I currently play ap2 710 and my ball striking hasn't been where it needs to be.  I found a good deal on a set of callaway x hot 2 irons and was curious if anybody has has played both and could give me a comparison

What is the nature of your ball-striking problem? Is it an end of summer problem, or a multi-season problem?

As far as comparisons go, the heads have similar ratings on the Maltby Playability Factor. AP2 MPF = 548 and X2Hot MPF = 589. Both fall into middle-of-road Game Improvement category for user-friendliness.

Further, we would need info other than the clubheads in question:

  • What score/how much over par do you shoot on average?
  • Were you fitted for the AP2 710?
  • How far do you hit your AP2 7i?
  • What are the shafts and flexs for the AP2 and X2Hot irons.

The X2Hots are not a good deal if they don't fit your swing. Some mix of swing review and iron fitting would be in order.

X2 Hot and AP2 irons are much different kind of clubs. AP2 is a player's cavity with some forgiveness while the X2 Hot is more of a game improvement iron. The X2 Hot will fly higher, longer and be more forgiving on off center hits than the AP2 710.

@Riggins44, what's your handicap?

    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
    • Day 31 (2 Jan 26) - Usual Friday men’s group shootout - good day of shot making  as most shots were right on line to the target point.  Putter and green reads were solid with some great par saves and a really tricky birdie.
    • Day 13 - 2026-01-02 One hour short game work. Chipping balls to different targets, compass putting drill with 2-3% slope.
