I answered 5 but in real life I play everyday and get in 330-350 rounds per year. I've done this for 5 years now since I retired and haven't got bored yet. (I'm 62). I don't have any other hobbies to take me away. 1-2 times a week I'll play 36 holes while walking the first and riding the second round. I walk till it gets over 85 temp which works out about 60/40 walk/ ride. I don't think walking is a workout at all but it is good, easy exercise. Typical 18 holes is about 14,000 steps. As far as the mental aspect, I don't feel any different about the rounds. I feel good anticipation before each round in fact, I feel like if I don't play for some reason ( rain, lightning) that I'm getting cheated of my daily routine and end up on the couch watching TV. Scores are about the same, difference is putting.

Yes, being retired has its advantages. I play daily. 350-365 per year. I make up for the rain days by doing 36 once or twice a week. Doesn't hurt that I met my wife on a golf course. She still works so on the weekends its couples golf! Life is good!

The problem with this scenario is it doesn't take into consideration the many golfers who don't partake in competitions but only play with there buddies or on the weekends. I personally like the folks who do it right and just record all scores played, that way it is what is and the golfer will know when he is improving.

I disagree that it isn't a big deal. F or me I'm 6'5" and have my clubs 2 upright. If I didn't the toe is going to dig in the ground. It is a big deal but make sure you have a club fitter who has the right equipment to bend them. Most will tell you if they're not forged that they will not be responsible for breakage which can happen.

Has anyone ever 'figured it out?" ie garbage to glory?
Jim Ludden replied to Williamevanl's topic in Golf Talk
I agree, it's better to turn a round to the better than start off on fire and leak oil to the end. Last week I shoot 37 on the front and couldn't miss and finish the last five holes in 6 over to finish at 80. Very depressing -

I feel the same way. If i start off with a double bogey I'm thinking "ok, i can make this up with a couple birds on the front side." I probably shouldn't think this way but as a 7.8 HC it makes it hard to right a round and be in the 70's with a couple doubles. High HC's aren't wired that way, they're goal is to make 3-4 pars and they've played well that day. -
I took Dave in Fl advice almost 5 years ago and moved from KC to Houston. After the move I retired! I have post over three hundred rounds each year since I moved here with last year being the best at 341. Even got written up in the Texas golf assoc magazine for the most posted rounds in the state of Texas. This may sound like a lot for your guys but remember, I retired, I do not have any other hobbies, my wife plays with me on the weekends ( she still works:) ), plus I really enjoy it and feel cheated if I don't get out every day. 2-3 days a week I'll get in my 36 when my wife shows up after work and we get in another round before dark.

My bad, didn't understand. He must have some pull or pics of someone! To get on tv for golf!
-
It's okay because he's a football commentator? And not golf? Then what the hell is he doing golf then!

BERMAN is the worst. Why they let that in front of a camera is beyond me

I used to wear a glove 100% of the time but now that I'm in Houston I only wear rain gloves when it's absolutely too humid. I sweat profusely down here and will Tommy Two glove it with my rain gloves but there was a big problem...... My hands were lily white!!!! So no gloves for me now as I use liquid rosin on my hands and and go gloveless. Works great and is way cheaper than buying a $20 glove every 4-6 rounds. I play every day of the week and it was a huge deal for me. I even have to play hatless every 3-4 round so I don't have a Stewart Cink head. The things one will do to play this game.........

