So is hissing a bad thing or does it just mean the ball is spinning?

Hissing is just a by product of the ball traveling through the air.

But in my experience it's more evident on higher spin shots full shots (with a decent amount of velocity) than just high velocity shots with relatively low spin. Some velocity is important as I would not expect 'hiss' from a high spinning, but low velocity short game shot inside 50 yards. Haven't exhaustively tested it though.

You can't hear hissing from your own shot. I never have, but I have had other players say they heard it from one of my shots as it goes by them when I pure an iron (tons of backspin).

I hit my irons great but my woods and hybrids are complete rubbish. Wierd thing is i used to hit woods and hybrids decent with great iron play. Dont know what i changed but now i hardly ever take a wood or hybrid out of the bag.
