Are you really good enough to play your equipment
docmao replied to AbsoluteZero's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
This thread feel familiar... maybe to one asking how good one has to be to play blades. I've had my Hogan Apex irons almost 5 years now, and my handicap has streadily improved with them in the bag. I graduated into the Hogans: Titleist DCI (full cavity) to Mizuno TZoid Pro (1/2 cavity) to these, and I have never once felt like I missed a shot that would've worked with a more forgiving club in my hands. I miss plenty, but I'm sure I would've missed even with a super game improvement set. I like the feedback. I'll echo the sentiment from the prior thread: with blades, you know when you are swinging well, and when you need to tighten things up. I like to know when I am even a little off. So am I "good" enough for them? Who cares. I like em. And thats half the battle. And if you don't think I'm good enough, I'm happy to play you for $10 naussau. -
3 Golf Swing Tips That Are Destroying Golfer's Swings!
docmao replied to lynchjo's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I disagree. What would your advise be in contrast? Grip tightly? Swing with a lot of tension? In my swing, those things are speed killers. I swing my best when I am loose and relaxed. I can't tell you how many people I've watched swing with the death grip and violent lurch, giving them zero chance of success. -
This is either a Tale of Woe. Or else it is a Tale of Whoa. depending on your perspective. Yesterday was the 2nd day of our club championship. My buddy Brian had shot 76 the day before for a net 65, so I knew I had my work cut out for me if I was going to catch him. Hit the 1st green and justed missed a 12 footer for birdie. Pitched to a foot to get up and down on 2. Hit the green and missed an 8 footer for birdie on 3. Then chipped in for birdie on 4, and suddenly i'm 1 under. I knew it was going to be a special day. Missed a 10 footer for birdie on 5 and then get up and down for par on 6 and 7. Drain an 8 footer for birdie on 8 and miss a 10 footer for birdie on 9, so I go out in 2 under par. Easily could've been 5 under if I could've putt even moderately well. Birdie 12 to go 3 under but then promptly 3-jack the next green to drop back to -2. My first bogey of the day, and I go into crisis management mode. 2 more solid up and down pars and I get to 16 tee -2. "holy s***" I tell myself. I could really get into the house under par here. "Don't blow it!" 16, an uphill 530 yard dogleg left with OB the entire left side and lateral hazard right, I hit a perfect tee shot leaving myself about 260 to the green. I think smooth 5 wood to play it safe, and promptly smother hook it. I get to my ball and instead of going OB, its sitting there on a cart path. Free drops from heaven. Sweeeet. Of course I ruin the grace bestowed upon me and hit a tree branch with my approach and manage to bogey what should've been an easy par. No problem I tell myself. You're still 1 under. Just par one of the next 2 and you beat old man par. 17 a slight dogleg left, 430 yards, and with the pin back, I hit the front of the green. My mind starts going bananas. I try to calm myself down, to give the dont worry about it pep talk. But I don't hear it through the thunder claps of the impending storm. A 50 foot birdie putt, and I hit it about 35 five feet. CRAP!!! Fifteen footer slides by, and I am no longer under par. 18, 410, dogleg left to a green with a lot of movement. Just hit the fairway, i tell myself (I go in the right rough). 195 out, Just hit the green, i tell myself (I go in the greenside bunker). Just give yourself a reasonable chance at par here (blast out to 9 feet). Ok, just hit a good putt, and whether it goes or not, you at least gave it chance... I read left edge and the putt breaks... LEFT, never had a chance. Tap in bogey. 73. My personal best. I should be happy. If someone had told me I would shoot 73 before i teed off, I would've taken it and ran. But now that its over, I can't help but think, what if? What if I kept me composure a little longer. What if I didn't 3 putt twice. Ahhh, I hate golf, I love golf, I hate golf. Anyways, thats my tale. I won the field low net. Shot my best score ever. And I feel empty and miserable. Funny game, huh?

I'd bust 3 wood over the first 3 traps aiming at the trees. If I fade it, its in the fairway, if its straight, its a wedge out of the rough, no biggy. But that takes the water completely out of play.

