Last (Golf) Thing You Bought?
JeffG replied to JYB's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Ohhh, last time I went was a joyous day. Just left the Byron Nelson, went to the PGA superstore b/c I needed a hat. Couldn't find a hat, so I went to Golfsmith. They were having a tent sale. HUUUGE discounts. They already had stuff on clearance outside (about 30-40% off), but that day you took an ADDITIONAL 25% off, but if you bought 3 items...you take 50% off! So, I got a new Titleist hat (not on sale, $21 or so), 2 Addidas Climacool shirts, and 1 Greg Norman (same kinda Climacool) shirt, and a little club head cleaner all for a total of $80! Each one of those shirts are like $60 normally! -
Just picked up a TM R7 460 in excellent condition (probably 9/10) with a Graphite Design I-65 S Flex shaft thats been PUREd and aligned by SST, for $139 plus shipping. And of course, it rained like a mother yesterday and every golf range is closed.....i'm seriously considering just teeing it up in some random front yard hitting one and running. Its pretty tough looking a new driving and can't even hit it!

Considering Taylor Made driver, help me out here
JeffG replied to domino's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I've got the 460 and its the straightest driver i've ever hit. However, I got too much loft and lost a little distance so i've recently got the 460 with a degree less loft and an upgraded shaft. UPS man, hurry!!! I think you'd be pleased with the 460, very forgiving. -
I am independently employed (own/run insurance agency) so I bought my own individual health plan (Blue Cross). Only runs me $100 a month for decent deductible ($1,500) and copays. Wife is employed and gets health coverage through employer.

Is this the wrong shaft for me? Help!
JeffG replied to JeffG's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Well, 275 is on a rare draw with pretty firm fairways. I'm usually sitting around 255 or so, and when i'm ballooning i'm about 240 maybe. I'm really just now getting more accurate figures since I just got a golfguru GPS last week. -

Is this the wrong shaft for me? Help!
JeffG replied to JeffG's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Well, the auction was about to end...and it was at a price I couldn't resist ($139.00 plus 12 shipping). So I went ahead and got it. In excellent condition w/ a very expensive shaft for only $150 shipped. So, i'll hold off selling my existing one until I play with this one for a few rounds. If I don't like it then i'll just put it up for auction or sell it on here. -
I currently have a TM R7 460, 10.5*, RE*AX 60g mid tip stiff flex shaft (all standard, I guess..came straight from manufacturer). Right now, i'm not terribly happy with the ballfight. I hit this thing WAY to high. I guess you could say I am ballooning alot of shots, so I'm not getting ANY roll...if the ground is even semi-damp, I plug alot of drives. When i'm teeing off into the wind, I lose all confidence because I send it way up there and the wind just grabs it and accentuates whatever shot I hit (fade into a slice, etc). However, I am hitting it very straight...hitting most of my fairways, just dont' like the ballfight. So, i'm thinking about getting a 9.5*, same club, and I have the opportunity to get one but it comes with a Graphite Design Tour AD I-65 70g S shaft. I've read as much as I can on these and it says they are designed for "accomplished players with high swing speeds" "Minimal torque" "Lower flight paths" etc. Well, I did hit on a monitor a year or so ago...and I remember my swing speeds were ~100. Can't remember much about my spin rate or launch angle. My handicap is probably floating around 8-10. My driver distances (with my current driver) range from 245-275 depending on if I balloon it or not. So, without going to a launch monitor and getting professionally fitted (I know thats what I need to be but nearest one is a long way away), is that shaft going to be a bad match for me or is it just too hard to tell?? Also, is the 10g difference going to be very noticable? Better or worse? Should I pull the trigger on this driver (I can get it for pretty cheap) or pay a little more and get a new R7 w/ the Aldila NV 65 S? Sorry for so many questions...just starting to learn more about the equipment aspect of golf!

