Does anyone know the hosel depth of the Adams Tight Lies 2.0 fairway woods? Asking because I'm looking at a shaft with a three-inch parallel tip section that I would likely need tipped. But, since half an inch must be left above the hosel and the recommended tipping for a 5-wood is one inch, it would be impossible to tip if the depth is an inch and a half. Thanks in advance.

KBS Shafts for Wedges
Long Ball Larry replied to Long Ball Larry's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thanks all for the responses so far. WUTiger , my iron set (3-PW) already has the KBS Tour shafts. I'm trying to figure out what to do about my two Vokeys (54 and 60). I use the 54 around the green and for full shots. I use the 60 much less often, usually 60 yards and in, and never for full shots. Definitely plan on keeping both. -
I am unfamiliar with KBS and just ordered a set of irons with the Tour shafts. For my two wedges, would I be better off getting the (1) 37.5-inch Iron shafts (i.e., the same the irons) or (2) 37-inch Wedge shafts (my irons are standard length)? According to the KBS website, the Wedge shafts are "developed for players seeking a similar feel to the KBS TOUR." I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference, but just wanted to see if someone more knowledgeable had any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Played 30 rounds and finished with a 5.6. I want to increase my GIR% from 42% (7-8 per round) to at least 50%. The number that sticks out the most: 40% of fairways. Even worse: 30% of the misses went left, and 30% went right. Someone needs to work on his driver.

I would like to see Phil win the Grand Slam, but I'll settle for: Masters - Tiger U.S. Open - Phil Open Championship - Kaymer PGA Championship - Phil

Ko'olau Golf Club (American Golf does it again!!!)
Long Ball Larry replied to Yukari's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Completely agree. I played there for the first time on Christmas Day last year (fortunately only had to pay about $50). Zero plans to go back. -
Since trajectory is a big concern and everything you have is standard, I would get fitted for the correct shaft(s) first and foremost. I'm guessing you can play well with whatever club heads you're comfortable with given you're a 9 index. Also, four wedges in your set makes sense since you're a long hitter. I recently switched from the TaylorMade Tour Preferreds (2008 version) to the 714 AP2s and am happy with them. Got a great deal from my fitter and didn't need, or ultimately want, to shell out for Mizunos. I've stayed away from TaylorMade since purchasing my first set since they release new stuff every six months.

Curious ... how long did it take you to first break 80 ??
Long Ball Larry replied to inthehole's topic in Golf Talk
It took me almost four years and 90-100 rounds. I had a handful of 80s and finally broke through with a 77 at Ewa Beach Golf Club in Oahu last December. I've been shooting 78-84 this year and just established a new low of 76 at Bandon Dunes last month. The weird thing is that I didn't card a single birdie either round. -
You obviously know more about this than I do. I was speaking based on my tendency to blade pitches from tight lies with my 54.11 and having more success with my 60.07.

I find "GET IN THE HOLE!" and "YOU DA MAN!" to be very annoying. I got a laugh when some guy shouted "BABA BOOEY!" yesterday, but nothing will beat the "MASHED POTATOES!" guy from Chevron last year.

I would go low-bounce given your normal playing conditions. 45* to 52* is not crazy by any means. I believe Tiger's PW is 47* and his wedges are 56* and 60*. If you go that route, I'd follow newtogolf's recommendation when you're in between clubs. If I may make a suggestion, what about going 50/56/60, and bending the 56* to 55* (and removing a degree of bounce). Then you'd have five-degree gaps from 40* to 60*.
-
Well done! I like the scorecard/stats. What program do you use?
-
I would upgrade the 3-wood for sure. What is the loft on your 4-iron? If it's a strongly-lofted GI iron (21* or so), you could go with a 15* 3-wood and a 18* wood or hybrid, and that would leave you with room for one more club, maybe a GW there's a large gap between your PW and SW.