Putting and Chipping Practice Routine
docmao replied to cporter777's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I am a firm believer in practicing pressure situations, to simulate what you will see on the course. Try to make 50 consecutive 3 footers, going around the hole like a clock, and if you miss, start over (no cheating!). Trust me, those last 5 can be real testers, especially if you've picked a hole with a little break. Or try to get up and down 10 consecutive times, different lies of different distances. If you miss, start over. Then you're working on both chipping and putting. -
Nike one platinum vs black
docmao replied to walfice's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
this from Golf Digest, clearly says One Platinum: http://www.golfdigest.com/golfworld/...ersbag20080128 If Jay chooses to believe in a grand conspiracy, nobody can prove otherwise. You can't prove a negative. -
Nike one platinum vs black
docmao replied to walfice's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I've played the last 4 generations of the One platinum and last years Blacks. Absolutely love the feel of the platinum around the green; the black is much "clickier". I play the platinum almost exclusively for that reason. For the long game, I've tried all the upper level balls (ProV1, B330, HX, TP, One) and found them comparable in distance and control. None of them will negate my bad swings, and respond well to my good ones. It's hard for me to believe that anyone is good enough to say that they put 2 EXACT swings on 2 different balls and one took off while the other "went nowhere". Thats just junk science. -
When I first started playing, I watched Davis Love and Brad Faxon lining up the Tour Balata writing along the putt line, so this is not a new phenomenon. I love putting lines on my new balls. Feels like i'm seasoning my glove for little league, or creasing my hats... a very functional personalization.

What are your thoughts on "Last years models"?
docmao replied to elivate's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I bought a R5 TP this week. Last year, this puppy was going for $600. I got it gently used on eBay for $100, and I am just giddy over it. FYI, I did buy a HiBore last year, before the XL came out and hit it well for about 3 weeks, then grew to hate it. It consistently balooned on me. I traded it in for a different shaft with a higher kick point to no avail. my $.02 -
Maybe it was her candor in ripping Michelle Wie for playing with the men, but for whatever reason, I find myself really rooting against Morgan Pressel. This weekend, she held the 36 hole lead and I enjoyed watching her melt down. She still has yet to win, cries all the time, and those Callaway commercials that try to put her in the same class of golfer as Annika, Phil, and Arnie... blachhh. Is it just me? Does this bother anybody else out there?

personally, i wouldn't play wolf. The better player always ends up paying the other three. Not sure why, but it always works out that way when i play. I'm partial to Vegas. You can fairly play, while giving strokes, and so long as you shoot well, should the dough. It goes like this: All 4 players tee off. The 2 farthest left (using a line from the center of the fairway to the tee) become partners against the 2 on the right for that hole only. After holing out, you and your partners scores make up a 2-digit number, the low score being first. If you shoot a 4 and your partner shoots a 6/net 5, then your team score is 45. If the other teams score is 46, then you and your partner win 1 point. If they shoot 55, then you guys get 10 points. Then you repartner on the next hole. I've heard people play this for a dollar a point but my friends just play for dimes. Trust me, it adds up fast. And it makes you finish the hole in respectable fashion. Have fun.

My favorite shot is really any one that requires a lot of imagination. Like 185 yards out, in the right rough, with a tree a half-foot in front of you forcing you to hit that big punch cut shot (a la Sergio at the PGA) to hit the green. Pulling off a shot like that, one that has the potential to seriously hurt you if you fail, is an awesome thrill. On a side note, my least favorite shot is the one that puts me in that position.

I thought I read in Golf Digest once that it would take almost half a roll of lead tape to get 10 grams of weight. Thats the only reason I thought of the nickels. Maybe I could tape the nickels down with lead tape ;)

Hi folks. I'm a newbie here and Ive enjoyed reading the posts. I'm an 8.1 index, playing an old(?) TM r510 with Blue stiff shaft. I hit every club in my bag straight except the driver, which is erratic but, for the most part, fades. I've been interested in a draw bias driver but don't want to fork over $$$. My question for the group is: Can I tape a couple nickels where the screws on the r7 go? They're 5 grams apiece (I looked it up!). I figure I can effectively create the draw bias externally by adding the 10 grams and shifting the CG lower and left. Does anybody see a flaw in this? Thanks in advance for the help.

Oh, you'll already be pretty close to Dragon. Definitely play there before your leave for Tahoe. If you have another golf day, play Whitehawk Ranch as well.
