I've been Playing Golf for: 1 year

My current handicap index or average score is: 105
My typical ball flight is: draw
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: push

New to posting on this forum but have been avidly following this forum for some time!

This is my first year playing golf, and I am absolutely obsessed.  Aside from not being able to put the golf club down (I even swing at home), I love to read about technique and watch hours and hours of instructional videos.  This has been a fantastic forum to read!

Lately, I've been working on a revamp of my swing -- given this is my first season, I've realized my swing has had a lot of faults.  So these were the things I tried to work on:
1) shallowing of club on downswing -- this was difficult to practice and I've been swinging thousands of repetitions without the ball and doing pause swings
2) initiating downswing with lower body and with left shoulder separating from chin; trying to swing left instead of flipping the club
3) flattening my wrists at top of backswing and aiming to get it flat upon impact aka best attempt at Hogan supination and trying to pivot with body

I would greatly appreciate some comments and advice on my video below.  There are 4 swings in total -- the first 2 are without the ball, and last two (starting at 2:30) are with the ball.

My problem / question is --- I'm pretty happy with how my 2 no-ball swings look (minus fact that club is slightly across line at top); the club shaft shallows, and I get enough lag so that my club returns to the original takeaway at address (0:13 and 1:15).  HOWEVER, once I have a ball on the ground, I feel that my downswing disintegrates and my form falls apart.  I can't quite detect what is happening here.  If you look at the last 2 swings with the ball, it seems that I am either not clearing my left hips enough, or perhaps early releasing -- I don't have the lag as much as I do in the first two swings, and the 'triangle' formed at the bottom of the downswing before impact has shrunk (see 2:41 and 4:38)  My path also looks much more 'inside' than before; my arms seem to be much closer to my body.

Any advice please?  Thank you.

Welcome to the site, you have a nice swing. Post a face on view if you can.

Your hand path is too vertical on the downswing and your body stays too closed. It's going to be easier to shallow the club if the hands more down and out as your body rotates.

This would be a good video/drill for you to check out.

Thanks very much Mike!  I worked on this drill today.  I also realized that I tended to come up/get out of posture in my downswing, so I need to work on swinging with the body and keeping arms passive.  Is the right feeling such that you are squatting into the downswing, and swinging left with the pelvis?  That is what I am feeling.

Feels will vary for each player but I don't think you should be doing any "active" squatting on the downswing. From the top open up the hips, left the knee rotate left of the target as the weight transfers into it.

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲

    • Why wouldn't it have? It's not like you were playing it as a 145yd par 5 and made a 2 or something.  Or not like it was playing 50yds to a temporary green or something either.