set make-up ideas for 2012....
Long Ball Larry replied to onthehunt526's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Except for the 5-wood, your set configuration and yardages are pretty much identical to mine before I went from four wedges to three (I had a 3-wood). I originally made an uninformed decision and bought the matching AW and SW, so starting with the 9-iron, my lofts were 43/47/51/55/60. Since I never used the AW and didn't like the clunky look and feel of it and the SW, I got rid of them and decided to put the 3-iron in the bag. What I ended up doing was getting Vokeys (54 and 60) and bending the PW one degree weak, so my lofts are now 43/48/54/60. When I find myself with 122 yards or so, I just choke up a little on the PW. Problem solved. The 3-iron really comes in handy on short par 4s and even tight par 5s that aren't reachable. You could do something like this with your set. Regarding the other questions, I would replace your 5-wood with a 3-wood and get matching wedges. Best of luck, and please let us know what you end up doing. -

Long Ball Larry replied to onthehunt526's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Bending the PW a degree strong seems like the path of least resistance to me. You could also bend the 9-iron half a degree strong as well, and then you'd have four-degree gaps from the 5-iron down. What caught my eye was you're carrying both a 5-wood and 3-hybrid. I agree with Lucius: get a 3-wood, and ditch one of the aforementioned clubs. Based solely on lofts, I'd take out the 5-wood since your 4-iron is 25*, so you'd have 9/15/20/25 at the top. -
For me, it's not. My initial configuration had an AW, and the lofts on my short clubs were 43-47-51-55-50. The odd 51-55 combo were the AW and SW that matched my irons. After a while, I realized that I never used the AW and that I wanted actual wedges with less bounce, so I ditched the AW, put the 3-iron in the bag, and picked up my current 54 and 60. I also had my PW bent to 48 so the gaps were more consistent. I don't miss the AW at all. If I find myself with 120 or so, I just choke down a little on my PW. The 3-iron comes in handy off the tee sometimes, and I use it a lot at the range during practice.

I love my 910D2 and considered getting a matching 3-wood, but didn't end up doing it. I preferred the 910F over the 910Fd because it has a lower-profile face and was easier to hit off the deck. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to picking one up.

Buying Clubs without Testing
Long Ball Larry replied to buj77's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Sorry, I'm not familiar with SCOR, but I get where you're coming from. I went through two each of component drivers and fairway metals and didn't like three of them (the second fairway is currently in my bag). I obviously couldn't return them to my club guy, but luckily, I was able to recoup most of my money by selling them on eBay. It was a hassle and wouldn't have been much better even with a friendly return policy. I would only go that route again as a last resort. -
Buying Clubs without Testing
Long Ball Larry replied to buj77's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I bought my current wedges online without trying them out first. Even though there's a Roger Dunn two seconds from where I live, I was flying blind because I'm a lefty and there wasn't much available to demo. I liked the look of the Cleveland CG15/16s and Vokeys and ended up going with the Vokeys. I couldn't be happier with them. Unless you live in a remote area, isn't there a place somewhat nearby where you could go and demo some wedges? -
Anyone used the white ice odyssey putters?
Long Ball Larry replied to broombroom's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I've had four different #9 putters, two with inserts (White Hot XG and White Ice) and two without (Black Series Tour and currently the ProType Tour). My speed is so much better with a milled face. I also had a tendency to sporadically blow one past the hole with the White Hot/Ice. -
Looking for a new Iron set for 18 handicapper
Long Ball Larry replied to Fishbones's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm not sure I follow. The irons you mention are, to my knowledge, GI irons. Personally, I think of SGI irons as being geared toward newbies who have trouble making contact with the ball. If the OP is an 18 handicap who used to play, I'm guessing that's not the case. Just my opinion. -
Odyssey Putter Fitting Help
Long Ball Larry replied to Lynn Jones's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I also putt on an arc, and I've been using the Odyssey #9 putters since I started playing. The heel shaft keeps me from blocking putts left. I'm on my fourth one and realized that I prefer a milled face (current one, Black Tour) to an insert (White Hot XG, White Ice). Did a #9 pop up when you took the survey? -
For me, it just depends on the hole. If a solid 3-wood leaves me with more than a 6-iron into the green, I'd just hit driver.
