So I am always tinkering with something in my game, swing, equipment, shoes, etc. I can't help it, my OCD takes over and I'm off to the races. I have had an issue with hitting my Driver and 3 wood almost as far as each other. I do not hit the ball long. I have an average of 94 mph club head speed with my driver. I carry it about 210-215 and can usually get it to roll out to 235 (thank god I can putt). Anyways, I feel like I have to pound my driver (hard swing almost out of my shoes) to get 240 out of it, but I can pull out my Taylor Made RBZ 3 Wood, and hit it 220 easily off the ground and 230 with a pretty smooth swing off of a tee. I have gone through Multiple Drivers the past 5 years, multiple shafts. I hit the 3 wood so good that I bought the matching driver, and I have/had 6 or 7 different shafts. I hit all of them terrible, straight, but about 210 with no roll out.

Last year I go to a Demo Days at a country club my buddy's Dad is the Head Pro at and I hit the Callaway Alpha, Callaway Big Bertha, A Cleveland, Ping G25, Taylormade SLDR, SLDR Mini Driver, and the Titleist D2 & D3. The only one I hit longer than my RBZ was the Titleist and it felt great so after hitting about 70 balls with the D3 and a bunch of different Shafts (I was hitting a nice 240 yard draw over and over again with an Aldila RIP Alpha Stiff Shaft) I bought one. It was an improvement on the RBZ, distance and control wise.

But after pounding balls on the simulator all winter long it's pissing me off that I hit the 3 wood almost as far with less effort. So after all that long winded crap, my question to everyone here is this, should I look at maybe going with a Regular Flex shaft with the current driver (maybe more flex and more mph), or do you think there is something to look at with the Taylormade Mini Drivers that are out? My current 3 wood is a 15 degree with the stock Taylormade shaft ( I believe it is a Matrix Ozik or at least a version of it). I have a pretty consistant game and I have an above average short game which keeps me competitive, but it sure would be nice to be hitting 8,9, PW into greens instead of Hybrids and mid Irons. Any feedback is welcome thanks.

I think you should only get 20 yards more with the 1W than with the 3W. So, you should be getting 250 carry with your driver based upon your 230 carry with your 3W. 94mph SS should be getting that number too.

What is your ball flight with the driver? Is it a low penetrating flight? Or a high one? Does the ball balloon?

Some random thoughts that work for me.

I use the same shaft in both D and 3W - Fuji Fuel 60. D is 44" and 3W is 43". The additional length and larger head (460cc compared to 160cc), along with ball placement, affects the longer carry with the D. These are TM R11s heads.

Ball placement for me - D is just inside left heel, teed up high. 3W is slightly forward of middle, either on ground or teed all the way down.

I bought the TM mini and didn't like it off the tee. It's a 260cc head, but the stock shaft felt weird to me. Stiff flex as usual but 10g lighter. I thought it was nice in the fairway though.

Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I never slice.

I notice you tried several drivers, but not a Callaway V Series. The extra lightweight shaft may help you get more SS and hence distance. It works for me, and my SS was similar to yours. The V standard stiff shaft is only 43g - VERY light, but balanced and forgiving.

That's really light!

I'm now starting to toy with the idea of getting a properly fitted driver in place of my G15 with X100 shafts in it. I figure I have some playing room with head weight and swing weight given the 134 gram shaft. I want to see if I can actually hit it further and straighter with proper equipment.

If you have a 94 MPH club head speed, then on a really well struck ball you would get about 138 mph ball speed. With optimal launch conditions you should be carrying your driver 225-230 yards carry.

First, With t\your swing speed is on the high side of average, but not overly fast. You'd probably fit in a stock regular or stiff flex, one with a mid, maybe a mid high kick point.

If you are carrying your driver shorter than your 3-wood that just says your launch conditions are not optimized. Usually not enough loft on the driver. If you been fitted for the driver then I would check your swing. You want to hit up on the ball.

If you hit down then you will just lower the loft even more on the driver. 3-woods are made more for hitting down and/or sweeping the ball off the ground/tee.

I might have read this wrong, again, but I thought he stated that he easily hits his 3W 230 off the tee (carry)? This could imply somehow that he can get 250 from his driver off the tee? I figured the 94mph was a fluke in him not being able to swing it as well as the 3W?

94 MPH x 1.47 smash factor is 138 ball speed. Using flightscope trajectory optimizer with 138 ball spee, 1700 rpm at 17 degrees of launch he's maxing out at 228 yards of carry with the driver.

To get 250 yards of carry he would need 100 mph club head speed.

Wow, and this is already with optimum launch conditions too.

For some reason, I remembered this incorrectly. It was 106 that got 252 carry. . .

Not 230 carry, that's with run out. It carries about 200-210 with the 3 wood but I get a alot of roll. I hit it pretty low and it runs. With my driver at 94mph I am carrying about 210-215 & I get 15-20 yards of roll. When I hit one on the screws it occasionally will roll out to 250 but it is few and far between. I know I hit down on the ball, when I try to hit up on the ball I get a 210 yard balloon ball with backspin. But I definetly don't carry it 230 that's with roll Out

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
