will it ever stop raining?!? - northeast us rant
roobatooba replied to Gioguy21's topic in Golf Talk
i hear ya gioguy . i got a foursome tomorrow morning and i gotta make sure to dig out my rain pants and yankees pullover jacket just in case.We havent enjoyed enough good weather for summer to start fading away so soon . -
I know . First elimination that bummed me out . Petey left with a lot of good shots in the confidence bank that he can bring up during a tough round.

LPGA tour player you'd most like to play a round with .
roobatooba replied to roobatooba's topic in Tour Talk
Nicely done Texas Solo , believe me , everytime she crouches down for a putt, i'm not just thinking about reading the greens . Looks aside she's talented and i'm sure she'd school me . I'd let her too. -
I'm sitting here watching Suzanne Peterssen play Christie Kerr and i wondered how it would be like to play with an lpga tour pro.I'm guessing with my high handicap it'd be a lesson because these ladies can flat out play . My vote is for the pink panther , I'm a huge Paula Creamer fan even though her name conjures up the lewdest innuendo . Who would you guys play a round with ?

I Always End Up In the Water
roobatooba replied to noobgolfer's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
As someone with firsthand knowledge of the ''hydro-magnetism'' of teed-up golf balls, i can tell you that splashing a few into the drink will do you good. First off , you'll get over that bad shot and focus a little better for the approach and subsequent shots . I know once i got over the initial embarassment , i took that shot for what it was worth : a bad shot not worth repeating but nothing more than that. Failure motivates success , in fact there's a Michael Jordan quote somewhere on how many shots he'd missed in his career and how he wouldnt quit . Good luck . There's a hole at a course i play regularly ,and when i pull up to it in the cart , i always make a point of saying to my playing partner '' you know i used to toss my balls into the water here all time but i know it wont happen today ! Good luck! -
a change of socks ( my balls are hydro-magnetic) , couple 2, 3 , beers ( snuck in the bag of course) , sunflower seeds and a stogie or two .

Tried putting without a glove for the first time in a long time , and i putted better than i had been . The feel makes a difference and i could'nt care less if people think i'm just trying to act like the pros.

1970's ? Dont think so , Iranian Shah's living room ? Probably ! Sweet clubs though .

Sound strategy , will employ it on Tuesday when i go out.

I was just punishing myself by looking at some old scorecards and i realized that i seem to play better on wet fairways . I'm not saying i prefer the rain but i seem to hit better on moist ground. Now i dont mean marshy swamps , rather , off the morning dew or an hour or so after light rainfall.Mentally , i think my mind feels more comfortable swinging underneath when the ground should '' give ''more. This is just a weird observation that i made about myself and i wonder if anyone has anything idiosyncratic about their game or just some odd or weird preference ?

I use this grip for my putting .Actually i copied it from a golf instructor off youtube and it definitely takes the hands out of play. When i take my time , i nail most putts within 6 feet and two putt from 20 ft or so . That said i've never broken 100 but putting is not the reason why.

Thank you for all the advice . I have a few days to prepare for my next golf outing and i will definitely prepare for the par 3's by trusting my yardages and not thinking so much . I find many reasons why i will fail at the par 3's but not enough reasons why i will nail them so instead of having unrealistic expectations , i'll be real with myself and build on good shots.

Most but probably not all. I can name a few courses in central new york whose par 3 tee boxes are not quite even .I find some of them to actually have a bowl-like feeling to them and when my feet are on the outer edges of the '' bowl '' with my club in the middle , i tend to get the feeling of hitting onto a lower level. The problem is probably not the tee box but how my mind perceives this simple challenge and further complicates it so that i get intimidated . I've been trying more positive self talk and it seems to have a calming effect .Until i mess up the shot !

Kieran how do you like the ignite putter ? i have the same one with an orange milled face and i've had good touch with it for the most part . The best part about it for me is the length 35 inches i hate having to stoop down when i putt.

You got that right ? On a positive note , i've been working on correcting my slice and today i managed to do so with some success. My short game around the greens could use a lot of work but the old 4 iron chip got me out of trouble quite a few times .By the way whats the rule on balls that plug into the ground yet are in play ( not O.B.) ?

Thanks phillyk.Another thing i just remembered , whenever i tee the ball on a lower surface than where my feet are planted i feel very uncomfortable and almost always top it , no matter what adjustments i make ( stepping up etc.) My ultimate goal this summer is to break 100 and hopefully that will open the floodgates and 90 will follow shortly thereafter . I will do everything you mentioned the next time i tee it up at a par 3 and hope for the best .

I've been trying to break 100 for quite sometime now (second season , New York golf season is very limited) and i shot 57 on the front and an even 50 on the back , which is an all time low .(sad but true) Today the frustration came at the par 3's where i posted a 7, 6 5 & 6 . In my mind , a par 3 is a chance to scribble down 4 or lower and i squandered those chances . I reached the first one in three after skulling the tee shot and topping the next two .Sucker pin placement and the undulation commenced to befuddle me , and 7 strokes later , i was left scratching my head . I stepped onto the tee box confident that the club i had would get me on the green or close , but i seemed to have a hard time on the short holes .Cumulatively , i shot 24 on the 4 par 3 's and that is pretty brutal , even for me.Out on the fairway i can hit my distances but for some reason a par 3 scares the feces out of me and i hit dribblers , push, pull skull and everything else i can to add strokes to my score.I need some help maybe a way to mentally 'man up' and prepare myself or just a refocussing . Any ideas?

i know what thats like . A former co worker and i went out and having no driving or woods he played mine . He was doing fine until he put an idiot mark on my driver which came off with wet buffing but it was no fun . People want the privilege of hitting a new club without having to care about the potential damage.

I am 31 yrs old and in the third year of seriously attempting to play this game . My father was a natural golfer according to my mom and uncle and i have many childhood pictures taken next to his club championship trophies . My first set was from a garage sale and they were ladies clubs from , i presume , the groovy seventies . This feedback people speak of , i got plenty from that set . Mostly , ' Hey Bozo , that was a lousy shot' , or ' C'mon , you CANT be serious ! ' . I , however , am blessed with an idiot's resolve to make a fool of myself until i am immune to it all. The first few trips to the driving range prompted a few kind - hearted duffers to dispense some help . ( although i suspect they did that to protect their frontals as every ball i hit was a heat - seeking missile heading for the nut-sackage of anybody near me ! ) My neighbour gave me some throw away senior set that i was very glad to receive and promptly set about breaking three of the clubs in my attempt at divots. I graduated to playing 9 within 58-64 shots and got the bug . The birth of my second son halted any thoughts of improving my game . Two years later , my wife's grandfather gave an old iron set he had no need for and took me out a few times . I experienced my first birdie with him and it was ORGASMIC ! It was a par 4 , wide open except for a treeline to the left separating my hole from the next . I hit a wayward hook to the right behind the trees but somehow could still see the pin which was on an elevated green . I was about 150 yards out and took my 7 iron iron , and inexplicably placed it two feet from the pin . The cart ride to the green felt like Tiger walking to the 18th hole at the masters just knowing he'd won it already . Thankfully i sank the putt and i was hooked for life. This year i bought GI irons and i am currently attempting to break 100 legitimately . No mulligans , counting every stroke.I came close a few weeks ago during our rainy New York spring at a local course .Posted two nines for the first two holes and went Kevin Na on the other seven , with 1 birdie 3 pars 2 bogies and a double . I went home with a semi , confident i would be breaking 100 in no time and MAYBE even 90 . Right ? Wrong ! Shot 58 , 56 , 62 and 54 . Oh by the way , i'm recovering from a crushed femur on my right leg so all is not lost yet .
