One drill i used to use was to lay a ball down in the trap and draw a square around the ball. (about 5in.X 5in.) Then take a swing and knock the box out. Two things to remember; always accelerate through the shot and always follow through.

What club do I drop when using 4 wedges?
jmurdock replied to hansmixer's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I dropped my 5 wood two weeks ago. I rarely hit it anyway and if I really need to hit 220-235 off the tee, I just choke down a little on my 3 wood. -
Do you all hook the daylights out of yoru Hybrid?
jmurdock replied to despereaux's topic in Golf Talk
I used to have the same problem. Most hybrids are offset and people like us tend to over-draw the ball. I recently got the Adams Pro Series hybrids, which have no offset and they are 10 times better than other hybrids I have hit. The Taylor Made TP versions also have no offset and the Titleist might. Give those a try and see if they work for you. -
394 downwind on a course in Texas. The fairways were pretty hard. When my ball landed, it bounced about 20ft in the air. I probably got about 50 to 60 yards of roll at least

Your favorite -- or least favorite -- golf clichés
jmurdock replied to Q.Q.Quillume's topic in Golf Talk
I hate when your putting and the ball is 4 feet from going in and your partner says, "Nice birdie". The ball always seems to take a turn at the last moment and miss. Just wait till it goes in and then say, "Nice birdie". Favorite- After a birdie hole, the player hits a horrible tee shot on the next hole or bogies the hole and they say, "Nice P.B.F.U." (Post Biridie F@#k Up) -
280 is plenty of drive for a lot of courses. My Uncle played college golf and was the shortest driver on the team, but was the best golfer. Why? He was 10 times better than anyone else from 100 yards in. Back on topic.... something that might help you with pressure on the course is when you are out playing, play "worst ball". It works like a scramble. You play 2 balls on every shot and you play from the worst of the 2 shots. This will help you to become more consistant and deal with pressure.... Imagine you just made a downhill breaker from 6 feet to save a great par. Well, you better concentrate and make it again or your carding a bogey.

What is the length of your putter?
jmurdock replied to Cleveland Gunmetal's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I am 5'10" and I use a 35" putter. I likle to stand tall over my putts. I feel I can see the line better. -
I am the opposite as far as the launch monitor goes. I would say I honestly carry the ball about 265-270. The launch monitor says I carry it closer to 295.
-
I will say I carry the ball about 270 or so. Now when you add roll, there is an extra 10 to 25 yards. One person posted that people who can drive it out there with the pros should work on their short game and go pro. Last year, I had the pleasure of playing with Loren Roberts who now plays mostly on the Champions tour. He was never a long hitter by any means, but he could play. I outdrove him on just about every hole with some drives being 20 yards past him. He did nothing fancy, but by the end of the round I noticed that he had shot a cool 68 (-4). Tour pros are at an entirely different level of golf, in all faccets, over the average or even good golfer. Its not just short game. Its iron play, course management, the ability to create shots..... Those are my thoughts

Its great that you won the 3rd flight of your club championship. Congrats. All I'm saying is that you can't say your the "Club Champion" of the over 12 handicappers. That makes no sense

My course runs 11-12 depending on if they cut and rolled them

5 or 10 ft by the hole!!. That is hitting it a little too firm. Hitting a putt that dies in the hole has to be way more precise than one that is hit with more pace on it. I tend to be firm with my 3-5 footers with a miss leaving me another 2-3 feet at most. Straight downhill is a different story.

Nope. No you didnt. Not with that handicap

Driver Recomendation + shaft stiffness
jmurdock replied to Dragasevich's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
How often can a 20 handicap hit a 5 iron off the deck 200 yds.??? Now while I swing at 105 mph with my driver, I only hit my 5 iron 185-190. But I hit it consistenly. Back on topic.... If you are swinging at 106 mph, then I would go with a stiff shaft in your driver. The regular shaft will be too whippy for you. -
Do Golf Shoes make much difference?
jmurdock replied to mcecki's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
While I do believe that golf shoes will help your game, (especially in wet weather) I dont think for one second that it will drop your score by 5 strokes. As long as you are swinging under control and not slipping when swinging, then I say your tennis shoes are fine. -
I was a caddy for a college teammate of mine and he was trying to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. The first tee is right by the putting green and needless to say he was nervous. He hits it a long way and the first hole was realtively short, so I suggested that he just take a nice easy 3 wood off the tee and that would leave him about 140-150 out. Well, he tops his tee shot about 20 yards in front of everyone. Now he's flustered. "Ok, just bust this 3 iron down there and try to get up and down with a wedge." SHANK.... into number 2 fairway. I thought this was going to be a long day. We get to number 2 fairway and he has about 225 to the green over some trees. I know what club he needs to hit, but I dont want to tell him. "Uh, I think it's another 3 iron." Wouldn't you know it, he hit the prettiest 3 iron over the trees and onto the green about 8 feet. He made the putt for the best opening hole par I have ever seen. Too bad everyone watching those first 2 shots couldn't see his latter 2. Sorry for the length

I won my club chmpionship 2 years ago and all skill levels are on the same playing ground. We have a qualifying round, which seeds you from 2-32. Last year's champion gets the #1 seed. From there on out, we play match play. I cant see anybody sitting in the men's grill bragging about "Yea, I'm the 15 handicap and higher club champion" Also, if you won the 2nd flight, you are not the club champion. Only people in the Championship flight can claim that.

I would go with the Taylor Made Burner. The regular Burner has a 1* closed face and the TP version has a 1* open face and is $100 more. It is a great club though.
-
I have one and it is amazing. I was happy with my SC Newport, but when I putted with the Circa 62 I was sold. The charcoal mist finish looks great and I am making more putts than I did with my other Scotty. That may be a confidence thing, but who cares. Great putter!

Hit the range and also work on your short game. That will lower your scores faster than anything else. You putt every hole and by your handicap, Im sure you are chipping almost every hole as well. Work on those 2 things and you will see a dramatic improvement. Also, you cant have a 40 handicap. The highest handicap is 36.

Can big grips cause shanking along with slicing?
jmurdock replied to Chilidipper's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I know that for me personally, bigger grips do not allow me to get the clubface square at impact. I had my driver regripped one time and went to the range and couldnt hit anything but a fade to a slice. I asked the cart boys about my grip and they had put an extra layer of tape on when they regripped my club. New grip, one layer of tape= straighter drives for me -
I love the Adams Pro series hybrids. They also do not have a draw face, which was a big sell with me. Also, they come with the Aldila Proto shaft.
-
Wow, tough question. I would have to go with Titleist only because of my Scotty Cameron putter. I cant live without it. Also, I have played Titleist woods and irons before and are not opposed to those. Taylor Made was a close second because of the driver and their partnership with Adidas. I wear ClimaCool shirts and Tour 360 shoes. Love em'
-
I would go with the Adidas Tour 360 or the Powerband. Adidas makes the most comfortable golf shoe in my opinion. I had only worn FJ, but decided to try out some Adidas because I liked the look of them. I glad I did.
