I need to replace my 3 wood this year, and since santa is shortly approaching its the perfect time to ask for a new one. My question and it may sound dumb, but if they are both 15* what would be the difference of the 2. I am assuming head design. I spend more time in the lighter rough then I do in the fairway so I am thinking the hybrid is the way to go.

Any suggestions or info that can be shared would be greatly appreciated. If it matters I am looking into the pIng G10 series of either the hybrid or 3 wood.

One of the big differences between fairway woods, and hybrids is shaft length. Hybrids are designed to be more like irons, than woods. Of course, you could order the hybrid extra long, but that can be problematic. It really depends on your game. Which is going to be better for you in the long run?

If you want a club to hit par 5's in two, go with the 3 wood.
If you need more control on long shots, tee shots on short holes, etc go with the hybrid.

Good Luck!

Generally, a 15 degree hybrid will be easier to hit than a 3 wood and certainly easier to hit out of the rough. One reason the hybrid is easier to hit is because its shaft is a little shorter. You will probably hit the hybrid more consistently more often than you will the comparably lofted fairway wood. While you may hit the fairway wood a little farther due to its longer shaft, because you probably won't hit it as consistently as the hybrid, the hybrid may be a better choice for you.

Manufacturers are using every bit of technology to make 3 woods easier to hit ( see the new models such as the Titleist 906F4, as well as models from Callaway, Cobra, Mizuno, etc. ). But the design of the hybrid makes it easier to hit than the 3 wood in almost every condition, especially for those of us with slower swing speeds and with swings that don't always allow perfect contact between the clubhead and the ball. Also, and you may laugh a bit at this, you can chip very effectively with a low lofted hybrid. I hope these thoughts help.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
