Today was the single worst driving round I can remember in recent golfing history for me. Basically I was hitting the ball wayyyyyy off the toe of the golf club to the point where i was almost missing the face of the club. This was more pronounced with my woods than with other clubs, primarily with my driver. It's strange because stuff like that I can usually attribute (to be honest missing it that bad is really unusual for me, but most of my problems stem from weight transfer) to lack of weight transfer on the back swing but I made a special note of transferring my weight today after the first or second hold to no real avail. The strange thing is that I actually hit some decent iron shots today as well as a few nice wedges. I also had a few of the same results with those nearly missing the grooves of the club entirely on a couple shots. I'm just curious to know what might be causing this and how to fix it if it ever happens to you guys. Thanks.

I find when I start mishitting balls off the toe of my club, my shoulders are not relaxed enough. I usually try to concentrate on relaxing my shoulders and I begin to make better contact.

I believe that when my shoulders are not relaxed my spine tightens up causing a slightly more upright posture thereby moving the club head closer to your body causing me to hit the ball with the toe of the club.
In my bag:

Woods: RPM LP 3W & 5W
Irons: MX-25 4-SWPutter: Detour

Check your alignment and ball position. With the driver, it's easy to get the ball position too far forward and this in turn can cause the shoulders to open up. Both of these factors will lead to the club swinging back to the inside before it gets to the ball, therefore any contact will be off the toe.

Your ball position will be further back with your irons which may be why you hit those alright.

That's possible, but I don't know. I do try to play the ball far up in my stance but that's so I can easily stay behind the ball and hit up into it...and I used to have big shoulder problems in terms of aiming them left but I usually am pretty conscious of where they are as well. I don't know. Maybe it was just one of those days where you can't hit it right no matter what you do.

    • I had the D-9's a while back, thought the stock Wilson grips were rubbish.  I put Pure grips on them. Pure is now out of business but available on Golfworks.  Currently some colors in stock as of today. PURE Wrap Golf Grips - The GolfWorks PURE Golf's tackiest grip, the Wrap features a perforated wrap design and is ideal for golfers that prefer a slightly softer, more muted feel at impact.
    • If he had to hit over the bunker, I'm guessing he was further from the hole, although "in front of" implies the opposite.  If that's right, that may have been the right spot for penalty relief, a single PS.
    • Day 52. Trying to work on hard pan lie pitching in the rain in the yard.
    • Did you look up any Rules before posting here? What did you learn or find? You don't get to drop (or place) closer to the hole. 16.1(c) deals with relief for Abnormal Course Conditions in bunkers. You're granted free relief for: Since you say the bunker was basically entirely full of water, you likely wouldn't get complete relief, so for free (no penalty strokes), you are entitled to "maximum available" relief. If there's a spot in the back of the bunker away from the hole where the water is the shallowest, then you can drop there. If you don't like any of those options, you can take a penalty stroke and drop out of the bunker, behind it: You seem to have played from a wrong place (nearer to the hole) and thus likely should be penalized two strokes. It doesn't sound like a serious breach, at least.
