I'm proud to say that my hometown, Rochester, NY made #10 on the list:

Did your city make the list?

Congrats, Roody!

To calculate which cities were best for golf, we enlisted the research skills and resources of the National Golf Foundation (NGF), the industry leader since 1936 in providing relevant data and analysis on the business of golf.

That criterion above reads awesomly, but Rochester, NY was cold in 1936 and cold last time I was there 60 years later.

Dang cold!

Brrrrrrr...

JK> Thanks for the post -- good info.

Yeah, it's definitely cold this time of year, and if I had to name a downside it would be that we can't golf year-round up here. But May through November the temps are great. Not too hot, not too cold.

#18 on the list. I can agree - golf is actually really cheap around here.

Have to say Edinburgh Scotland area, more courses there than anywhere in the world.
It is where the game began , Muirfield set up the first rules of golf and East Lothian has the finest golf courses in the world and some of the most exclusive courses.

45 Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, OH

I'm kind of surprised Cleveland made this list, my traveling league plays 2 courses in Cuyahoga County, most of the better courses are private clubs. Maybe they should have said northeast ohio since Cleveland is kind of crappy for golf, but the surrounding area is not bad at all.

The closest course I've played to Columbus is Longaberger and its one of my favorite courses I've played.

Boston @ 44.

Its kinda funny because there are no real good courses in Boston, Quincy, or Cambridge. All that is mostly urban areas with a few munis. All the good Ma courses are in the Worchester (which is pronouced Wustah for those not around here. Just a pet peeve but it drives me crazy when people pronouce it Wooster or Wor-chester), Western Mass, Plymouth, and the Cape. I live on the north shore about 15 min. from Boston and I have had no golf trips to the Boston area.

I am surprised that Maui, or other Hawaiian islands are on the list. And Anchorage, AK is on there, go figure!

Wow, Tampa Bay at number 17?!?! I find the golf courses there to be horrid, they're all flat, even flatter than the ones here in palm beach. Also surprising that Palm Beach isn't on there, with the four courses in PGA national, and a bunch of Nicklaus designed courses (including a public one).

First it is Worcester (no 'H')...and secondly one of the best courses in the state is in Quincy, Granite Links. And in Brookline is THE Country Club. George Wright is a great muni course.

But I think they consider the entire metro area which probably would include plymouth being only 45 minutes away.

This list is total BS now that I look at it. At number 48 they pretty much have an entire tristate area with NY, NJ, PA. Sorry, those are states. It lists NYC, which to my knowledge has maybe one golf course in the entire city.

I can say that Rochester is not a fluke. We've got probably close to 80 courses in the area, many are good quality, and the prices on most of them are very reasonable. That, and we're home to Oak Hill Country Club, site of several major golfing events over the years, including the 1995 Ryder Cup, the 1980 and 2003 PGA Championships, the 1984 U.S. Senior Open, the 1989 U.S. Open, and soon the 2008 Senior PGA Championship.

We also have hosted a regular LPGA event for the past 31 years at Locust Hill Country Club, and as of 3 years ago we now also host a Nationwide Tour event at Irondequoit Country Club. It's a great town to be in if you're a golfer.

    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
