The Stack System - A Conversation on Gaining Swing Speed

Wow, this seems pretty comprehensive.

There's a lot to like here. Seems like a "next step up" from the speed training sticks we all enjoyed last off season.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I purchased The Stack at the end of September and will be using it starting on October 31... and will report back my progress!!  About the middle of September I started using Speed Sticks again.  Focused on increasing my swing speed the last quarter of 2021 to see how much I can improve... and then will continue throughout 2022.  Apparently you have to use it or lose it!! :-)

  • 3 weeks later...

So question for anyone that has used the Stack. I just started last week, and just completed my first workout following the baseline testing.

For reference, i am using a swing speed radar (until the new mevo+ update comes out).

My driver speed using the swing speed radar is average 112 on the app (Mevo+ has me at 113-114), but the espeed calculation on the app is saying 102, with a distance potential of 281 (I can already push the ball out there that far with a decent strike). I emailed Sasho about it, and he said it is likely that the radar is picking up driver speed better than the speed of the Stack. Anyone else have this issue? I will continue the Foundation training and then measure driver speed at the end, as that is all that matters, but what I am afraid of is if the A.I of the app is going to change my workout or something due to the lower speeds it is reading.

The numbers below from the screenshots are from the baseline testing to show the speed variations between driver and the stick.

@mey123 it sounds like you may be positioning the swing speed radar incorrectly, or doing something like that to get some different readings. Your actual swing speed with the Stack will be lower because you often swing heavier clubs and they're shorter, even if they weigh the same. It's a hybrid length club.

Are you swinging the Stack through the "radar area" properly? Is it angled at 45° in front of you slightly? Do you swing as aggressively with the Stack, and with the same timing (i.e. if you reach peak speed well after what would be "impact" that's different)?

I wish they had an Android version of the app, tough to justify the price for the system plus an extra couple hundred for a used iphone/ipad too.

If/when they come out with an android version I'll probably pull the trigger.

Yeah, i position the radar where the ball would be, and at a 45-degree angle facing away from the target.

I feel like i am swinging the stack faster than my driver to be honest, so it has me so confused. I used my driver first to make sure it was positioned correctly and then used the stack in the same location. I am wondering if its the level at which i am swinging the stack vs the driver. The driver is much closer to the ground when swung vs the shorter stack stick. I wonder if i will need to actually place the radar in the location where I would place the ball for hitting a hybrid. does that make any sense LOL

Picture a beam of radar coming up from the device and swing the "clubhead" through that area. The radar you're using should be pointing at where the ball is, not positioned where the ball would be.

Also, you're probably reaching peak speed with the Stack well after it passes through the radar beam area.

So what you are saying is that the radar should be slightly ahead of the imaginary ball position, with the face of the unit (the numbers) looking directly at the imaginary ball position?

I had it directly in line between me, ball, and radar, with the radar facing 45-degrees toward he swing path (away from target), as that is what the owners manual states; "Place the Swing Speed Radar® about 8-10 inches (20–25 cm) away from the ball, directly in line with the golfer and the ball, as shown below. Orient the SSR so that it is facing toward the direction from which the clubhead is coming, at about a 45 degree angle relative to the clubhead swing path"

How is that going to pick up the swing speed at the ball and not several inches before the ball?

Regardless, you could still be reaching peak speed much later on with the Stack, resulting in a lower reading.

I know that's what the manual shows, but I've always put it so that the 45° angle projects the radar beam out toward the ball, which means having it 8-10" ahead of the ball position, too.

The SSR works for righties and lefties so it's not like it's coming out of the left front corner, the radar.

VERY true, and i honestly had the same dang thoughts on it. Reason for the setup i explained was, between sets, i quickly read that manual and saw that it stated that. So tomorrow during my next training, i will move the unit 8-10 inches forward, and face the radar towards where the ball position would be. Fingers crossed. If it doesnt work, i will end up buying the PRGR to get me through until the Mevo+ update comes.

Again, I'd also just make sure you're not swinging the Stack club differently, with peak speed being well after the ball area. And imagine passing the tip through the "radar cone". Even with a different setup, the numbers should be consistent to each other.

Do you believe 112 with your driver?

Yeah, it feels like a normal swing, so I am thinking that the speeds are a little after the radar as you mentioned.

And yeah the swing speed with my driver and the SSR are actually pretty spot compared to the MEVO+ (and GC2 at local sim). Mevo+ can have me anywhere from like 110-115 depending on the day, with the average usually around 112.

I've had enough people ask that I've set up an affiliate deal:

You can use the coupon code "IACAS" as well, and you can visit the site at https://www.thestacksystem.com?aff=99, too. All should work. If you're not seeing the discount automatically applied, though, use the first link and/or the specific coupon code "IACAS".

