  1. Distance and directional control. Path is not super important. 85% of the initial starting direction is determined by where the clubface is aiming at impact, so make sure to have a repeatable impact position. Hitting the sweetspot consistently for distance control. Reading the green properly.
  2. He´s a writer. I doubt he ever really believed or cared whether he would make it or not. His goal was mainly to sell a lot of copies of his books hence the many sensationalism in the book.(Yes, PGA Tour players are incredible players, but they are simply humans that put in thousands of hours of practice and they aren´t "The chosen ones" or "Gods") Having said that the whole idea of being a crappy golfer and then proclaiming to be able to compete with the best players in the world within 1 year is a completely unrealistic goal. He was more of a groupie/tourist than a guy that had the burning desire and belief in himself to make it on tour. In short, it´s a book written for entertainment purposes.
  3. So I´m currently working on S&T;, but I´m hitting everyhing fat. I think my backswing is alright, but on the downswing I still have early extension (something I´ve always had) and I think my arms are disconnecting from my body after impact so that the club gets away from me instead of moving around on a circular arc. Any help?
  4. I think I figured it out. I just reread parts of the S&T; book and my problem is that I´m not actively pulling my arms down from the top of the backswing position. I mistakenly thought you didn´t have to since you don´t actively lift them during the backswing. Taken straight from the book: "If your hands don´t start moving downward from the start, you´ll tend to drop your right shoulder to get the club down to the ball...The problem with that is that it shifts the shoulder center back." 5. Thanks to everyone that replied so far. I worked on keeping the head stationary today, but the result was that I was hitting everything fat. I had a good lateral shift with my hips and my upper body wasn´t tilted too far back at impact so I don´t understand why I´m still hitting it fat. My arm and hand action is also fine since I maintain a lot of lag coming down. My backswing is also good. Any thoughts why I´m still hitting it fat?
  6. Hi all, Quick question concerning the downswing. Is it okay for the head to move left (towards the target) or should it be completely stationary the whole way through? When I keep it stationary it seems like my weight is stuck in the middle instead of 90% on my left foot at impact. When I transfer my weight the head and the sternum automatically move forward which enables me to really trap the ball. However I also watched a vid of charlie wi and his head barely moves towards the target on the downswing. It seems to not move in any direction during his swing. Isn´t it impossible to transfer your weight towards your front foot without moving your head and sternum as well?
  7. I went to the golf academy of america. Here is what you can expect: + The staff is very friendly + Great opportunity to work on your game (got cameras that you can use, you get free range balls etc...) + Relaxed atmosphere + There is a tournament once a week + you get to play some nice courses + you´re in for a great time because you´ll have a lot of free time - lots of rich, snobby kids - Everything is extremely basic and easy. - Staff only knows everything on a very basic level (teach the wrong ball flight laws, got some of the most basic golf rules wrong etc...) - The degree is looked somewhat down upon when you try to apply for jobs. - They claim to have a 90% placement rate, but in reality only 3 people got a job out of 35 that were in my class.
  8. 1. I dont know why my profile says I´m a lefty. I´m right handed though. 2. A draw. 3. My bad shot is a snap hook or a big push. Quote:
  9. Hi all, DTL Front: Comments, constructive criticism etc welcome...
  10. I´m not buying that. It´s pretty safe to say that the vast majority of tour players don´t know much about the golf swing. They´re like birds that can fly, but they don´t have a clue about aerodynamics. I doubt Tiger knows much about the golf swing. Playing the game and teaching it are as different as soccer is to curling. Just like in sales, success doesn´t depend nearly as much on what you know or how good you are, but it´s all about how well you market yourself and who you know. Just look at Leadbetter, Kostis etc... I´d argue that they don´t know the proper ball flight laws and a typical lesson with them would consist of advice like "keep your head down" and "you got a little quick on that one" along with some motivational words and a couple of lame jokes and yet they are regarded as "the world´s best teachers".
  11. 1) More technology especially protracer 2) The announcing is okay except that when it comes to giving out technical information about a players swing Faldo, Miller, Kostis etc... don´t know more about the golf swing than your average driving range hacker. They have proven this many times. Get someone that knows what he´s talking about to comment on players swings. 3) Preview some of the tougher/interesting holes like in the Tiger Woods video games. 4) cool thing would be if you were somehow able to follow a particular group of your choice. This could be done via internet broadcast. ...however nothing is more boring than the European Tour coverage. So in that regard I like the Golf Channel coverage a lot.
