  1. Thanks for the response. I am a fairly new golfer (and analytical minded), but I have noticed that most tips that involve a "feel," rather than a technical example of what needs to happen, work much better for me. But at the same time, having to "feel" something, isn't necessarily any more natural feeling than trying to imitate someone else's technique. You've mentioned the subconscious in a few other threads, what exactly do you mean by this (relative to the golf swing, of course)? Would it be the same as examples like: "Just relax", "Don't think about it", "Clear your head", etc.? If not, what would you consider the differences to be?
  2. Adam, Can you go into more depth of what and how you teach your students? If your not teaching them body sequence (or telling them to consciously focus on it), what are you spending your time telling them in their lessons?
  3. If you had a desire to learn, 10,000 hours of practice will produce good results regardless of method IMO.
  4. For a pitching wedge, I would say stay in a 4 to 5 degree difference from your 9 iron, then building higher lofted wedges at 4 degree increments seems to be about normal (but that could vary on preference).
  5. Have you purposely been tweaking your address posture? It seems you look much more upright in the second video. Also, you have a large curve in your lower spine, try to relax and straighten the lower spine. You seem to have a very "armsy" swing, very little hip rotation. If you rotate a little more, it might help you not cut across the ball.
  6. Good thread, I definitely learned a couple of things. I did like this quoted post in particular. As a newer golfer, it certainly saves time if everyone has tracked the ball.
  7. I was with a few family members fishing off a boat one time as a storm began to roll in, when a guy (not from thunderstorm country) all a sudden says "hey guys, check this out!," as he put his index finger about 6 inches from his graphite rod (sticking straight up) to show us the continuous blue arc flash between his finger and the rod. He just thought it was the greatest thing he'd ever seen. We tackled him immediately and got off the water safely. I've been very cautious of thunderstorms since, and although I still enjoy them, you won't catch me enjoying them on a golf course.

  9. And it probably wasn't fun for any skilled player to wait on you when you first started and sucked. Newer players are slower for two reasons. They take way more strokes, and they just don't have the actual feel of how long they are taking. Both things improve with the frequency of play. But there are always new people coming into the game, so its always going to be somewhat of an issue.
  10. I still think the average players swing would be affected (perhaps only a tiny bit) without golf shoes on the range, even if they don't over swing. I don't think you can flex the knees fully without the feet shifting a little (without golf shoes). As for over swinging and it causing lack of balance and extra feet movement, I totally agree. I over swing a bit and notice that my balance is inconsistent.
  11. Agreed. I wouldn't fall over, but my feet will move and definitely affect my swing. Some people might not notice the difference, but that might mean you don't use very much of your lower body in the swing.
  12. From here - (linked by iacas in the 5SK thread) - http://www.golftipsmag.com/instruction/full-swing/lessons/5-keys.html I'm personally working on a still head right now, and this photo comparison has helped me more than anything else. Although I don't think you look exactly like this in the back swing, you definitely do in the down swing (which I believe is faking secondary axis tilt).
  13. Just do my best to show up 45+ minutes before tee time, have a beer, take a look around. Anytime I show up 30 minutes or less before tee time, I feel tense and rushed for the first few holes.
  14. For sure. Just need to involve the lower body much more. I would focus on straightening the right leg on the backswing first, then making a full follow through. I prefer to practice "leg and knee work" without a club first. It also appears that on your 4th shot (which looks like the best to me), you are standing closer to the ball.
  15. I would say anything that curves significantly more than intended.
  16. Thanks for the videos Mvmac! Very cool.
  17. I'm pretty new to golf as well, and I used to hip sway a lot. Here is what helped me eliminate the sway: Don't feel like the right shoulder is going up. Feel like the left shoulder is going down. Feel the flex in the left knee. If you don't feel it, take some slow swings or ghosts swings until you feel it. When your hips slide to your right, its very hard to get any flex in the left side because all your weight is on the right. Steady head. If your head moves backwards (or any direction), chances are your weight will too. Turn the hips. These ideas helped me greatly.
  18. No method for the madness for me, but I agree, white glove all the way.
  19. I was really mind wandering today, and just have a few questions about the physics of shaft length (leverage, in my mind). These are my assumptions : 1. The longer the shaft, the faster the club head speed will be (assuming all body motions are the same). 2. Clubs are lengthened and de-lofted at approximately the same rates because it creates the optimal distance based on the same body motions (swing each club). Here are my questions: 1. How much distance would you lose (percentages, because everyone hits their clubs different distances), if you took your 4 iron head and put on your PW shaft? 2. Why don't club makers/manufacturers make club sets with less than 1/2 inch progressive differences in shaft length (i.e. 1/4, 1/8, 1/16) for newer golfers that obviously need to focus on accuracy rather than distance? Thanks for reading.

  21. I frequently over swing as well. I have really been focusing on 5SK #1 - Steady Head. When I over swing, it is almost impossible for me to keep my head still throughout the swing (from what I can feel, and been told). So I've just strictly focused on keeping the head as steady as possible, and make changes to accommodate a steady head. I have noticed that by focusing on reducing the movement of my head, I don't feel as rushed or fast with my swing; without ever directly telling myself "just swing slower."
  22. Congrats!
  23. Is this even possible if the swings are the same? If so, how do you accomplish this?
  24. Really? Maybe you are only referring to the swing itself or are referring to low handicappers, but I feel many things can be changed independently, in particular, at address. Shaft lean, face angle, head and hip position, spine angle, tilt, and others; which I feel can all be tweeked independently and then produce much different results with the same swing. Hmmm.. I've rewritten this sentence five times over, because this is a bit confusing. A lot of it just seems to be in the wrong category to me! The items in your "more complicated rules" seems as if they could often be fixed with changes at address, which I think is a lot easier to grasp and mimic than changing swing angles, face angles during the swing, and swing speeds. Once again, just a couple of thoughts from a beginner....
  25. Awesome! I'm chasing that milestone as well. Glad to hear it feels as good as I imagine it to! :)
