hello all -- seeing a lot of great deals on the Nike Covert Forged irons, wondering if it's worth the upgrade from my Cleveland TA5 Gunmetal irons.

never got a chance to hit the Nike's, but everything i'm reading sounds great.  i'm a picker, so i love the low bounce all the way to the SW.

however, i have no reason to part from the TA5s... i've become a subscriber of, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".  i'm hitting the TA5s great, very consistent all the way to the 3 iron and i'm working on the 2 iron off the tee (home course gets windy, so this would be a big advantage for me!!).  for each of my rounds this year, i would have broke 90 if not for my short game... a few bad chips and 3 putts (even a 4 putt) ruined my rounds.

i'm just reluctant to drop the $$ if it's a lateral move.  i know newer will be better, but for anyone who has hit (or has knowledge of) both, do you think it's worth the upgrade??  or would i be better served picking up a low-bounce wedge (looking at the RTX 2.0 54/6) to make my short game more comfortable??

any insight is welcome -- thanks in advance.

Is the 54°/6° wedge for bunkers or general chipping? I ask because it's an on-the-border loft. If it's for the bunkers, you'd do well with a lot more bounce. Like, double.

As for the other stuff, try the Nikes. They're fine clubs but anyone would be speculating about whether they would be better for you. Your handicap kind of puts you in between game improvement and "better player" clubs, so it's not an easy answer. On paper, they're fine. But you're paying a big chunk of change for clubs you've never even hit. I personally hate the look of that cavity, but otherwise I have a good opinion of Nike clubs.

Why are you so keen on these specifically, I'm curious? There's a lot of sales on lots of iron sets these days. What draws you to these in particular?

Thanks for the reply, dkolo. The 54/6 would be for chipping -- I have a 56/14 to use from heavy rough and deep sand, but I simply can't use so much bounce anywhere else. And yes, that was my apprehension, dropping $$ on clubs I haven't hit, even with the rave reviews. I like the Covert Forged because of the low bounce throughout the set. I haven't been able to find many irons with that set up... probably why it's worthwhile just to stick with my Clevelands. So I just went a much more economic route with a Maltby Tricept Red wedge (also 54/6), and sticking with the TA5s. I think this will work just as well until I start consistently shooting in the low to mid 80s. Thanks again.

Ok good luck! For what it's worth, I switched to using my 56/14 as my main chipping club this year. Found using the bounce very helpful and forgiving. Just depends on your technique. There's a few threads on engaging the bounce for chipping on here if you poke around.

    • Day 7: got out my chipping net and worked on chipping in the living room for a solid 15 minutes. Worked on mostly low shots, but mixed in a couple of high shots as well.
    • Day 228 4-4 More hip/chest turn and wrist arching. Working on hinging wrist a bit later. Foam balls.
    • Day 27 (4 Apr 26) - Worked with grandson on basic pitches/punches in the back yard with varied irons/wedges.  Wrapped up the day rolling some putts on the 30’ carpet I can set up in the yard to give varied terrain - and this carpet rolls almost too easy. A great way to figure a read and know that pace has to be near perfect to get in the hole.
    • A bit of a struggle today.  Just some thoughts/musings.  For the backswing, it is like I am never going to be moving on from this. I don't know if I can ever get to the point where the backswing isn't like over 1.5 seconds in duration. Which is probably not ideal. I would like to get to the point where I can just fling the arms back and up.  I have to feel like my hands are going to hit my right thigh from P1 to P2. If not then they like to move 2-5 inches towards the ball from P1 to P2. Then it's just bad from there. This feeling is my hands not gaining much depth, just maintaining depth from set up. From the DTL view, the hands head towards the camera.  While I am doing that, hinge the crap out of the club with my wrist only. Hinge in a way that the club is pointing at the camera at P2.  From P2, lift the hands straight up. I can get here, and still roll the club inside and get it way too shallow.  With the downswing. There isn't much here. I still can't get the flow of this or the sequencing of this to line up. It doesn't help that hinging from P1 to P2 just throws off my entire timing as well.
    • Day 550 - 2026-04-04 Practiced in the sim at a club for awhile. Did a SW ladder and practiced for awhile with my 7I.