Well, there are very different types of airspeed, indicated, calibrated, true...etc... Bascially, airspeed is the speed of which you are moving through the fluid that is air. Groundspeed is, well...ground speed...the speed at which you are moving relative to the ground. Think of a boat. If the boat is set on 10mph, it's moving through the water at 10mph...so it's "waterspeed" (aka airspeed) is 10mph. If he's on a lake with no wind, his groundspeed and his "waterspeed" are identical. Now, stick the boat in a river going WITH the current, and say the current is moving at 10mph relative to the shore. Well, his waterspeed is still 10mph, but the current is 10 mph, so he's groundspeed is 20mph. Have him going upstream, and they cancel each other out, he's still going 10 mph through the water but people are laughing at him on teh shore b/c he isn't going anywhere. Same principle with airspeed. In fact, when I used to instruct back at the university, i'd take a student up and demonstrate it on a very windy day. Go up to about 5 or 6 thousand feet, find the direction of the wind and stick the nose into it. Drop the flaps, slow it down, and we could get a groundspeed of about 5kts if we wanted to (off the GPS). If wind was high enough we could even get a negative ground speed or even move backwards while still maintaining flight. So, even though we were moving through the air at 45-50 kts, that little tree down there wasn't moving at all relative to us.

What make of glove do you wear...
JeffG replied to PutterHead's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have 2 SMT gloves so I always have a fresh one and one going back to SMT to get a new one. So, I only wear a glove for probably about a month before I get a fresh one. Less time if I'm playing alot and during the warmer months. -

SMT Lifetime Warranty glove. 100% leather, feels great...lifetime warranty, send it in whenever it gets dirty or torn or too sweaty, whatever, and they send you a brand new fresh one. Only pay like $7 for shipping. I've got a few extra i'm selling if anybody is interested. -
Yep, you got me there. Even though I was too young to care when the Cowboys won their championships...they still did it in somewhat recent memory. And yeah, the other guy...being a Lion's fan sucks...but at least you have the pistons. At least you Cav's got to the finals last year...of course, the fate too great like Mav's in 06.

DLPs just have never really done it for me. All the colors are a little too cartoonish...I got a Sony SXRD Lcos rear projection. The colors seem more lifelike and cinema-like... Still, my friend has a samsung LED DLP and it looks pretty good.

Just a small brag, i'm really proud of our course. For a long time, we had people that cared...but didn't care enough to really go out and get stuff done. Well, we have a new board president and alot of things are getting done now! We're just a small 9-hole club, our tee signs are on plywood hanging by PVC pipe (if that paints a great picture I don't knwo what does!). 3 20-year old ball washers w/ towels that have no "cloth" left. Worn down flags, and used-to-be-black flag poles with the paint worn off. A beautiful, but old club house. And a REALLY old raggedy looking cart shed. Well now, we've painted the cartshed, renovating the 150 year old locker room that nobody uses to a 19th hole hangout. Fresh coat of paint on the clubhouse. Built a new trophy case in the bar. Just ordered new set of flags and flag poles...got 3 fancy new ball washers (holy crap those are expensive...$750 for 3 ball washers? No mounting?!), and just ordered 9 new granite tee signs, all sponsored (my company sponsored the #1 tee!). We have a full calendar of tournaments, and finally got USGA rated. Even have scheduled the local district golf tournament here. Just refreshing to have life back into a club that seemed to be drifting away.

Well, i'm a pretty hardcore Mav's fan..and they are just driving me insane. I was against the Kidd trade...Kidd isn't producing...freakin 0-8 against teams w/ winning records, now Dirk goes down with a leg and ankle injury. Seriously, Dallas fans in all aspects have been taking a beating lately. Haven't won an NFL playoff game in like 13 years...Mav's choke away the finals up 2 games and 13 points w/ 6 min to go in Game 3....67-15 record last year to lose to the eighth seeded Golden State...now....sheesh...

I broke my wrist as a kid learning how to skate, and we never got it fixed right. So, I get a very sharp pain and it becomes very immoble and stiff every now and then. So, when it's acting up and I plan on playing I take some Tylenol Artwritis. Seems to work...

