Don't play with her if it frustrates you so much. Suggest lessons, and I agree, if she is persistent she must like it to some degree so let her keep playing despite her limitations.

What make of glove do you wear...
rangerat replied to PutterHead's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
FootJoy for me too...I like the type with the magnetic coin type ball marker. -
I was also at my local Golf Galaxy hitting into the simulator the other day. I asked the guy there how accurate the readings were and he answered that the swing speed, ball speed and smash factor were very accurate but the distance can be a little off. I had the opposite experience as others who have posted concerning the reported length. My drives were going anywhere from 320-340 yards on average. I am long but that is longer than I usually hit. I noticed that the carry distance was close to reality, around 275(ish) but the roll out was huge on the simulator. In reality I never get anywhere near that kind of roll on a drive. Of course, maybe it was the driver I was using. If I thought that to be 100% true I would have walked out of the store with the Cobra Speed Pro D. I still think it is fun and fairly accurate in many ways, for example, I saw a lot of guys in front of me hitting slices with the driver and when I got up I was hitting draws which is typical for me.

I used to feel the same way about hybrids as your dad does but now I know what an asset they can be. I didn't necessarily think they were cheating but just not as cool to carry in the bag.

HELP! Golf Cleats won't come out!
rangerat replied to YogiTKE's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
What type of spikes? Q-locks, threads...? A little WD-40 at the base might help, don't get the WD-40 on the top or the tool will slip. Also, before the WD-40, make sure you have cleaned out all dirt with a stiff brush. As you are turning the spike tool also use a lot of downward pressure. Good luck! -
How to pick the right ball?
rangerat replied to DBake's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
When you are fit for a ball they put you on a launch monitor and look at all the specs. They look at launch angle, spin rate, etc. and try to find a ball that gets you as close as possible to the ideal results for your existing swing. If you do get fit make sure it is at a place with a launch monitor and not just the local pro watching you and making a suggestion. -
I'm glad that you and your playing partners can have that kind of fun. I have seen clips from the past where even the pros did this sort of thing to each other. I.E. Lee Trevino pulling out a rubber snake on Jack Nicklaus on the tee box. Because I could not think of how to "sneak" the exploding ball on to my partners tee, and because they just look fake... I really talked it up about the fact that I was going to SMASH my tee shot as hard as possible, really drill it, etc. I used the ball on my own tee after talking at length like this and then bang-poof up in smoke. The initial look on my partners face was priceless.

How to pick the right ball?
rangerat replied to DBake's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
You can be fitted for a ball much like being fitted for clubs. I know that Golf Galaxy does this type of fitting. I have not been fitted as such but it seems like a good idea. -
Yes, I practice. I like to practice as much as I like to play. I go to the range at the course near my house. I go a couple of times a week. I also go by myself and play practice rounds a lot during late evenings in the summer. I think it is fun to be out on the course when it is very quiet (late evenings) and you can hit 2-3 balls off each tee box and try different shots.

swing question to people who play tennis and golf
rangerat replied to pendlebg's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I do play tennis and golf but I seem to be better at golf (and now play much more golf than tennis). What you are referring to sounds like what we in golf refer to as the "flying elbow". I had this problem when I first took up golf; I played tennis for years before I ever tried golf. I never thought of my flying elbow as a tennis type move but I guess that it does make sense. -
Canasawacta Country Club, semi-private, 18 hole upstate NY, $759/season. The best part is that it is 1/2 mile from my house.

I don't drink on the course (or off). It may or may not help the swing as some have suggested but I believe that it will impair your judgement...so much for course management after a few.

You meant to say 11 pars and 7 birdies. Even Tiger might have a hard time shooting a 65 playing 20 holes. I agree, it's going to be great weekend for golf!

Graphite or Steel shafts for irons??
rangerat replied to mphsglf's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Because you said you are getting fit and just want info so you know what questions to ask at the fitting... Generally steel gives more control but less distance in irons. Graphite is more forgiving on the body (joints, hands, etc.). With new technology the difference today is minimal compared to the past. Like it or not, most guys think it is not as "cool" to have graphite shafts in irons (just in case this matters to you). -
which iron will u recommend for beginner?
rangerat replied to simpleday's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Any solid, good name brand "game improvement" club would probably be fine. I do suggest that instead of spending too much $ on your first set of irons you spend a little extra cash to get fitted by a pro. Having the correct length, lie, grip size, shaft flex, etc. may be more important than the actual club brand. When you are getting fit, hit all the brands you are considering and see which one feels better, looks better, etc. -
I own performance, athletic, and saddle. Which shoe I wear depends on the clothes I am wearing, i.e. shorts, pants, etc. I will say that the right performance shoe will go well with any clothes. I will also say that I refuse to wear the golf sandals! I know some guys love them but golf and sandals?... just my personal preference.

There could be so many thing that cause this. Go to a pro and have them watch you and make suggestions/corrections on the spot. Having said that, It always helps me with any swing issues I'm having to slow my swing down by 25%-50% on the range. This does a lot to help me see, feel and ultimately figure out what I might be doing wrong.

What kind of camera do you use? + request for free advice
rangerat replied to Q.Q.Quillume's topic in The Grill Room
Canon PowerShot A650 IS. This camera is great, it does an "action mode" where it will take pictures in a sequence, such as the golf swing. It also does video for swing analysis. -
Yeah, I'm on board with the Tiger is God thing. I guess it's better than worshipping the Flying Spaghetti Monster. This does remind me of my favorite golf joke... A guy dies and is having a tour of heaven. As they pass a golf course the guy says to the tour angel "I didn't know there was golf in heaven!" A little further along he sees a player on the course that looks like Tiger Woods and he says "wow, I didn't know that Tiger died!" The angel replies, "that's not Tiger Woods, that's god, he just thinks he's Tiger Woods."

I play on leagues and it used to bother me especially when it cost me the match. Now I have learned that people who cheat are only hurting themselves because they get a reputation for said cheating. "win if you can, lose if you must but never cheat".

First off, WOW! I agree with a couple of the others who comment on the fact that you have a very low handicap and some sub par rounds after only playing for 15 months. If you like training aids, the Rick Smith Swing Dynamics glove really makes sure that your wrists are cocking properly and in the right positions at the right time. The pro at my local club says that he feels this is the best training aid he has ever seen.

I used to have this problem myself. Sometimes swing thoughts are great but the old "keep your head down" just didn't do it for me. I guess I felt like I was keeping my head down even if I was not. The thought that worked for me instead was, "keep your butt sticking out". This actually kept my head down and kept me on plane.

Wow, thanks, the Ping site is setup great in terms of offering info on the pros and what they use. I wish you could see this same info on all pros and their equipment. I just think that it's fun to see. I notice that Ping has 19 pros listed and all but three of them have drivers listed at or over 45" long, Chris Stroud 47" WOW! Some of them don't give driver info, must be they don't play a Ping driver.

Go to a golf shop, (Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, etc.) get on a launch monitor and get properly fit. Usually they do the fitting for free if you purchase the clubs they fit you for.

Love the bug, confused me when I first saw it. Is it copyrighted, I might steal it? RE: T.J.K.s GIF bug
