I'd say it's a toss-up between my MP-52 47* PW or my Rife putter. I'm able to handle ranges from 80-115, multiple trajectories, cut or draw and even chip with the PW. It's eliminated my need for a GW so the only only wedge I carry is a 56 CG12 DSG. I've cut my putts/hole from over 2 to around 1.8 since I bagged the putter. It's saved me 3+ strokes a round by itself.

Am I making this game more difficult for myself???
jammer59 replied to timastyle's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I moved into MP-52s recently and kept a combo set of 6-Pw MP-52 and 4/5i MX-23. It's working out very well for me. I get the added forgiveness where I need it most and I love the control and precision of the shorter irons. The MP-52s are a bit more weakly lofted than the MX-23s so they will tend to play shorter for the same number so that might account for coming up shorter. I find that I can take a longer club, grip down an inch and swing normally and I get about the same range that way. -
Question about Wilson Staff Ci7
jammer59 replied to adamdaassassin's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
If you can shoot in the 90s and strike the ball reasonably well most of the time, then the Ci7s will be fine. While not an SGI club, they are solidly GI sticks and the have plenty of forgiveness for toe hits. -
Most "forgiving" of mp series irons
jammer59 replied to kennay92's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I currently play MP-52s. I chose them over MP-58s because I thought they were marginally more forgiving on toe hits but you'll be punished if you aren't in the general vicinity of the sweetspot with any of the less "blade-like" MPs (50, 57, 52, 58). Of these, I used to play 57s before swapping out for 52s. I found them similar but the sole was slightly more forgiving on the 52s if you're inclined to dig or hit fat. My vote would be for the MP-52 #1, MP-57 #2, MP-58 #3 and MP-60 #4. I will add that fitting and shafts make even more of a distance with less SGI-like clubs and lie angle is especially critical. -
I've just cut my clubs down to 10 ( see below ) and I'm playing my best golf of the season recently. Part of it is eliminating options so that I don't try and force shots that I'm not going to hit well, such as 200+ yard approach shots. I decided that if I can't hit a club pretty well 50% or more of the time, then why is it in the bag during game day! Driver 4H (23*) 6i - PW 54 & 60 wedges Putter

I was fortunate to drop below 90 within my first 5 rounds. Unfortunately, I've not been able to consistently stay in that range. I normally shoot from 86 to 94 playing once per week and practicing a couple of hours per week. I've been playing just over a year in the fair weather months.

A nice set of clubs -- I moved up from the X-18s to Mizzy -57s in May. I hit them straighter and they've required me to be more controlled in tempo to hit well -- I'm now down to an off 14 handicap, from 22, since making the switch in just about 8 weeks.

What do you think of this ball?
jammer59 replied to JimmyDoesGolf's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
You might consider the Nike PD Soft ($15.99/dozen) in the U.S. You won't lose more than a few yards distance (at most) and they have nice spin and playability closer in. -
Give me ball suggestions - PLease
jammer59 replied to SulfurAcid's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
You can find the Nike PD Soft (green box) for about $15/dozen -- nice distance, soft cover and medium spin. I drop and stop them on greens routinely from 150 yards and in. If you want to play Pro V1x, pick up a dozen recycled at Target for about $26. I've played this alot as well as the NEW ones and I note no difference. -
I feel exactly the same way. If those things happen, I'm playing pretty well and the score will generally take care of itself.

TaylorMade Burner woods and rescues
jammer59 replied to eberryhill7's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I use the TM Burner 3W and have found it to be easier to hit than alternative OEM fairways that I've tried. A nice, easy swing puts this straight out on the fairway 225-245 for me (about the same as my driver.) I tried the Burner rescue but I found it difficult to keep the ball flight on a mid trajectory -- it is easy to balloon. Fairways are great, the Resue couldn't dislodge my Nickent 3DX. -
I second this post, I currently play 3 wedges of different brands: MP-T 51/6 gap wedge -- like the control and the "lesser" spin on these full wedge shots from 100 to 115. Cleveland CT14 56/10 -- excellent but not outrageous spin and it's a very workable sand wedge. Cleveland DSG RTG 588 -- for me the sole grind makes this an incredibly flexible shotmaker and it spins plenty by not as much as SM or CG14.

