Hi guys,

Just looking for some views ASAP pls. I am a 9 handicapper who has be using Nicklaus Bear Irons for 12 years and am looking for a new set.

I have read good stuff about both the X18's and 775.Cb's, and also some Ping irons.

But I am unsure which way to go, I am not buying new and so can't realy go and try out each of them.

I am looking for something that will be forgiving and give me a bit more distance than my existing clubs. The problem is that I don't know what forgiving clubs and non-forgiving clubs feel like so I don't know how to gage it!!

Which clubs would you recognise guys?

Thanks

if you like the look of Ping irons - try the i10's - they're new but you may find someone offloading them on the 2nd hand market

Mizuno MP-57s I believe would help you grow and you get down inside the 5 range in a year or two. The 775.CBs are great clubs too. If you want to stick to callaway, go with the X-Forged for your handicap. I've heard the x-20 tours even a 20 handi can hit well. Have hit the i5s before, pretty nice club, the i10s are smaller and less forgiving, so you might wanna hit those as well. See what works well and looks the best to you, and best of luck!

Well, considering your handicap, I would recommend something more like 755 or even 695.cb which are both great clubs, as they are still forgiving, and are great feel with good workability.

Would they be more forgiving than the Nicklaus Bear irons I have been using do you think?

I am 27 and had them since I was 15, I am not even sure if they are cavity backs or blades? They don't look like either??

If you are looking at Titleist's then check out the 735 CM, they are combo irons, cavities in the longer irons and blades in the shorter. I demo'd them today at the Roger Dunn's here in Keihi, Maui (on vacation) and they felt great. I just wish I had the money for them

hi. hitting balls is the only way you will know which clubs feel good to you. if i was you i would look around my local driving ranges and have a look at what clubs that have in, then ask to hit some demo irons in the ones i like eg the 775 and x18 but also try some others you like the look of, say 4 models or even different shafts and then narrow that down to the ones you like the feel of, you never know they may even have a part x set in or take your other set in as part x

The Titleist 775s are about to be discontinued, which means they should be available at a substantive discount. They are great irons. Also, Cobra is discontinuing the FP line of irons. I know single digit handicap players who use this iron to great effect. I've tried it and like it a lot. These irons, as well as the 775s, should be a real bargain in the marketplace.

Just to let you know guys, I have just bought a set of 775's! Ex demo set, paid £200 (RRP-£595) for them (aboout $400), hardly a scratch on them.

I went a golf discount shop to hit a few clubs and i loved the 775's. I hit Callaway X 20's, Wilson Ci7's, TM MB's, Mizuno MP57's.

I could not hit the MP 57's at all, felt all wrong as did the Taylor Mades's. The X 20's were very easy to hit but I kept tugging them left.

I was split between the Wilsons and the 775's, but opted for the latter in the end as they fely great in my hands and gave me more feedback than the Wilsons. But I must say, they are by far the easiest set of irons I have ever hit, basically swing back the club and bring it thru roughly in the direction of the ball and off it flew!!!!! Excellent distance with them but I couldn't tell if I had miss-hit the ball until it landed and I gaged the distance.

I have just been the range and hit my old clubs followed by the 775's to judge the difference in length and I am hitting about one club difference, i.e. I am getting 150(ish) yards from an 8 iron with the 775's, with my old clubs I would be hitting a 7 iron to get that distance.

SOME I AM WELL HAPPY, THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS

Yes I do, and they are great, I hit them about 15 yards farther...now to get a momentus to increase the club head speed

Wedges, if you want forged check out the new Callaway's or some Mizuno's. If you don't care if they are forged or not I would suggest Titleist Bob Vokey's, or Ping Tour or Ping Tour-W. I have the Tour's and when you hit them solid they feel good, and you get quite a bit of spin.

Here's what I play:

Congratulations on getting your new irons. I hope you enjoy the 775s as much as I have.

To make one further suggestion: I would recommend the Titleist Vokey Spin Mill wedges, especially the 56 or 58 degree. They seem to fit seemlessly into my set of clubs. Good luck.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
