Have only recently had time to read up on him. Here's a couple of writeups for anyone else interested in his story. Another guy like Justin Thomas, hits it a long way, listed at 5' 9", 165.

Quote:
In the PGA Tour, Varner will join Tiger Woods as the only African American players , and given Varner’s engaging personality he is poised to be a star. He’s instantly likable, plays golf aggressively and is finally on the game’s biggest stage.

Varner also understands the reality of his situation. When the new PGA Tour season begins in October at the Frys.com Open in Napa, Calif., he’ll be a member just like Woods, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and the other familiar faces. But because he’s the last man in off the Web.com money list, his priority ranking will make it difficult to get into tournaments initially.

Raised by his father to not see race in people, Varner, much like Sifford and Woods, refuses to be easily categorized.

"I don't want to be the best black golfer or to be thought of as the best black golfer that someone has ever played with," he said. "I want to be the best player."

Harold Varner Jr., a 62-year-old car salesman, always had an inclusive, multiracial vision of the world for his son that golf helped nurture. "It takes a village to raise a child," he said.

Growing up, Varner III was deeply influenced and financially supported by both the black and white golfers he got to know at the municipal course and at Gaston Country Club, where he worked during high school.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.
