My grandmother introduced me to golf when I was eight. I was so repulsed by it that I gave it up until I was 14 when my best friend started to pick it up. I have been playing avidly ever since.

My old man introduced me to it when I was 7, he took me to a par 3. I was demoralized by him hitting the ball onto the greens, and I'd hit a little dribbler every time. So sometimes I would cry and stomp off... I played on and off until two years ago - when I took the tip of "opening the clubface" - which I interpreted to mean leaning 10 degrees to my right side, effectively doubling the loft of the driver - and I immediately began getting the ball up into the air.

Two years ago, and year before last, I started playing regularly with my buddies - 15 times a year, perhaps. We were all bad.

Then this year, I started taking the game seriously. It's now demoralizing to my buddies when I play because I boom my drives past theirs and get on in regulation, and so on... but I still am easily disheartened myself when playing with a better player.

I hit the ball twice as far as my father, now - but he still kills me with his short game and putting. And he doesn't lose as many balls, either. We're about even, sometimes I get him by 2-3 strokes.

"Shouldn't you be going faster? I mean, you're doing 40 in a 65..."

A friend I went to school with from 1st grade through high school. I still recall how he laughed when I teed the ball up in the 1st fairway before hitting my second shot. I've learned a lot since then, but he has passed away. When I am on the course I'm not sure if I should bless or curse his memory.

I was introduced to golf by my father and my uncle. I started playing a pitch and putt course at the same golf course I play on now. After playing it a bunch of times and getting tired of the same 9 par 3 holes, my friends and I moved up to the regular course.

My story isn't touchy feely either. I watched golf for years on television without ever having played. When I was 52 and a year after I retired and after some practice on the range and 3 lessons my barber took me out the first time. My first drive went in the water but I had a 9 on that par 5. Ended with a 63 on the first nine.

I was going to start a thread like this but found this one after looking on other pages.

Like most other things in my life I had to go to someone else to learn the game of golf. I had an interest in the game for a long time. Mostly I just liked hitting the ball and seeing how far I could hit it. Then one day when I was in Tennessee visiting my Aunt and Uncle I went to the golf course with my Uncle to "caddy". Mostly I just rode around in the cart and watched. The following year for my birthday my Uncle made me a set of golf clubs. Since then I've really had an interest in the game. I remember my first trip to Tennessee after finding out I was getting golf clubs for my birthday. My Uncle took me to a driving range and we spent probably 2 hours there hitting golf balls. He showed me how to hit all the clubs and then we practiced putting. Then when we got back to their house I hit some more golf balls in their back yard. I was excited to have my own set of clubs. That spring/summer my mom signed me up for free golf lessons from the City Parks and Rec Department. These classes covered everything from the rules to hitting the ball.

For one summer I played just about every weekend with my other Aunts and Uncles that lived here in Ohio. My family would make trips down to Tennessee every summer and I would make sure I took my clubs with me so I could play the course that my Aunt and Uncle lived on or any other course my Uncle wanted to play. He usually beat me pretty badly. Him and I had some fun together. I played a couple really nice courses down there with him.

So I guess you could say I've been playing for about 10-12 years. I enjoy the time I spend on the course no matter how good or bad I play. To date my favorite round of golf I've played was a few summers back me, my cousin, my little brother and my grandpa played together. My cousin and I took the afternoon off of work and met up with my grandpa and my brother and played. It was probably the best time I've had on the course.

I started after I decided to quit watching baseball, football, or basketball. The players of those sports really started to disappoint me. They couldn't so much as answer a simple question with even a small degree of sportsmanlike etiquette. You'd see their names in the newspapers all the time - and not for the right reasons.

Anyway, tried the game and was soon bit by the golf bug!! 'Spent a lot of time, money and frustartion in the meantime, but I'll never give up on the game.

Now if JD (Daly) wouldn't prove me a liar what with all his headlines, I'd feel all the better for it ...

when i was 6 or seven, we lived in canada and my dad didn't have a great job. he was really into golf, but didn't think it was fair to go to a range or play 18 on the weekend when he was not at home during the week. he would take me to the range, on the way explaining how i needed to be quiet while we were there. he bought me a cheap junior set, and would let me swing at a few balls, never correcting me. i started watching golf on the weekend in order to spend more time with him. we moved to illinois, and i didn't play. now in wisconsin, we played 4 times two summers back, and then last summer we got a membership to a club. i still was really bad, but now hitting balls at the range, i'm hitting it straighter and farther then him (my handicap right now reflects the 120+ I shot last year, my first time seriously swinging for 20 rounds) we now take golf trips (florida last year, ireland or scotland in a year.) i took up golf to bond with my dad, and it will been great making fun of my mom and sister for 36 holes a week

I got into golf big time because of Tiger. He made the game soo fun and i wanted to be like him. He grew up on public courses and that really made me want to live my dream after his. God Bless Tiger and what hes done-because hes grown the game to epic lengths.

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

My dad used to go out on Sunday mornings with two of his friends and came back every week at about 12-2pm. So one day I just decided I wanted to play with him so he got me a 7 iron and a putter and I would just mess around with those until I got used to it enough to play a few rounds with him. He was my main teacher and after a few years of playing, only found this out fairly recently, I was constantly getting offered free lessons because of my smooth, easy swing but only trusted me with a few people to influence my game. Now with his help I'm the only freshman on my golf team and am starting to break par with the come of the new season.

So basically just a small father-son bonding story

I started playing when I was 9, at an old 9 hole, par 3 course. I was only 9 so I learned how to hit the woods then. I would hit driver into every hole. I cant remember one single score I ever made when playing on that course, it was just pure enjoyment of the game. I only remember wanting badly to get on the greens in one shot(I cant remmebr if i ever did?), since then Ive been hooked

I don't really know who introduced me to the game. The first time I played it wasn't really a full round or even a full 9 holes. It was about a month after I graduated HS ('95), a few friends and I "played" just so we could get beer off the cart girl we knew.

About a month later I played my first actual round. It was at my family reunion down in Florida. I shot about a 125. And that is a very loose 125. But I do remember getting one par that day. The next day we played a scramble and my uncle gave me a ton of tips and I got 2 pars by my self.

By the end of the next summer I was a 17 handicap. The following summer about a 14. The next, a 12.

10 years later...I'm a 12.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