I would say around 180-190? 190 if I hit it square...
-
I think i'm going to get a taylormade rescue hybrid, but I'm not sure what loft. The distance that is empty right now is about 190-210. I have a 3-wood that I hit fine, and my next club is a 4 iron. So, do you recommend the 19, 22, or 25? Also, check out this auction...looks legit...thats where I"m thinking about buying it. Seems like a great price. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=130206246510

Haha wow, I haven't been on this forum since last season and I come back to find a topic on one of my loves of life, flight! I've been on several forums with this question asked, there have been hundreds pages on this very particular topic. There have been engineers, master's of physics, etc. all proclaim "of course not, it won't take off" verbally bashing all the lesser intellectuals around them, only to a few pages later go "oops...I get it now...it will fly." So, if you are still in the "no it will not fly" crowd, make your points and questions as nice and non-arrogant as possible b/c a little while later it will "click" and you'll come drudging back to say, "Whoops, yeah I get it now." To whoever, brought up about the car on ice to refute, you actually brought up a great example to oppose your own view of it. A car on a lake of ice, spins its wheels...goes nowhere right. Because the wheels are forced forward by the engine and just spin..no forward motion. Strap a propellor or a jet rocket (same principle...force by air) onto the hood of that car...and magically it moves forward. Why, b/c the force is applied to the AIR and not the ground. Another example, say you are flying along and do a low pass over a runway. You extend your gear and touch down but don't let off the throttle. Do you all of the sudden slow to a stop b/c the "runway" is stationary? Nope, your wheels keep on spinning freely. Now start that runway on a big conveyer belt going backwards...slam to a stop? No, going the same airspeed, your wheels are just spinning backwards very quickly. K, that example might not work for the non-pilots. The post below me has a good example, the force is exerted from another place besides the contact between the wheels and the ground its on. its okay, we won't laugh if you say you are wrong...well..maybe a little.

Odyssey Black Series 1 vs Scotty Cameron
JeffG replied to VanillaEps's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Well, I am very biased...hah, but I have the black series #2 (I liked the squared off look better), and I've never been more confident with a putter in my life. I don't care where I am on the green, I feel like I can easily 2 putt (doesn't always happen, but at least I have the confidence). I can't comment on a Scotty, as I've never putted with one. -
Best round...i've really stepped up my game this year. I've already beat my best round at least 3 times. At first it was a 6 over, 78...then a 5 over 77...yesterday it was a 3 over 73. Of course, I had to be by myself. But I was warming up for a tournament this weekend, so I get free golf at this place this whole week. It was very rewarding!
-
Agreed. My 9-hole course has its share of golfers that dress very nice and several that dress very casual (jeans..untucked T-shirt) and a few that dress almost comically. Just yesterday (in a scramble/tournament no-less), I saw a guy in cut-off blue jean shorts, with a sleevless shirt, a backwards hat, and "golf flip flops" that had little tee-holders on them!
-
Now, i'm not that experienced with several different types of putters...but i'll echoe what he said as far as the feel. My black series #2 is the sweetest putter i've ever used. I've never putted like I have with this thing.

My favs have to be Shiner and Bass when i'm having a meal...Miller Lite when I don't feel like a heavy beer...and Dos Equis.

Yesterday, had two very nice shots. #5 is a decent sized par 4. Green is heavily sloped back to front. Of course I did what I always try NOT to do...and flew the green. I was about 10-15 feet behind the green. The pin was only about 10 feet onto the green, on a downslope. So I didn't have hardly any green to work with and I knew it was gonna land on a down slope. Well I took out my 60 and played a beautiful flop shot that hit the center of the pin and dropped. A nice birdie on a tough hole. #17. Dogleg right par 4. Tee off is over a lake into a fairway that is facing to the right. You have to really hit it high and far to cut the corner. I always try to just play a cut shot and fade it back into the fairway. Well, I would up pulling it through the fairway, over the cart path and into a wooded area full of baby pines with adult pines lining the cart path. 150 yards out with 2 adult pines directly inbetween me and the pin. Just to the right of the right pine is a crape mertle. I decide to punch a 4 iron over the crape mertle (while keeping it underneath the branches of the pine) and hook it around back to the green. Needless to say I pulled it off nicely...rolled up to about 7-8 feet away and sunk the birdie!