Private courses are for.........
Jim Ludden replied to Lost-Ball's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I've been a member of a club in Houston for four years since we moved here. My choice for joking a private club is to SAVE $. I couldn't afford to play a public course. Let me explain, I play daily and at least 36 twice a week ( over 300 rounds per year). Add in my wife who plays on the weekend and at least twice per week after work ( yes she still works). Add in cart fees daily and it would add up to way more than what I pay in dues per month around $820 including cart plan. So for me it's cheaper, 31/2 hour rounds, great practice facility, free range balls, not having to make tee times except Sat and Sun mornings and it all adds up to the perfect setup for us. The only thing missing is that I can't have my own private cart. -
2014 U.S. Opens (Plural!) at Pinehurst #2 Discussion Thread
Jim Ludden replied to mvmac's topic in Tour Talk
I can tell you the course is hard! Just played it today as they're getting it ready for the Open. Miss the fairways and get into the ice plant and stuff you're dead, even for the pros. They had the Sunday pins today and wow! You realize how good these guys are putting on these greens. Put it near the edge and watch it roll off 20 yds. I was pleased to break 90 here and to see where the pros tee off from its absolutely amazing what they can do. -
New restraunt, wow, that wasn't there before. I would've thought they would have built a permanent pro shop before that. To me it shows the course is doable, money wise, if they build it out within a few years. Otherwise I tend to to think " is this club going to make it". Similar to the Golf Club of Kansas 5-7 years ago when they opened they were selling cheap private memberships to the first 500 who joined and huge drawing of the facilities on the website, Etc. I come back last year and played it, course is great but no facilities built and it's open to the public Yes, I agree with you the greens were good and had some undulation to then and the bunkers were fine, and totally agree with you on having Zosia fairways. In addition Zosia Is also better to play if your a Winter golfer. Zosia is what we had at our old club at The National GC in Parkville

"Stone Canyon....it opened in 2009 so you might have missed it. .....and yes, I hate winters too!! " Ah yes, I've played it twice now when I come to KC to play with my old golf buddies. Last year in September the fairways were very wet and bad. Not sure what happened. This year before when I was up it was perfect. I also like Winterstone golf on that side of town on the public side. Sycamore Ridge is my favorite on the Kansas side along with the golf club of Kansas.

I play daily and 36 twice week (30) rounds a month or so. I'd say 90% are at my club while the others at different tracks that we play inter club matches. I'll go play wherever one wants to play but I have not ever got bored playing my home course at all. Great/hard track. My home course is where they filmed Tin Cup movie. Anyone guess the name?
-
What is your "home course" in KC area? I used to live there till about 5 years ago and moved to Houston. don't miss the Winters!

I think golf is more fun when I don't keep score.
Jim Ludden replied to clearwaterms's topic in Golf Talk
I agree with David in FL, range time on the course. I couldn't play golf without keeping score even if I tried. Mentally I'd know the I'm "2 over after 5 and need to par out on the side to keep this round going". Funny, I like the " why don't you just putt the gimmes if your not really keeping score?" -
My Lexus 460GX is my big Texas golf taxi. It can hold all the gear but you get there in style and comfort

Caledonia is my all time favorite course in MB! Played TPC just a couple of months ago and it was nice, haven't played the other two you listed but I'm concerned your "only" playing four courses?? Hopefully your playing each of them twice?

I know many people here won't get that but that is why I don't have a handicap. [/QUOTE] Ok, I get it you don't need a HC cause you don't bet or gamble. Hard for me to believe a guy doesn't want to know if he's getting better or worse with his game. Without a benchmark you have no idea if your game is progressing or in remiss. Without a HC you are just guessing You might as well subscribe to something like " no child left behind". Let's not tell Johnny he's not cutting the grade, let's just say he's trying and pass him. It's okay, he wanted to do well so let's pass him. I say your kidding yourself in golf as in life, if you don't know where your going you'll never know if you get there. Ever get a annual review at work? They don't give you a " well you tried so you get a raise". They tell you you improved or you didn't and you get a raise or you don't

Really I not but not having to go to work is really great. My day is simple, get up and see my wife off to work then read the paper, do any honeys do's that need to be done. Go to the course at 10:30 and finish by 3:30. Head home to get diner started and have wine out for my honey when she gets home. Go to bed and get up and repeat daily! Doesn't get any better!

Congrats on playing some fine courses in St George. I just got back from there and Mesquite last month and played the same courses along with Wolfcreek and the Palmer courses in Mesquite. Personally I don't thing you played too much. I think you were focused on paying well when away and then lost focus when you returned Easy to do. I play daily year round( yes, over 340 rounds per year) and I don't get tired. That's my thing, job, hobby, etc so I really enjoy getting on the course daily. You'll get back into the groove at home in short order

After reading some of the responses I'm kinda embarrassed to post my number here. To date this year I've played 235 rounds. As my son tells me " Dad, if you okay so much, why aren't you any better than a 7?" I tell him it's quantity not quality golf I play. I retired when I moved to Huston 4 years ago and play 7-10 per week. Haven't got tired of it yet. My mindset is " if I have a bad round round, no problem as ill be back here tomorrow in less than 24 hours"
