Help - check out my swing
wengerlaw replied to Carnoustie_Stokie's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
For me, drills like the feet together drill are about muscle memory. If you can get your body and mind to "remember" the motions used in the drill, you can then work on incorporating the motion into my full swing. I am still in the process of working the motion from this drill into my swing. -
Help - check out my swing

I've been having a real problem with releasing the club just before impact. I tend to turn my hips and body during my downswing without getting my arms involved in time to hit the ball with a square face. I generally end up hitting the ball with an open face resulting in a hard push. I have taken a couple of lessons with a pro and he recommended the feet together drill to help me get my arms more involved and to develop the feeling of releasing the club. So far this drill has been the best thing ever for my swing. It forces you to keep your hips and upper body quieter than normal with more focus on the arms. The drill also prevents you from swinging to hard (another problem I have) because you will lose your balance if you do this. I'd recommend hitting about 15-20 balls with your feet together each time you go the range. Its also a great way to "groove" your swing just before teeing off. When I do this drill, I use a 7 iron and tee the ball up just a little higher than I would for a tee shot. Just about every time the ball goes straight as an arrow. I would hit the ball like this in play except you lose a good amount of distance (no weight shift, very little torque) and I think it would be pretty hard to hit like this out of the fairway. If I'm ever facing a par three green with water to the left (I'm left handed), I'll consider placing my feet closer together and maybe using one more club than normal for the tee shot. -

I think those brands are excluded at the request of the brands. I don't think the store decides to exclude these brands. In any event, I had previously recommended a Sun Mountain cart bag and Sun Mountain is NOT on the list of excluded brands.

Golfsmith is giving 20% off on everything except clubs and balls. The promotion runs through 7/1/07. You can pick up one of the nicer cart bags and still fit within your budget. If you buy online the promotion code is: EPS726SAL

I think the Sun Mountain C-130 is the ultimate cart bag. It's freaking huge and has pockets for everything imaginable. Also has 14 way full length club dividers. May be a bit out of your price range, Golfsmith retails this bag for $170. Golfsmith is always running specials and storewide discounts, so check their website.

I agree totally. I am just a beginner (only been playing seriously for 4 months) and I check my ego at the door when it comes time to tee off. I'll play with friends who are hitting from the blue tees and I have no problem walking up to the whites and hitting from there. I can hit the ball a good distance (about 260 with a pure driver shot), but my swing is so inconsistent right now, that I will often bag the driver and tee off with a five wood or even a 21d hybrid. Playing from the whites allows me to play within myself. I just don't see how people can enjoy playing golf hitting from tees that are beyond their skill level.

My screen looks the same as jeffr92. Maybe we have the screen view set up wrong?

I picked up the Cleveland Launcher Ti 460 for $150.00 at Golfsmith. Its a great driver, just last year's model. I think they still have them available at this price online. I'm totally happy with it. I can't see spending $400 on a club that I maybe hit 6 times per round.

I bought a Zolex last month from a guy in Times Square. Only cost me $50.00 bucks.

I see what you're saying, but for higher handicappers like myself who can't necessarily put it in the "sweet spot and knock it stiff" with any great reliability, having a goal in your mind of at least getting on the green in regulation (no matter where) and then taking your chances with the putter is a good thing. For me, if I were able to hit every green in regulation and then three-putted all of the holes, I'm still looking at shooting a 90 for the round. This would be a good score for me. This obviously doesn't sound like a real fun way to play, but I think the thought is sound from a course management standpoint.
-
Nice article, thanks for pointing it out. This is a great example of how most of us who want to shoot lower scores should be playing more conservatively and thinking more about course management.

I have been to this page and there is nothing there about reputation points. It has a listing of recent threads I have subscribed to and a table of various options and settings on the left side. I have been through all of these options and don't see anything about reputation.

Sorry, I haven't used a forum much before and I just can't figure out where to find my reputation status. I clicked on User CP in the top left corner and have looked all around for my reputation status. I can't find it anywhere. Where exactly should I be looking?