  12. I own an insde down the line putting track. I can´t say anything bad about it. It really works and my putting has improved a lot. IMO you can´t go wrong with either one though.
  13. Everyone on tour hits it 400+ yards and has a 180mph swing speed, didn´t you know?
  14. You are standing too close to the ball. Widen your stance (about shoulder width apart with irons, little wider with driver) Your left hand grip is too strong which evokes the tendency to have too much forearm rotation on the takeaway. The club then gets flat on the backswing and behind you which causes you to lift the club to the top. From there the natural instinct is to have a steep downswing. Your misses must be a slice or a pull. The main thing for you is to weaken your left hand grip and standing a little further from the ball. Then on the takeaway you should feel like your left hand is reaching into your left pocket while keeping the clubhead outside the hands. In other words work on taking the club more straight back instead of getting it stuck behind you.
  15. Who is it? When you make such claims you gotta back it up.
  16. Rotella´s books are just mental masturbation imo. Pretty much all of his books only consist of "stay positive", "play one shot at a time", "be fearless" etc... common sense advice. Then pretty much every other paragraph is a story of him trying to convice you that he really knows what he´s talking about because his advice supposedly helped XYZ player to win on tour. Some tips might be somewhat useful for mid to high handicappers, but for better players the books have 0 value.
  17. Bobby Jones spent countless hours as a little kid chipping and putting in his parents backyard. He didn´t just someday pick up a golf club and immediately shot in the 60s. There were thousands of hours of deep practice involved. Yes, Tiger and you only seperates quality and quantity of practice and some athletic ability (hitting the ball far) which is somewhat determined by genetics (height, fast twitch muscles etc...). He got perfect mental training (father was in military) and spent 14 hours everyday on the golf course getting quality instruction and practicing deeply since he was like two years old.
  18. Sorry, I don´t ship to Boston. It´s also illegal. You sir, should be ashamed of yourself.
  19. I thought the McNabb contract was the dumbest thing I'd see all day (or decade). I was wrong - This thread wins. I once watched Clutch Mcgee, a tour pro. The moment I heard him strike a golf ball I came in my pants. It sounded like Zeus throwing lightning spears. I thought I knew how good pros were, but then I realized I grossly underestimated their otherworldy hand eye coordination. He then proceeded to hit a 450 yard drive right down the middle while doing a backflip on his follow through. Then suddenly a rainbow appeared leading into heaven and he proceeded to follow it back to where he came from. Since that day I built a shrine with his statue in my parents basement. I will never forget the day I met a real tour pro. sincerely, Airball7
  20. Thank you Mr. Rotella. That´s a heart warming story you brought up there. The people that pick up a golf club for the first time and immediately seem to have a good swing and post decent scores don´t posess some mystical talent. There are two reasons: 1) They already honed their hand eye coordination doing many other sports growing up. Hockey players, baseball players etc... will always pick up the game faster than a guy that sat on his ass his whole life. Tiger and Phil for example learned by watching their fathers swing the club. 2) They can´t count. How do you explain a guy like Zach Johson who couldn´t get a scholarship from a decent college because he wasn´t good enough? How do you explain charlie wi? He basically sucked at golf when he was younger and nobody gave him a chance in hell that he would even win a club championship someday. How do you explain Ian Poulter who was only a 4 handicap at the age of 18? Michael Jordan got cut from his high school team because he sucked. There are so many examples that disprove your loser mentality theory.
  21. "Talent" is just a made up word by the lazy to justify their failures. It doesn´t exist. Theoretically anyone can become a pga tour player. Being athletic or mentally tough is simply a bonus. A lot of guys on tour are not athletes or mentally tough. They are just regular people. The secret is practicing all day long at an early age under world class instruction. It is even possible to make it on tour when you pick up the game later in life (Y.E. Yang). However only very, very few people have the intrinsic drive to really put in the work. Golfing is a skill and just like any skill you get better at it with proper practice. Nothing magical about it. Success in golf is like success in life. The only difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is extraordinary determination. You´re welcome.
  22. The vast majority of people are also lazy, out of shape slobs that live boring lives. Greatness is reserved for those willing to pay its price.
  23. The Hobbit is in fact overrated. However golf needs to hype players up since the big afro american man isn´t dominating anymore.
