I got myself a TaylorMade Burner driver (non-TP version) back in July and have been using with varying degrees since.
Of course, on the driving-range, it''s great and I'd say 7/10 stay straight and I'm maxing-out at about 250-260 (carry and roll).

However, one thing I've noticed (as have my playing partners) is that my swing has gotten a lot better since the purchase and has also increased in speed. Now given that when I was custom-fit for it, my swing-speed was borderline between regular and stiff, I went with the stock-shaft - Fujikura RE*AX SuperFast 50, at 46" long.

My query: will my increase in club-head speed and technique counteract such a light, long shaft? I'm finding that I need to slow my swing down in order to keep the ball on the fairway, hence a loss in distance.

You've answered your own question by saying you now must slow down to keep the ball in play. You should go and try out the same head as you have in your club in stiffer shafts.

The stock shaft is garbage, stick in something a bit heavier (65g) and a bit stiffer.

I got a Burner TP with the 75g Fujikura Rombax shaft (stiff) this year. Excellent club (and shaft)!!!
I would go with the stiff shaft since you said you've been improving a lot. I would think you could get it re-shafted with something that fits you better.

I actually have the same driver and am experiancing something similar. I was thinking of reshafting but didnt want to ruin a good thing. Im thinking of looking for an additional head on ebay and reshafting that in case it doesnt work out so well. Keep us posted with what you decide.

I'm going for a custom-fit at my local club/shop next week.

I have my sights set on the Callaway FT-i as I've been demo-ing that quite positively this week. As my Burner is 'like-new', I can trade this in so I won't lose too much money.

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