I'd stick with the Burner if you're getting solid results. I have mine in a stiff shaft cut down to 44.5" and I get very solid results -- usually around 250+ and pretty straight. I tried several others but didn't find that I got the same distance and consistency. This included the G10, Callaway Hyper X, Big Bertha and Nike 5000. The Burner is a solid driver for us less experienced golfers and you don't sacrifice distance or basic workability -- I can produce a fade when required but usually I just bomb it out there straight. The TM Burner 3 wood is also a very usable club.

Well, if you just want to evaluate hybrids as an option, you can't beat the original Nickent (Genex) 3DX hybrid. I just started playing last year and went through a round of trying newer more expensive options: TM Burner Rescue, Cally X, Mizuno Clk before dumping them all for 1 17* and 23* original 3DX that were selling new at Golfsmith for $59. I used them yesterday to nail 3 par 5s in 2 (something that I've never done in a single round.) They are easy to hit with a smooth swing and don't balloon -- nice mid, boring trajectory. Good place to start your search without spending big bucks.

I haven't noticed my SS when I was doing various lessons and fitting but my driver ball speed was consistently in the 145 to 150 range and my carry was typically 230-235 with too much backspin (3800rpm)
-
At present, my MP-57 8i. So far, it's been money from 140-150. I can fly in high and soft or knockdown easily and even get a 5-7 yard fade to help hold onto firm greens. I was 3 greens out of 3 tries with this club my last outing resulting in 2 pars and a birdie. For someone who struggles to play close to 90 that is a good result in one round. It's made me more conservative off the tee on those 370-400 yard par 4s because I can hit the green as readily with this club as I can a 90 yard sand wedge. More conservative off the tee means fewer OBs and wide slice shots and that should be good for a couple of strokes as well. Now, I wish I could say the same thing about the 5i!
-
I can only speak to the TM Burner 10.5* -- this has been a great driver for me (after I had the shaft shortened a tad over an inch.) I find the sweet spot most of the time and if I manage to square the clubface, it's 235-240 carry for me at 90 SS. I have a lower ball flight so I usually manage an additional 25+ yards of roll.

What wedge/loft combo are you using?
jammer59 replied to JYB's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have the following wedge setup: MP-57 PW: 115 to 125 yards MP-T 51/06: 100 to 115 yards CG14 56/11: 75 to 100 yards 588 DSG RTG 60/3: 40 to 75 yards Short pitches/chips as the lie and situation require. -
I hit the TM Burner 15* -- I find it as easy from the fairway as off the tee. It's pretty forgiving and definitely long enough for me. With the stock (shift) shaft, I have to make sure that I have a smooth, easy swing. When I do that, it's a money option for when the driver simply isn't cooperating.
-
Shindig, I also have the MP-57s and wrestled with the same decision. Ultimately, I went with the MP-57 PW to maintain consistent feel with full shots across my irons. I then added a 51* MP-T gap wedge. The decisions were right for me -- it is a flexible set up.

I'd take my Driver, 23* hybrid, 7i, GW, putter

beginner looking for fairway woods
jammer59 replied to bobbydacron's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I think the Adams BUL 3 and 5 are great woods and are very attractive at the current firesale prices. I'm also a fan of the TM Burner 15* fairway. Very easy to hit and I get very good distance from it (for me) around 225yds. -
My driver ball speed ranges from low 140s to 150 in the test I had at the TM performance center in Orlando in January -- I was still hitting my driver for crap until I had the stock RE*AX shaft cut from 45 3/4 to 44.5. Oddly, it was just about the same range with my 3 W.
-
Well -- I've been hitting my driver like crap so I had it cut down from 45 3/4 to 44.5 (a TM Burner 10.5*) I have a straight low to mid flight boring trajectory now -- increased consistency on the sweet spot and I'm disappointed if I don't net 250 - 260. This is with a 90 - 95 mph swing speed. My standard 7 iron is 155 to 160.

Best equipment purchase... EVER!?
jammer59 replied to sirshanksalot's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I recently picked up a used 17* Nickent 3DX (orig model) hybrid for $40. I've tried TM Burner, Mizuno Clk, Adams and others and they've never been right. Too high, too stiff, always too something. In several rounds with the 3DX, I've found my 220 yard club -- sweet off the tee and easy from the fairway. Just swing easy. For about the price of a dozen balls, I've got a winning club for tight par fours and long approach shots. Very pleased.
