TopFlite Gamer V2
Big_M replied to tristanhilton85's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
agreed... they shred like crazy, but felt great. maybe a touch harder, but very close, and MUCH, MUCH more durable... I have one sleeve left and will pick up another dozen or two soon. I have only played the 330 Rx for 1/2 a round... certainly the V2 will loose a little spin from urethane balls, but it's the next best thing. To me the V2 is a slightly longer, slightly cheaper NXT Tour. -
Course Management! Mainly just playing more golf will improve this... but a few of the big mistakes I see most high cappers make are as follows... 1) trying to make up for a bad shot with a miracle shot 2) picking a club based on the 1/5 shots that they actually hit that well 3) planning... plan for the next shot 4) knowing your game and limitations - don't play a shot you have 10% chance of pulling off 5) wasted strokes around the green

Sandhills / Pinehurst - anyone played these courses?
Big_M replied to Big_M's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Most courses will have several tee boxes and most courses in that area aren't overly tricked up (T-road and the Pit being 2 exceptions). July is a good time since it is VERY hot and most courses are little cheaper at this time. I would definately try to have everyone play at least one Donald Ross course... Pinehurst #2 and Pine Needles being the BIG 2, but Southern Pines is a much more affordable option if you want to sample a classic Donald Ross course... and it is short and very playable for most anyone. My brother-in-law loved it and he has only cracked 100 once in his life. Nothing about Legacy Golf Links or Whispering Pines, or even Pine Needles made them tough for a beginer... my wife played all three with me, and her best score was at Pine Needles, but she also loved the other two. I wouldn't get too hung up on difficulty, maybe just make sure I played a couple of the older more historic type courses, and a couple new ones. -

When are you going next month? We will be there June 15 and 16, and maybe another day depending on our schedules. Any idea what 2 you might work in... I have heard Longleaf is pretty nice as well as Little River I absolutely loved that course... I have heard Mid-Pines is fantastic as well. One of these days I'll go back and play both along with Pinehurst #2. -
Affordable 3-piece ball: Suggestion?
Big_M replied to ohiolefty's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Lost Golf Balls is a bit cheaper and has the same stuff... FWIW -
I wasn't insinuating you would... just trying to draw a line for the OP in case he was actually thinking of making a playbook from this thread. Sometimes people actually follow discussion board advice.

Anyone have some good ideas for 2-man golf betting games... I am about a 10 now and he is around a 5... we do a lot of Nassua match or stroke play with him giving me strokes. Once in a while we do straight up skins with carry-overs and/or greenies. Just looking for a few more ideas. Note: we are going on a little 4 round, two day trip, and if anyone has any ideas on a small 72 hole bet... please share.

I am going to play Tobacco Road, Anderson Creek, and Foxfire East and West. I only live about 2 hrs away and I am taking a trip with a golf buddy to play 4 rounds and stay one night. I have already played a few in the area... Pine Needles, Southern Pines, Whispering Pines, Legacy Golf Links, Tot Hill Farm. Anyone played any of those four or have any comments on the Pinehurst / Sandhills area. I know T-road is pretty wild and most hate or love it, but even those who hate it say they are glad they played it once. I have played Tot Hill which is also Mike Strantz, and while I would hate to play it often is is fun 1-2 times a year. The other 3 courses I booked are much more traditional. I was just curious if anyone had played any of them.

I love playing with a few guys who can talk some sh___. Nothing is more fun than trash talk during golf, you just have to know when to back off... as long as it's all in good fun and your opponent can take it. Just mention something about his swing... "are you trying to take the club back more inside, it sure looks like your swing is a little more flat today." Some of these enter the realm of being an ass in my book. I think getting in someone's head with a comment or trash talk is OK (see above), but moving and making noise during someone's swing or making a comment right as they are about to begin their takeaway is bogus. I know both myself and a few others I play with would all be OK with some serious smack talk or watch out for that water, but we would all be a bit pissed by someone walking directly behind us during our swing, or saying nooonan as we swung or otherwise. In my eyes one behavior is OK with buddys, one is being an a-hole regardless.

Yeah... it's way too early to count them out. I was sooo glad Yzerman carried himself better than Gretzky in Salt Lake. Gretzky is great and all, but he acted like a little baby in Salt Lake... made me sick watching it. That's going to be a hell of a game... definately worth missing work. Also, I think NBC Olympic website might have a live feed if you must work. yeah... 15-20 minute break is to resurface the ice... which gets pretty chewed up. My 2 cents, but hockey is by far the most exciting team sport to watch... very fast paced and not full of stopages in play. In football and basketball (especially at the end) you have constant stopping of play with commercials. In hockey most commercials are between periods, so if you have a DVR you can watch a hockey game in about 75-80 minutes... and you don't have to FF all the time, mostly just between periods and 1-2 commercials per period. I am biased, but hockey is about the only sport I really follow on TV other than golf.

