Generalising about people based on their handicap is kind of a requirement of interacting on a golf forum! Would you prefer that no one assumes anything ever? So the 26 handicapper is potentially a great ball striker / putter / iron player / driver / etc The plus golfer is potentially dreadful at pitching / putting / iron play/ driving etc OF COURSE NOT we have to assume a few general things GENERALLY - LOW HANDICAPPERS WILL PUTT BETTER THAN HIGH LOW HANDICAPPERS WILL HIT WEDGES BETTER LOW HANDICAPPERS WILL HIT IRONS BETTER LOW HANDICAPPERS WILL HIT BETTER BUNKER SHOTS LOW HANDICAPPERS WILL HIT FURTHER GENERALLY SPEAKING GOLFERS MISJUDGE DRIVING DISTANCE BY ALMOST 50 YARDS GOLFERS ON FORUMS ADD YARDS TO TEE SHOTS - I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT - THE ODDS ON A BUNCH OF 20 HANDICAPPERS SWINGING WELL ENOUGH TO HIT THE BALL 300 YARDS ON AVERAGE AND YET STILL BE 20 HANDICAPPERS do not stack up etc We need to generalise - one of my expressions is this - OUTRAGEOUS CLAIMS NEED OUTRAGEOUS PROOF! You want to work on a solid practice routine on the range and on the course, if you can isolate each shot as one shot then hitting a cut 3 iron on the range should have the same approach as a 9 iron on the 17th when you are on a good score. k

I think we are conditioned when it comes to golf to assume the bigger numbers are correct and alwayS question poor results which contradict the best possible scenario, rather than vice versa. Example, LD event called Thunderball, lots of guys wondered how they put up 210mph ballspeed and the ball ONLY went X yards - Not one competitor said, Wow I hit my normal distance but dont know where that 210mph ball speed came from! We all want to believe we hit further than we do! 250 yards avg carry - is not far from the avg pga tour hitter who swings (and has done for a decade) at around 112 - 114mph k

There are two categories here one - golfers = we know how tough golf is two - non golfers = they know how easy the pros make it look to take somone from category two to category one takes about 1 topped drive on the 1st! k

I am a good golfer and a long hitter - My post was more about the fact that there is a lot of crap talked on forums and wherever golfers gather and it self perpetuates. Now I admit I probably shouldnt have posted the hybrid out the range thing but It was to prove how ridiculous the 315 yard thing was rather than to say I hit a hybrid out the range. PS the hybrid is past tense, the thing snapped and the big bit is in one of the water features - twas a BEN ross something or other. As far as power goes I have a lot - my longdriveseries is currently running in the UK and the leader is on 393 yards, - I hit 389 yards BUT this is not on the leaderboard as its my tournament. An example of where crap information on driving distance comes from MY local range in Scotland is meant to be a national fitting centre, I told the head pro, that the distances were wrong as I know for a fact I cannot hit my clubs as far as was claimed The marker said it was 315 yards to the fence where I was hitting (I always go to the longest part of the range) - I told him it was wrong and he said he knew its actually only around 285. Now remember this is the head pro - THE ACTUAL DISTANCE IS 260 YARDS!!!!!!!!! I can knock my hybrid out the range and the first time I went to the range I though someone must have turned the gravity off as I was hitting my hybrid over a 40foot fence at 315 yards! EVERYONE chooses to believe the distances though and on the course never question why they dont hit it as far - I should mention, hardly anyone EVER reaches the fence Why DO people automatically think on the course that there is something wrong as they were hitting 300 at the range and rarely think, why is it I only hit 250 on the course and yet the range tells me 300?! k

WHY is it that golfers repeatedly on golf forums repeat the following post - with slight variances The guy hits it 280 yards, but I laugh as I put my iron closer and he generally misses the green and 3 putts - I usually tie the hole or beat him by one. SORRY TO BURST YOUR BUBBLE BUTTHE FACT is, the LONG HITTER is more likely to win the hole than the short hitter FACT. Why is it that someone can have a golf swing that is capable of hitting the ball a long way but is automatically inept in other areas? The answer is that is just blain BS, the long hitter is more likely to win ANY GIVEN HOLE. My old man is a prime example, he has a lot of skill, is very consistent, rolls in lots of putts, but NEVER beats me, the reason being he hits the ball just about 220 yards - He simply does not have the power to play the golf course as he likes (power = options) - course is 6650 yards with little run at sea level - some par 4s he aint reaching and I am hitting wedges, OF course on some holes he does win OBVIOUSLY but the fact is POWER is VERY important if you want to play to a certain level. He is a 10 handicap UK = approx 7 in the USA - but he will NEVER get better as the course is so long for him.

250 Is a respectable carry distance? Well its more than 50 yards further than the average golfer who hits the ball a total of around 200 yards, so YES it is! k

I use a longdrive lofted club so a STRONG 3 wood would be almost like a lofted driver, maybe 12 degrees would be good to keep the spacing sensible. Not owned a 3 wood since being a posey junior that wanted a matching set! Holy crap you can get a 3 wood with 12.5 degrees? That is the same as some drivers!

i am fairly sure there has been a round in the 110s at pinehurst, the highest ever score was recorded by the same player during the round, something like a 27, going back and forwards over lightning green from a bunker. If this is wrong dont shoot me as this is a distant memory not google!

R S L X these dont mean anything as they are not consistent one S can be weaker than the next and they vary so much from manufacturer to manufacturer that you cannot say what a Stiff shaft. They are only a guide that if you buy a V2 for example the X will be stiffer than the S.
