  1. I recently, in a fit of frustration, had my Ping G5 reshafted with DG X-100 at 43 1/5" and a D-3 swing weight. My objective was to get a shorter, stiffer shaft for better control. It did the trick, I'm able to keep it in play much better than the old longer shaft (Aldila NV 75g stiff). There is some distance loss, but not much. However, I have to swing really hard to hit the club well. If I were to try again I'd get a slightly looser shaft, or tip the Aldila and put it back. The good news is the experiment only cost about $30 and I still have the old shaft if I want to put it back. I'm keeping the driver the way it is, but I have been fitted for a new driver. Shorter, stiffer shaft than the old G5, longer and more flexible than the new G5. My hope is that I can keep the new driver in play when I rip it, but also be able to hit it well when I smooth it.
  2. From 100 yards, I'm typically taking a regular swing. I may cut or draw the ball, move it back in my stance, shorten my swing etc. But I wouldn't consider any of those things to be a dramatic departure from my regular swing. That allows me to address the ball without taking the number of swing thoughts going through my head to double digits
  3. I would disagree if the swing you describe is a dramatic departure from your regular swing. Better to take an extra club and take a shorter swing.
  4. Yow! No match play against you until your index adjusts!
  5. The ones that feel better to you. They're both high quality, the choice is completely subjective.
  6. My Mizuno mp-r wedges all have "wedge" shafts. I don't notice much difference (any really) between those and the s300s in my irons. Driver swing speed is (or should be irelevant). How hard do you swing your wedge? I never swing as hard with any of my wedges as I do with the longer irons. I'd spin the ball off the green or skull it 200 yards across! The greater the loft, the less side spin there is in relation to backspin and the less draw or fade.
  7. I was just fitted for a driver last weekend. My swing speed was typically 108-112 high speed 115. This is a typical agressive but not 100% swing. Ended up with a KZG SPX 9 degree with a Fuji Rombax, stiff shaft, tipped to make it slightly more stiff (but not as stiff as the X). Not exactly cheap, but it will fit me (or they'll keep working until it does) and, consequently will last me a while (I don't purchase new equipment each year No way I would have happened upon this combination by chance, and no guarantee that your similar swing speed will result in similar optimal setup. Get fitted.
  8. Not only does he golf, he putts better with pleated pants!
  9. Ditto. "Hell no" is acceptable. Just plain "No" is polite.
  10. BTW, noticed watching the Bridgestone today the temp there was 76. Glad *someone* had balmy weather!
  11. 99.9 with 88% humidity today in the Kansas City area according to weatherunderground.com. A bit more breezy than it was yesterday (not a bit of wind yesterday). It should be this way until Wednesday. We get at least a couple of weeks of this every year. A cart sucks compared to what? Sitting at home? I agree it's better to walk but when it's bordering dangerous to walk, the cart suits me fine.
  12. Practice round. Shot 82 this evening with 3 doubles. (actually one of those doubles is an X so 82 is my ESC score). Hit the ball pretty well; just a few bad breaks and mistakes. Highlight (or lowlight): number 11, long, straight par four. Tried to cut my drive and hit it straight into the woods. Next drive the cut actually cut. My approach was perfect, tapped in for bogey.
  13. There's a difference between being in a slow group and being behind slow people. Being part of a slow group is stressful for me and affects my game when I'm playing with people who don't realize or don't care and don't adjust their pace of play. On the other hand when play is slow and there's nothing you can do about it, unless you're going to be late for your wedding, why stress out? You're golfing!
  14. My club has a stack of towels and a bucket of water where it's handy. Not only nice for keeping clubs clean, but much easier to clean the ball after marking on the green.
  15. I would agree with that statement. My point was that $100000 in winnings is not equal to $100000 in take-home pay.
  16. $100000 - travel expenses - caddie fees - all the stuff I don't know about - state/federal income tax = not much (even in Kansas)
  17. No idea. I've never even seen Polo golf shoes. However one time my in-laws gave me some polo golf balls. The box was very nice, the balls were quite attractive. I think they were rebranded top flights. I ask this in complete seriousness: does Polo make quality *practical* golf shoes? I percieve Polo as purely style over substance, but am willing to be proven wrong.
  18. Big Fee for club entry $500/mo club fees $600 for irons last year, probably will last 'til 2012 $? for the driver/fairway wood I'm going to purchase in the coming weeks. Probably will last 1-2 seasons $49/month for balls Similar expenses for wife and three kids. Rewards: Played with my granparents. Play regularly with my parents. Expect to play for many years with my wife, kids and future grandkids. Worth it.
  19. The full shoulder turn indicates that you are using your larger core muscles more in proportion to your smaller arm muscles which can (but is not guaranteed to) result in a simpler, more repeatable, more powerful swing.
  20. I have a Sun Mountain Superlight 3.5 which I like very much. Light, sturdy, comfortable straps, has pockets in all the right places.
  21. The handicap rankings indicate the order in which you give (or take) strokes. So if you get three strokes from your opponent, you get them on the number 1,2 and 3 handicap holes. They're not necessarily the hardest holes on the course, they're the holes that high handicappers are most likely to need a stroke on. Low handicappers may consider other holes to be more difficult.

    Which tees?

Is the course rating/slope determined differently for "ladies" tees? FWIW, my club has no such designation. The tees are called: forward, club, regular, championship.
  23. Our handicaps are based on stroke play (adjusted), I assume yours are too, so if he's honest his 6 is a stroke play handicap. Perhaps his comment is a way to get you into a wager BTW I don't consider match play any more or less Real Golf then stroke play. Different, sure, but I enjoy both contests.
  24. Clearly you must take the bet. If only to let us hear the end of the story
  25. I've always heard that 1. there's no standard measurement of torque, so numbers from one manufacturer cannot be compared with another, and 2. steel shafts typically will have less torque than just about any graphite shaft. Am I wrong? I'm no expert, but I would think that you would want a shaft with the least amount of torque you can handle. Assuming your hands can (fairly) repeatably get to square as you strike the ball, the more readily a shaft will twist, the more likely the clubhead will be off line. Given my (possibly faulty) assumptions, I would think a high torque stiff shaft would be useful to practically noone.
