I want to get back into golfing after 20 years and have been looking at clubs. Don't Know If I should go with sonething like used taylormade, cobra, Or adams. A couple of co-workers say just go with some Orlimar set and bag $200. Clubs have certainly improved since I was a golfer. Any recommendations on deciding on clubs? Thank you

Getting fitted is good advise, obviously, but how far are you in your return to the game? I bought a set of Callaway X-24s from Costco and have been both really happy with it and glad I spent more than just a cheap store set. That said, 2 years out, only now do I know what I would have done differently, but I also know I did choose as well as I reasonably could have, with really forgiving game improvement clubs that were high quality. I'd advise against a cheap set like Orlimar. I haven't played it specifically, but, eh. My brother bought a box set from Sports Authority for $250 and the bag is cheap crap that comes apart, the irons are OK, but the woods, hybrid, and putter are atrocious. Definitely buy used but good quality if you can. And look at past year sets. Some sell new for peanuts. Speedblade and SLDR irons were selling sub $300 on some deal sites last month. Go back another year and you can get into the low $200s. It might be good to get some great GI irons and a good 3 wood and fill out the set from there once you know what you want after a few months or a year. Great deals around Christmas.

Taylormade Jetspeed fairway woods were going for $35 the other day. Great buy.

Hello labmom, there are tons of options. How serious are you thinking about getting into golf? A half dozen times a year, or play a round every week type of thing?

Welcome to the forum @labmom

Adams and Callaway make starter sets.  Some offer "short" sets that have fewer club (the skip every other iron).  My wife got an Adams set three years ago and it has help up nicely.  The hybrids and irons are designed to get the ball in the air and are forgiving.

The Lady Solair from Callaway and Lady New Idea from Adams are popular.  I agree with the others to spend the time and get fitted if possible.

    • Fantastic selection! And very little driving between them. Fingers crossed the weather is good to you.
    • Day 20: 2026.01.22 Hit about twenty balls at the range. Quietly pleased with how the changes are bedding in, surprsingly consistent ball flight. Hoping to film over the weekend to capture new movement.
    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
