Golf Balls
The Golfing Polack replied to The Golfing Polack's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Agreed on the AD333. This was the first "good" ball I ever played, and will still buy a sleeve or two if I'm low before a round. I love the ZUR-s, but wonder if there's anything better out there that I need to try. -
I've noticed in the Golf Digest "What's in the bag" series that a lot of pro players alter the loft of woods and drivers. Is this an easy process or rather expensive? I know forged irons and wedges is a pretty easy change, but if done to a wood will a new shaft be needed?

Instead of starting a thread where everyone just yells out what kind of ball they use, I was wondering if there were any suggestions about what the best ball for the money is. My HC is around 13, and my driver swing speed is between 108 and 112. I want a ball that's gonna give decent distance off the tee, but more importantly stick on greens. I have a fairly steep swing, and launch the ball extremely high, so something that will help with the ballooning is also an big plus. The main thing is I don't want to spend more than $30 a dozen. I was looking at the HX Tour 56, but even on eBay they're $35 once you factor in shipping. Anything else out there that gets the same results for less money? Thanks

Focus would be a good thing.

I bought a Yes! putter about a year ago without even trying it out. Ordered it from Golfsmith and could not be happier. Obviously the condition of the greens is going to have a great deal to do with how well the ball rolls, but I have noticed while playing with other folks that my ball doesn't skip and hop as much. Obviously I got lucky buying a putter without trying it out, but I like the look and can now say that it's limited by 3 putts to 1-2 per round.

So I just wanted some positive reenforcement to stave off the inevitable buyer's remorse. Today I traded a Srixon W-506 driver, 403 3 wood, and 403 3i-SW for Ben Hogan Edge CFT hybrid/iron set and a used cleveland CG10 gunmetal sand wedge. My old irons were regular flex, and I really needed a stiff flex. The Hogans were only $150 new and included 3 and 4 hybrids and 5-pw. Hopefully the stiff shafts will help me out, and the wedge is definately a big step up from what I was playing. I also got a Mizuno MP-T 53* for under $60, so all in all it was a pretty good day. I just ordered a Callway FT-3 draw driver off ebay for under $130, so the only club I lack for my near complete overhaul is a 3 or 4 wood. Any suggestions? I need to fill the gap between a 9.5* driver and a 18* hybrid.

Need opinion on my wedge setup
The Golfing Polack replied to clickagent75's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
What you need to do is find out the lofts of all 3 wedges, then not to have a loft gap of more than 4-5*. There should be no reason to carry 2 SW. Replace one with a gap wedge around 50-52*. -
I'll be in Windsor all next week and was wondering if anybody knows good public golf in the area. Thanks

Nickent is notorious for setting their lofts extremely strong, as to make their irons much longer than other manufacturers. This creates problems when buying wedges to complete the set. I played their old GH plus irons, which were a calloway style. I liked them, but had problems with the heads coming of the shafts. I sold them for more than I payed for them new though, so not a bad investment and I got a few years out of them. I almost went with their new pro line irons, but didn't want to drop the cash at the time. I haven't hit anything in the last year though, so take this all with a grain of salt.

Brand loyalty hurting my game?
The Golfing Polack replied to The Golfing Polack's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I really do like the driver and hybrid, and haven't found anything else that I like better yet, but I'm not exactly sure what to go to with the irons. I definitely need to go back to Cleveland wedges though. Before I got the Srixons I tried Titleist DCI 962's. They really let me know that I needed a lot more consistency before I was ready for a real player's iron (even though they were slightly cavity backed). I don't want to make the same mistake twice, but I also don't want to spend $800 and regret selling my $200 Srixons. -
This sort of things pops up a lot. I'm a fantasy sports player, and early on I would try and get all my favorite players from my favorite teams, without really thinking about how that would affect the end results. I'm kind of in the same boat in golf right now, as you can see by my sig, I'm playing all Srixon (except putter) right now. I'm trying to get my handicap down below a 10, but wonder if trying to stay with one brand and obviously limiting my choices is good for my game? The budget is tight right now, so I was thinking of selling my 403's on eBay and getting the 506's (in stiff, which would certainly help me out), but should I look at other manufacturers and stop limiting myself to a relatively unknown company only because I think it's cool to be different? This mentality has already burned me once, when I sold a fantastic cleveland 900 RTG gap wedge to get my Srixon wedges. I've been crying every time I line up a 110 yarder since. Just wondering if there are any other thoughts on the subject.

Grip size vs. performance
The Golfing Polack replied to hipcheck4u's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have large hands (I wear a XXL glove) and went from a standard to a midsize DD2. I didn't notice a lot of difference in my shots, but my hands felt a lot better after each round. I would always get fatigue from having to hold onto the other grips tighter. I almost went with jumbo's but they wouldn't fit in my golf bag well enough. HA. -
Best way to get out of bunkers is to not get in them, but we all end up there eventually. If the sand is in good shape it's actually fun to play out of bunkers, but a lot of the time up here they're like concrete and I just try and pick them clean so as to not destroy my clubs. The biggest thing that helped me with bunkers was to try and splash the sand to where you want the ball to land. The sand will just carry the ball with it.

