I'm new around here, so first off, thank you to this community for your willingness to share your thoughts and ideas!

Background:

In high school and college I played a lot of golf, got decent enough to consistently shoot around 78-82. Somewhere along the way I stopped playing as much golf. For the past couple of years I've only played 1 or 2 rounds a year. But recently I've started back playing regularly and I'm hooked all over again.

So...my gear is old and it looks like the technology has changed a lot (especially in woods) so I need advice.

Here's what's in my bag:

Driver - Titleist 975L-FE (9.5 degree) MFS+ at 43.5"

Fairway - Titleist 975F  (16.5 degree) MFS+

Irons - Mizzuno MP-14 (3-pw) Dynamic Golf Sensicore S300

GW - some crappy Warrior Golf 52 degree

SW - Ben Hogan Sand Iron Special 56 degree (I think it's from the 70's, my dad gave it to me)

LW - Titleist Vokey 60.04

Putter - Scotty Cameron Newport 2.5

I naturally draw the ball and if I miss hit, it's left. Which is why I've used and loved the L-FE so much off the tee. When I was playing well I could hit my natural draw and could even set-up for a little baby fade from time to time. I'd like to find something newer to replace it.

Love the look and feel of my blades but I do realize that I would probably be better off with come CB's. However, things I will want in my next set of irons: thin top-line, minimal off-set, forged.

And lastly, hybrids...I've never used them and I guess I need to know if it is something that could be useful. I love hitting long irons, even off the tee on doglegs. In my opinion, nothing feels better than hitting a long blade in the sweet spot. But if adding a hybrid to my bag can take strokes off my game I'll listen.

From my early research, these have caught my eye:

Drivers: Titleist 910/913 D3

Fairway/Hybrids: Titleist 910/913

Irons: Mizzuno MP-53, Titleist AP2's (local shop has a set of each, used)

And I'll probably pick up a couple Vokey wedges to go with my LW.

I just replaced most of my bag where everything was 10/15 years old in the last year. I'm not sure what your budget is. I was told by a salesperson try as many clubs as can and see what works best for me. He also said to look at things 1 or 2 years old since I was replacing so much of my bag to keep my costs down. Once I narrowed down my choices I did a lot of price searching on the web. In the end I got a majority of my clubs brand new off eBay for a lot of savings. You will find when you try newer clubs drivers, fairway woods and hybrids have improved quite a bit over the years. I didn't notice as much of a difference with irons. Enjoy your search.

DRIVER- Tour Edge EXS 220
3W- Adams Tight Lies 2
Hybrids- Cobra F8 19 *

Utility- Sub 70 699U #4
Irons - Sub 70 739 5-PW
Wedges- Tour Edge CB Pro 50, 54, 58
Putter- Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft #11

Ball- Titleist DT Trufeel

You are probably a perfect candidate for a club fitting session.  Since your from AL, there may be some pretty good places you can research.  Pick one out and go!

At a club fitting, you can choose to buy one or two clubs at a time, (driver/FW wood) or a set of irons, or some wedges perhaps.  New technology is pretty expensive as I'm sure you already know, so filling the whole bag at one time with new clubs might be cost-prohibitive.

And personally, I'd start with driver since its the club that sets up most holes for the average player.

Welcome to TST and keep us posted on your quest to fill the bag with clubs that work for you.

Thanks for the feedback! I actually pulled the trigger on a set of irons today. Mizzuno MP-H5 (Nippon NS Pro 950 stiff) They were used but barely; can't be more than a handful of rounds. $499

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