If they had an Android version I would have gotten this already,  but since I'm going to be getting an iPad to run E6 and my Mevo+ this fall for my simulator build, I'll probably get this for my birthday or christmas or something.

Ah, so does Mevo+ work for the Stack? I bought one of those like 3 years ago and have yet to use it (need to get on that asap).

Yes. Their new "swing training" mode will work for this. It's good, too.

    • Two things I bring up when it comes to this discussion. One is if you have let's say two towns next to each other, one has a population of 10,000 people and the other has a population of 1,000 people. Let's also say that they never play golf against each other. Only among themselves. In the first town, you have one guy who has won 15 events, then a couple of guys who won 6, a couple who won four and a bunch of people who won three, two and one events. In the second town, you have one guy who won 18 events, then a guy who won 11, a guy who won 9, a guy who won 8, a couple who won 7, a couple who won 3-5 and then a few 2s and a few 1s. Who's the best golfer? It's possible it's the guy who won 18, but it's pretty unlikely. Far more likely to be the guy who won 15 in the much bigger town.  In the same way, I view the fact that there is more parity in the 1990 and onwards world than there was in the pre 1990 world as a plus for Tiger. It's much harder to stand out if the fields are deeper, stronger, better. If there are a handful of players who win all of them, that tends to suggest weakness to me, not strength. The other thing is Ed White. Harvey Penick talked about him in one of his books. Ridiculously good at the game, but no one ever heard of him, because he got a job and didn't play professionally. There was no money in it and he needed security, so he took a job that paid him steadily. No clue how many people there are out there like him, but if he was around today, he'd be playing pro golf for sure. If he had played professionally, Penick sure seemed to think he'd have been one of the best of all time. Fred Haas played him in a college match and got stuffed. 40 years later he walked into Penick's shop and saw Ed White's picture on the wall and, after a full career playing pro golf, he said that Ed White was the best player he ever saw. Those 40 years would presumably have included at least some of Jack. I can see why people might say Jack is the GOAT. I don't agree, but I can at least understand why they say it. IMO there is no argument you can make for anyone other than Tiger to be the BOAT though. At least not yet.
    • A good option is to play the Par 3 courses. after playing an 18 -hole round. The Par 3 courses have 18 holes, we usually played only 9 holes after playing 36 holes on each of the trips we had. You may want to check out Grand National while you're in the middle of Alabama. I enjoyed Oxmoor Valley and Ross Bridge courses which are a short drive north.
    • In August, I am playing the World Am in Myrtle Beach. I do not know which courses yet, but should be a blast. Aside from that, those are the only golf trip plans, unless I play while on vacation in Destin in June.
    • Even on a perfect center hit I was receiving at most 1.48 smash factor. 10 days ago on the warming up for a round my Driver made a weird sound, I checked the bottom and it was cracked. Don't know for how long it was cracked but at least this time the crack was easy visible. Maybe it was already cracked before but with a more subtle crack?.. don't know. I'm waiting for TaylorMade to approve the warranty and send me a new head. I was using the Stealth Plus, I will take the opportunity and upgrade it to the Qi10 LS paying the difference.  On Sunday with my old Titleist 915 and softer balls I was reaching 1.5, even 1.51 on center hits. Test didn't went well. Only gained 2..3 miles, not worth pursuing. Figured out that with a ball and with a target, my path was way to in to out with this new idea, so in order to move the club in the correct path I needed to slow down to redirect the club on the downswing or aim more to the right, close the face a play a big hook.. not possible. I already play a big draw with Driver, more curvature is unplayable. Yesterday at home, with no ball messed around with a more neutral path, even swinging a little out to in. It felt a lot more in sync with the body. With a big in to out path it feels like my hands are working right, away from the body, when the body is working to rotate to the left. With the path to the left is was easier to apply force thru the hitting zone.  As always tested 10 swings with my current swing (A), and 10 with this little out to in path(B).  The difference was huge, like 12 miles faster with swing (B). I knew something wasn't right. The fact was that the PRGR was aligned more in line with the (B) path so it of course was giving higher speeds. I proceeded to align it with the (A) path and tested again 5 more swings each. Again (B) was faster but only by 5 miles. (Made a tiny experiment moving the PRGR to a more extreme in to out path and the swings register 25/30% slower for both swings, so it wasn't reading properly at that angle) Finally I moved the PRGR in the middle of both paths, and this time (B) won by 9 miles. Off course, this was without a ball and a target so.. I will be hitting the range tomorrow to see the real difference.
