Yesterday early in my season I shot a 79. I barely got off the tee, I recapped my tee shots and probably only hit 3 good ones and 2 ok. The rest seriously handicapped me and I was able to make things happen with great ball striking, scrambling and putting. Over the last 3 years I have struggled with A consistency with my driver and B power. I would say I am a long ball hitter or at least was. For instance yesterday's round instead of driving it on the par 5 last hole I played it like a three shot hole and hit 5 iron off the tee (about 220), 6 Iron (about 200) and wedged it on the green. I still have plenty of distance with my irons.

Now here's the problem, I use to hit my driver 290 to 310 now I am more of a 250-270 which I can more or less hit with my 3 wood. My driver ball flight use to be high and long with a draw, now it's low to mid with a hook like flight. Even the odd one I push or hit straight seriously lacks the fire power I use to have. Physically I am in the same shape (29 years old) if not better then 3 years ago and still have maintained my distance with my irons.

My question is what gives? Anyone else have a similar problem?

Ideally, find a good instructor and hit off their Trackman. Seriously, work on what they want and see if swing speed increases.

I was in a huge slump a year ago and got my swing speed from like a 95 mph back to about 108 in just an hour, experimenting with some feels with a local guy. I didn't realize how far in-to-out I was swinging. I was shocked actually when I saw the data.

I basically just figured it out myself, I wasn't actually listening to the guy. He wasn't that good.

I pretended to listen, but basically experimented and saw if the data changed. I remember being surprised what feels I was using to increase speed. It was counter intuitive for me. But Trackman's data encouraged me to go in a certain direction and it helped.

Stop wasting your time. Your body can only handle so much mileage. I basically solved in one hour what would have either taken me an entire season or never to figure out.

But yea, find a good instructor. 5SK for example. Hit off a Trackman too.

Good advice from @JetFan1983.  I'd also suggest that you post a video in the Member Swings sub-forum, here...

Yes definitely start a swing thread. I forgot about that. Plus those are just fun to have anyway.

    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
