  1. My wife and I both a concealed carry permits. She carries: 1) Glock 19 2) S&W; Hammerless Snub Nose 38 I carry: 1) H&K; USP Compact 9mm 2) Ruger LCP 380 The Ruger is a recent purchase and is small enough to carry in yout pants pocket. I bought it not as a primary weapon, but as my "walk the dog" gun. It only weighs 9.4 ounces unloaded, holds 7 rounds, and I can shoot a 6" group at 11 yards. My next purchase is a Remington 860 12 guage shotgun with 18" barrel. Just a little something to keep in the bedroom. My advice; buy plenty of ammo before January 20.
  2. For me, when I buy a sand wedge the first thing I think about is how firm is the sand at my home course. My club has pretty firm sand so less bounce. Conversely, if your normal course has softer sand get a SW with more bounce. I hit my lob wedge (60 degree) mostly off turf and I use less bounce.

    Golf Buddy GPS

Anyone have any experience with this product? Kind of interesting...no downloads, no annual fee, etc.
  4. Timeline: 1996 Place: Number 2, Par 5, Lakes Course, Spanish Trail, Las Vegas, NV Event: Presidents Cup Situation: Dogleg right, water down the right to the green. Water front & right of green. My Plight: Hit a great drive, center of fairway. Decided to go for it. Must carry 210 yards to green. Result: Beautiful 5 wood to within 12 feet. However: Too excited. 6 putt for a Snowman.
  5. I'm with Longshanks. I joined a club about four months ago and couldn't have been made to feel more welcome. This in spite of my 15 year old clubs, a swing that hadn't seen action in 10 years, and Sam's Club wardrobe. Not to plug my club (Cedar Point, Suffolk, VA) but the staff there go out of their way to be friendly. One really nice thing is the many tournaments they run. In nearly all cases the pro shop does the pairings, even for team events, in order that members get to meet and play with different folks. For example, three weeks ago we had a Lads & Lassies event in which you were not allowed to play with your own wfe or girlfriend. Four mornings a week there are blitzes were teams are drawn from a hat. Okay, okay, enough commercial but Harry is right. There are snobs everywhere...try showing up at church in cut-offs.
  6. I have a neighbor who has Tiger everything. I've played with him twice in recent weeks. In addition to the red shirt and black pants (shorts). He has Nike clubs, bag, shoes, and apparel. The only un-Tiger is he wears sunglasses backwards on his TW hat. By the way, he's 62.
  7. Scotty Cameron "LaCosta" vintage 1995. One of the first six putters Scotty made for Titleist and the rarest with only 3,000 made. Still use the original headcover. I keep a bottle of baby oil in my locker and rub down the putter head weekly.
  8. Not to worry. Once Barry (oh yeah, Barack) is in office with a Democratic congress all of your golf courses will be treated "naturally". That is until they are plowed under to make way for Section 8 housing or to save the North American Tailless Squirrel. Note to Jet Fan 1983: Buy some Nicoret gum...stop smoking. As an ex-smoker I can tell you the gum works. I'm now 7 years into their 6 week program. In June I told my doctor I'm going to start smoking so I can quit the gum. Seriously, give up the butts. They're bad for you and make you smell bad.
  9. And remember, don't give up. As I read in another thread recently, it takes longer to master golf than it does to become a brain surgeon.
  10. I have/had a set of these years ago with steel shafts. I loaned them to my brother-in-law three years ago. He seems to have forgotten.
  11. If you can afford it, private is the way to go. Many benefits , but here are a few questions you might ask (diplomatically). 1) Is club currently profitable? Clubs in the red can turn ugly. 2) Are there any pending assessments? I failed to ask this once and within six months got an assessment of several thousand dollars for a clubhouse remodel. 3) How much outside play do they allow? See #1, if they need cash they may schedule a lot of outside tournaments to raise cash. 4) Does your initiation buy you any equity? I once paid $23,000 initiation but sold my membership when I moved 3 years later for $40,000. The club takes 20% commission, but still a good deal. 5) What are food & beverage minimums? If I think of more I'll be back.

    Ryder Cup on XM

I should have stopped by this trip instead of getting spanked at the yearling sale.

    Ryder Cup on XM

My wife and I had to travel from Smithfield, VA to Lexington, KY on 9/19 and return on 9/21. Stuck in the car for 10 hours at a stretch prevented us from watching the Ryder Cup on TV. However, we have XM satellite radio in the car and got to listen to live coverage on channel 146. I don't want to sound like an advertisement for XM, but those guys did a great job. In some ways their descriptions of the action was more exciting than TV. I was wondering if anyone else heard the XM broadcast?
  14. I can almost understand leaving a wedge behind greenside. How can youy leave a driver on a tee box? Hate to say it but, maybe this is a lesson well learned.
  15. Why do you want to beat your boss? If you have a good reason, i up through 18 is as far as I'd push it.
  16. Can I use the same oil I use on my guns?
  17. I have a Scotty Cameron LaCosta that I use 3 or 4 times a week. It was in storage for about 10 years but now back in service. Should I oil the putter head to maintain its finish? If so, what should or shouldn't I use? The pro at my club that he had a freiend who had one and put something on it that removed the black finish.
  18. When, after a few holes, your opponent is getting the better of you, ask him/her, "Do you inhale or exhale on your backswing?" Works most every time. If not, remark while he's on the tee, "Isn't it amazing how your shadow never seems to bother you?"

    Best and worst

Okay, two stories: About 12 years ago, playing to a 12 handicap with my regular group, I shot a 46 on the front nine. I was pretty disgusted and told my guys I was going to skip the back, go home, and nap. They talked me into staying. I shot 33 on the back. Second story. About 10 years ago I gave up the game. I returned this June, joined a club, and established an 18 handicap. I signed up for our club championship in August. The first day I played with 3 members I had never met. I three putted the 9th for a 37. These guys just knew I was a sandbagger. On the back nine I shot 48. We were friends then.
  20. I played to an 18 handicap in our recent Club Championship. On the front 9 of the first round I three putt the 9th green for a 37 (par 36). I had only recently joined the club and was playing with 3 guys I'd never met. The further we went into the front 9, the more I sensed they felt I was a sandbagger. After a 48 on the back nine they were friendly again.
  21. Tom Kite and Vijay didn't do too badly with glasses.
  22. The new clubs part was a joke. The rest is sad and true.
  23. I'm a 15 handicap and can pretty much count on shooting mid to high 80's. If I shoot 90+ I consider it a bad day. I played this morning as part of my normal group. I'm not big on warming up so I only spent a few minutes on the range. I hit 3 or 4 pitching wedges, ditto for 8 and 4 irons. All pure. I hit 3 drivers all down the middle. Then off to the first tee. I proceeded to hit my drive right, into the trees, and under a shrub...double bogey. On number 2 I drove to the left rough, hit 8 iron 10 yards right of the green...bogey. On three (a dogleg right par 5) I hit a good drive then topped a 3 wood. No problem...just a 7 iron to the green. Shanked it OB for an 8. Three or four crummy shoots on number 4...double. Parred the next hole a par 3. To make this long story short I shanked two more mid irons and ended up shooting 52. I felt "disconnected" and out of sync through the entire front 9. I thanked my playing partners for their patience and companionship and skipped the back nine. I'd taken enough punishment. Now I feel guilty about bailing out. Do I need new clubs?
  24. Chilli Dipper's right. But, Obama also puts gas in his SUV and that doesn't stop him from villianizing the oil companies.
