I recently got fitted and want to buy a set of irons online to save some money (preferably eBay, something used but in good shape). I hit the Poject X LZ 6.0 in a few different irons and achieved the ball flight I am looking for. However, I need +1/2" length and 2 degrees flat which really narrows my search. Are there some other shafts that would be comparible that I could consider to help broaden my search?

Thanks

I'm not sure how different shaft types would help you get what you want.

The LZ 6.0 could be extended a half inch at the factory, and the 2* flat would be a bend to the club hosel... not really related to shaft type.

And, what specifically "narrows my search" ?

Sorry, I should have explained myself a little better. I am not wanting to buy new from the factory. I'm looking on eBay, or 2nd swing. there aren't a lot of options that are 1/2 long and 2 degrees flat, so if I had a couple other shaft options that were similar, it would help.

Im sure I'll have to end up getting a standard set and taking them somewhere to get them extended and the lie changed.

@CameronJ,

The PX 6.0 LZ stands for Loading Zone. The LZ version has a stiffer tip and butt than standard PX shafts, with internal microsteps which allow more flexing or "loading" in the midshaft area. According to video clips and PX materials, this gives decent launch, slightly lower ball flight and higher spin than standard PX.

I stopped by a golf shop at lunchtime, and talked to one of their fitters about the LZ comparison, and similar shafts. He gave two.

  • TT Dynamic Gold AMT.
  • Nippon Modus 105. The fitter plays this shaft. He has trouble getting the ball up with irons, and he says the Modus gives good launch and spin without ballooning the ball.

On my own, I found data on the KBS shafts. The KBS 105, designed to split the difference between the KBS Tour and KBS Tour 90, appears to have similar performance to the LZ.

As for your fitting specs, Callaway Preowned had this:

Apex CF16 irons 4-PW for about $1,000 w/
 Aerotech Steel Fiber i110 Graphite / 2* Flat (Red) / +1/2 inch

Don't know if shaft and irons will work for you...

This is just the information I was looking for, thank you!

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