I have a Cleveland CG11 gap wedge (52d) which I don't like because it feels very clunky and heavy. I have a Titleist Spin-Milled sand wedge (56d) which I love. It feels a lot more balanced than the CG11. Even with the 14d of bounce, I feel more confident hitting the Titleist off the fairway than the CG11. I would definitely recommend checking out the Vokeys and comparing them to the Clevelands. Personally, when I have a few extra bucks in my pocket, I intend to replace the CG11 with another Titleist.

Okay, now I just saw that the Golf Channel is reporting he was present for the birth. Good for him!!!
-
Okay, I'll admit that if Tiger hung around Oakmont for any period of time after the tournament was over, then he almost certainly did not know that the birth was imminent. Here is an article from the Orlando Sentinel which backs up your contention that he didn't know about the birth during the final round. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sport...home-headlines This brings up an interesting issue: I haven't seen anything that says Tiger was present for the birth. If he was still in PA Sunday evening and Elin gave birth "early Monday morning" its very possible he wasn't able to make it back to Orlando in time for the birth.

Come on iacas, how can you say for sure that Tiger didn't know his wife was about to deliver? Did you speak with him about this topic or see a report from someone who did? Birth doesn't always happen quickly. Elin could have been feeling contractions up to 36 hours before the actual delivery. There could have been a problem with the pregnancy that required the doctors to induce or schedule a C-Section. Both of these procedures are scheduled days or weeks in advance except in the case of an emergency. My wife and I had a baby 6 months ago through an induced pregnancy. I knew the exact date the baby was going to be born a week in advance. I was at work the day before the delivery, but I can tell you the birth was on my mind the whole day and was somewhat of a distraction. I'm not saying that Tiger did or did not know that the baby was coming. If he did know, I obviously can't say whether it affected his performance on Sunday. It would have definitely affected my performance, but a competitor like Tiger has a brain that is wired a bit differently than the rest of us. All I said was that his demeanor on Sunday was different from what I have seen in past Majors.
-
I meant that no one in the forum knows for sure. How can you be so confident this didn't affect his play? From your past postings, I know you rely heavily on facts and statistics. Your statement hear seems to assume you know the inner workings of Tiger's brain.
-
Obviously, none of us know for sure whether Tiger knew his wife may be going in to labor soon or whether it had any bearing on his play Sunday. I will just say that Tiger looked much calmer and stoic on Sunday than I have ever seen him in a Major. This could have been focus - or distraction.
-
I believe Tiger's 3 wood also has that ugly (but not so big) yellow sole on it as well.

Check out this interesting article from ESPN.com: http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/usope...bob&id;=2907515 Bottom line is that no one finds the fairways with great regularity at the U.S. Open, so its better to be 330 yards from the tee and in the rough than 280 from the tee and in the rough. Cabrera for example only hit 4 fairways on Sunday and 5 on Saturday. But he was bombing the ball an average of 310 yards. You can certainly debate whether the "bomb and gouge" style of play is good for the game, but the fact is that the professionals have determined that "long and wrong" gives them the best chance of success.

A few years ago, Golf Digest did an "investigative report" on Tiger's workout routine. He apparently doesn't talk about his exercise regime, but the reporter gathered intel from people at gyms Tiger frequents, etc.... See: http://www.golfdigest.com/features/i...erworkout.html

Just for the record, I agree that Miller knows his stuff, its just the way he presents things in an overly-critical and negative manner that makes me mad. He acts as if he never made a mistake on the golf course. I'd equate Miller's commentary to Joe Theismann for the NFL. Theismann was no doubt a great player and knows the game, but the constant negativity and nitpicking wears on me.

I agree that the Ping Hoofer is a great stand bag. I was checking these out, but opted for the Sun Mountain Superlight based largely on price. I'm not sure how much the "Extreme" costs, but the Hoofer Vantage I was looking at was $170. This is a little pricey for a small stand bag. Plus, Ping doesn't allow stores to offer discounts on their merchandise. I picked up the Sun Mountain online at Golfsmith. It retails for $140, but I had a 15% off coupon, so it cost me only $119.
