54 Ping tour wedge is currently my anything under 130 yards in club. I had tried to use a 58 TM Rac Satin tp wedge but I have no confidence and it will be on Ebay in a week's time. Looking towards E-bay now for a 58 wedge replacement, perhaps an older CG11 for slightly more forgiveness and D6 weight.

As I'm sure some have stated prior to me, it really depends on the elevation and wind. If there's no breeze and no elevation to the green. I would be in between clubs. I don't carry a 4-iron so I would either hope to hit a 5 iron solid or choke down and hit a smooth 3 hybrid (22 deg. which is more like a 4 iron loft). I don't really have a 200 yard club. I chose hybrid for the poll as more often then not I would choke down on the 22 deg. hybrid.

Opinions on this new putter line? I am interested in the Craz-E in particular. Thanks.

Hi Bjarni, We have quite a bit in common... as you can see in my signature I use only 12 clubs and I share 8 of them with you. I don't carry a fairway wood. The only shot I can't produce with my 12 club set is reaching the green in two on a long par 5... but at my current ability I feel any shot more than 220 yards is a high risk shot and I have no problem laying up with an iron and "hoping" to be on the green in 3. Nothing wrong with playing less than a full 14 club bag, especially if you're fairly new to the game. I used only 11 clubs until a few weeks ago and lowered my handicap index by 13 in the past year. It really depends on what you feel comfortable swinging. Many people would probably add a 5 and 3 fairway wood, but you could also look at a 3 hybrid, 2 hybrid, 7 wood or 4 wood. Good luck.

The bounce you have on the Callys would best be suited for soft sand and turf conditions or if you have a steep swing. Nice wedges. Hope they work out for you.

My iron set also came with a 50 deg. gap wedge. I decided on a 54/58 wedge setup. Up to you but I would just look for a sand wedge initially, 54 or 56. This club will help with greenside bunkers and I don't think a lob wedge will do you any good at your current handicap. I lowered my handicap index by 12 in the past year with 11 clubs in my bag. Now I'm up to 12 clubs overall after buying the 54/58 wedges and removing a 56. Good luck.

Thanks for the thorough reply Beung, My main concern was getting too much height or ballooning on my drives with the lower compression balls. I would certainly like a ball that would spin more and hold more greens. With a 19 index and dropping steadily I think I am ready for some decent mid-priced balls. My game nor my budget is ready for the upper tier 3-piece balls.

My driver swing speed is now approx. 100-105 mph. Looking at the Golfsmith sale I see good prices on the Dunlop Super Loco, Precept Laddie Extreme and Maxfli Redmax. Are these low compression balls an ideal choice for my swing speed? Yes, no, maybe?

I would suggest buying a 460 cc driver for more forgiveness. Since your misses tend to go right perhaps you can try some offset drivers or ones with a closed face. My Callaway X460 has a 2 deg. closed face and this has helped me greatly. With your current handicap as you play more often and most likely take lessons you will go through several swing changes as your playing improves. But what the heck, definitely go to Edwin Watts and ask a salesman for assistance. Try out some drivers and who knows... the salesman might even give you a swing tip. At a demo day earlier this year an Adams golf rep noticed that I was standing too close to the ball. He spent a few minutes with me placing me in what he thought was an ideal setup position and what a difference it made.

If I follow you correctly the only wedge you carry is a pitching wedge. No clue what the loft is on your pitching wedge but I would suggest looking at a sand wedge first with a minimum 8 - 12 degrees difference than your pitching wedge. For sure your greenside bunker play will improve. You then have enough of a loft variance in case you want to add a gap wedge in between the pitching and sand wedge lofts. A lob wedge could be your 4th wedge. Up to you... Ultimately, technique is your key because with your distance there is no club made that would allow you to take a full swing from 50 yards in. Our handicaps are similar and I can tell you that any shot less than a full swing for me is difficult to dial in yardage, especially a 50 yard shot.

I have the bb 04 irons that came with the 50 deg. gw. I am comfortable using this club with a full swing but do not chip with it. I chip with my 54 and 58 deg. wedges. Gl with your selection.

I like to tee up a new ball on hole #1... after that I rarely take a ball out of play.

Play more often, choose the higher % shot (better course mgt.) and improve my lag putting.