I fell asleep (watching it on DVR after my hockey game) while they were waiting on the group with the other 9... woke up, went in to check the highlights on the computer and saw that Goydos did "something" bad... read a little more and WOW... whish I had stayed awake just a bit longer... looked like a crazy finish.
-
Agreed... playing with more is NOT golf... it is whacking around a ball for FUN. I don't really care if you are not playing me for money or otherwise, but anyone who does it for anything other than a practice round in which you are trying things out (maybe for a tournament or something), is a clown. To me it would be like some teeing thier ball up on each shot or kicking thier ball out from behind every tree... it is illegal and if you do it you are not a golfer. Nope. yeah some chubby guy, Phil something or another had some success with such a strategy.

Affordable 3-piece ball: Suggestion?
Big_M replied to ohiolefty's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
While I have only tried these for one cold weather round... I liked what I saw and felt. Tri-speeds seemed mushy and inconsistent to me.... just my .02 I love gamers minus how they shred... maybe version 2 will be more durable. I am planning to try the AD333, NXT Tour (which I have played), new Gamers, and E5's... one of those will be my ball for the year... hopefully. -
When I saw this thread I was scared to read it... these discussions usually turn ugly. Instead of answering I will ask a few questions... 1) Why would someone who believes in evolution mock Christianity with those disciple fish with feet? 2) Why do so many Christians insist on fighting amongst themselves over how communion is given or how to worship? 3) Why do some atheists feel so strongly AGAINST religion. 4) Why are we talking religion on a golf board. Maybe a discussion of how religion impacts or doesn't impact our golf games would be more appopriate.

yeah... it didn't look good for him last season, and the way he smoked and worked his body I'm not too suprised. I'm sure it will be tough on his family and my prayers are with them.
-
I'd say he has about a 15-25% chance of winning one, so I voted no. I think he WILL win one, but not sure when. There are at least 10-15 players I think must eventually win one, and another 5 who I think will win more... so it's just a matter of timing.
-
I tend to agree... Phil just can't play another way... it would not work for him. Also, he is pretty successful, but like Greg Norman we may always think how many he COULD have won instead of how many he did. Long putters SHOULD be illegal... they are a joke, but I'm not going to sit around and call people cheaters until they ARE illegal.
-
I think you're way off base... the fact is these wedges ARE legal and the TOUR needs to address the issue and reach a settlement with Ping or or the players. Phil is making a good point, as is anyone playing these clubs. I agree... with this, no question about integrity here. I don't think anyone (including Phil) would argue the fact that he IS playing the Pings because they have "better" grooves. What exactly does your point have to do with the fact that all these players are well WITHIN the rules and NOT CHEATING!

Return of the Colored Golf Balls
Big_M replied to iacas's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
voted yes... I'd never play them, but would like watching other people play them. -
Not in this case... I despise iron covers, but love my visors. For me both are about functionality. I need eye protection other than sunglasses, and visors are much cooler on hot southern days. Iron covers are a waste of time and pain in the butt, and not using them doesn't effect the performance of my clubs. YES to visors... NO to iron covers... function first!

Garmin Approach or iGolf... niether require maintaining yearly fees. Skycaddies are nice, but the fees are a bit high. Upro would be my third choice. Just look at the units and decide what features are impoartant to you, and whether or not you care about subscription fees. Check what courses are availible for the model you want. iGolf, Skycaddie, Upro and Garmin are all pretty accurate, it just depends what your preferences are.

Driver - 365 3w - 300 2h - 260 3h - 240 4i - 220 5i - 200 6i - 185 7i - 170 8i - 160 9i - 145 PW - 135 GW - 110 LW - 95 putter - 200+ just because I hit my drive 365 doesn't mean I'm lying. P.S. all "how far do you hit" threads should be immediately closed, new forum rule... I can't stand the smell of so much BS.

I would hate playing 90% of my rounds on one course, but three I could handle. How much do you play... $3000 isn't all that cheap. I know I can play some real nice courses for $20-30 a round if I play during the week, walking at some. So essentially I could play 100 weekday rounds for under $3000. I don't always walk, and I play weekends sometimes... but I can play the same courses for $10-15 more on weekends if I look for deals and buy discount cards, etc. Bottom line... I don't usually spend $3000 a year on greens fees and I play 50-60 times a year. The unlimited range is nice, but I can still hit the range a fair bit and spend under 3K a year. Someday I might join a private club, but it won't be to save money. I will join because my family can use the pool, tennis, etc; it is convenient and less crowded; and all the other benefits of being a member at a private club.

******BEST ANSWER******** that's hilarious... I would be so scrared to play that guy!
