negative angle of attack. If you want to optimize you distance with a driver you gotta have some sort of upward AoA. Higher Launch + lower spin= more distance. I see it everyday. With the AoA higher, More +, your spin will dramatically decrease which will give you your roll.

    • Fantastic selection! And very little driving between them. Fingers crossed the weather is good to you.
    • Day 20: 2026.01.22 Hit about twenty balls at the range. Quietly pleased with how the changes are bedding in, surprsingly consistent ball flight. Hoping to film over the weekend to capture new movement.
    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