Shouldnt be working in golf retail..
The Golfing Polack replied to Clubswinger21's topic in Golf Talk
Dick's is usually like that. If you're looking for something other than what's on the rack they just curl up in the fetal position and jab their thumb in their mouth. Another reason why I buy my stuff online. -
When is it time to switch to a different set of teeboxes?
The Golfing Polack replied to Mr.Buckethead's topic in Golf Talk
I played from the blues for a while, but on the course I normally played it only added around 10 yards a hole, which increased my sand wedge to a gap wedge, which I hit better anyway. Lately I've been playing more with my dad, who plays the whites, so I do to. It really hasn't brought my handicap down at all. I usually tee off with my hybrid, even from the blues, which will leave me a 6 iron at most into most par 4's. -
Courses in North Atlanta/Georgia
The Golfing Polack replied to rmgr's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I went to college in Chattanooga, TN, and we played a lot of golf in north Georgia. The two courses that I like the best were Field's Ferry and Windstone Golf club. Also, if you want to travel into Tennessee there's a Nichlaus course at Harrison Bay state park. There's actually quite a bit of decent golf in the Chattanooga/North Georgia area. Battlefield Golf course, near Chicamauga battlefield is an ok course, but is usually very dry. We only played there because our caddy cards got us 18 with a cart for 10 bucks. -
I play most of my golf by myself, unless I get set up with someone that I don't know. Sometimes I'm fine with that, it's let me meet some interesting people. But, I always play better when I'm by myself. The best round of my life came while playing by myself before a big thunderstorm hit in the late afternoon. I play 18 in less than 2 hours and shot a 73. Everything just fell into place. That said, I also enjoy playing with groups of friends or family, as it give you a chance to do some friendly insulting and needling. My wife is getting into golf as well, so soon I'll have a playing partner any time, at least for the first nine holes.

I played for the first time in over a month last night. Only got out early enough to play the front, but oh well. I hit the driver like crap the first 3 holes, but pulled up to the 4th, a 390 yrd par 4, and really drilled it. The hole goes over a small hill, so I didn't see where the ball ended up. When I got over the hill I was only about 70 yards out. I still chipped like crap and 3 putted for bogey, but the drive was my best in a quite a while. Granted the course was dry as hell and even worm burners were going 250.

Trying to figure your driving distance on a course or at the range is impossible. At the range who knows who set the distances, or how far back the tee area is that particular day. On the course yardages are measured very strangely, especially on holes that dogleg either direction. If you want to know how far you carry go somewhere that has a launch monitor. I always figured that I hit the ball really far, but until started actually seeing what my average (being key) driver goes around 250-260, with an occasional freak swing of 290-300 I am a lot more humble about my distances. Usually the people I play with are playing the whites anyway, so I only use driver on the par 5's, as I like to keep an 8 or 9 iron into the green. Go hit your driver and your ball on a launch monitor about 50 times and you will know your average driver carry distance.

Expensive vs. Cheaper Golf Shoes
The Golfing Polack replied to RyanR's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was playing a cheap pair of $30 shoes that I bought while I as in college, only because they were the only pair I could afford. Dexters I think. They tore my feet up, especially the back of my heel/achilles area. This led me to playing barefoot for a whole summer. I actually dropped my handicap by around 7-8 shots that summer, but started having my back hurt after each round and practice session. I'd walk with sandals on, then kick them off for everything but chipping and putting. I decided to break down and buy a nice pair of Adidas clima-cools this summer. They are not designed to be water proof, but I don't play in the early mornings, so it isn't a big deal for me. They do keep my feet from sweating which means no athlete's foot flare ups -
To reiterate what a lot have already said, the actual distance you hit a club is pretty much just a matter of pride/ego. I'm a guy who hits it long (200-205) with my 5 iron, but if you're consistent with your distances who cares. If I hit a 165 yard par 3 with my 8 and you used a 5, but are closer to the pin, I'd tip my hat to you, not smirk that I used 3 clubs less. The distance drop in your wedges is a little startling, and it seems like you're probably executing a flop shot with too much wrist action. Stiffen that wrist and move the ball back in your stance. You can also try hitting with a more closed stance which will deloft the club enough to gain you some distance, but most importantly keep your wrists stiff and hit down through the ball. You want a relatively large divot with the sand wedge.

Adjusting to a New Swing
The Golfing Polack replied to sbrl9014's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I try and make the same swing with every club in the bag. Obviously a flop shot or punch would require a special swing, but for my standard high fade I just take the same swing with gap wedge through driver. Usually the results are completely different, but trying to make your muscles change every other shot would be difficult for anybody. -
What club gives you the most trouble?
The Golfing Polack replied to Soup Fan's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
For me it's definitely my driver right now. I'll go through stages where I'm killing it long and straight, but probably 75% of the time it's a big tall fade/killer slice. My last round I just left it in the bag after the first 3 holes and teed off with my 18* hybrid. Being 230-240 in the fairway is so much easier to play. I hit a lot of GIR's and shot a pretty decent round of 82 with 31 putts. I think the next time I play I won't even bring the driver along and see what happens. Maybe I can get my HC under 10 by the end of the summer. -
I'm a big guy (5'11" 270+) and in PA we never have a dry heat. My wife likes to say that I sweat brushing my teeth, which isn't far from the truth. I'll play when it's in the low 90's, but over that I'm not going to put myself through it. Once you start with heat rashes and sun strokes there's no fun left at all. I save my golf in the summer for evening play and right after thunderstorms when it gets down in the 80's. I did play in my early teens when it was 95-100 with around 95% humidity. I walked 36 holes and by the end of the second round I was almost dead. My legs cramped every 30 mins or so for 2-3 days. Not fun at all. There comes a point where being miserable outweighs the enjoyment of playing golf. When that happens I put Tiger Woods 07 on the 360 and play there. I score a lot lower anyway.
