I am currently in physical therapy as I have been suffering from back pain but spasms on left side.  It appears we have pinpointed the issue as a intercostal muscle strain on the left side.  Also, my hip flexibility is awful.  For example, if I sit in a chair and try and put my left foot on my right knee, I cannot get it there without using my hands to pull up my foot.  I can do the right foot to left ankle with no help.  So, if I am not able to open up the left hip they are saying I am then using the back to complete swing which is not good.

So, does this make sense?

Any insight on how to improve it?

Also, what kind of misses would you expect to see with golf shots if not opening and rotating well with left hip?

Thanks.

There are few ways to improve hip flexibility, stretching and exercises.  I recommend the following:

Stretching

The stretching section is excellent.  The swing section is not that great.

Exercise:

The top is a DVD and the bottom a book.  There is a whole section that is for the hips and hip rotation.

It will take a while to get back a good percentage of your flexibility.  But if you stick with it, it will really help.  I do the stretching daily.

Yoga works wonders. Start off with some easy stretches. I would also just work out more as well.

I have read the first book about stretching - It has helped me immensely! I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it  yet. Stretching is really important to not pull muscles and improve flexibility. I also do yoga - it not only helps with flexibility, but with my temper too :)

Most of the Fredericks stretches are yoga stretches.  The Joey D workout is golf specific and has many of the same exercises that physical therapists use to improve strength and flexibility in shoulders and hips.  Joey D is a physical therapist.

Other benefits of yoga : 1. It is symmetrical and balanced. Golf is asymmetrical movement ( as is tennis, baseball, etc.). Rebalancing our body is important. 2. Yoga will help you with the hardest real estate in golf: the 5 inches between your ears. (Breathing & focus help relax the body, still the mind, control the emotions on command.) 3. Injury reduction (as we get older) is a great bonus...... Be well.

    • God I hate when golf can’t give me n+1 day of success. Drives me up the wall when my body is, FU! Im like, ok let’s check the vid. Yep too much turn, arms getting behind me. Ok, I work on that. Get the feel back for a shorter swing. Confirm with video. Then going back to arms down stuff.  Arms down, nope it’s hands out towards the ball. Oh, you get arms down better. Guess what, you don’t get to rotate and you hit 6 inches behind the ball. Yay!  Maybe I should have walked off the range and not wasted my time. I wish there was a body alert system when it’s going to a SOB for the day. 😭 OK rant over, I’ll be back at this tomorrow.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
