Yeah I did own LSW, bought it my first year of starting the sport. I've since donated it to my library as I thought many would get a good read out of it and the library's golf section was sparse. Like I said next time I go back and use the GCQuad I might do a comparison of my 16* mini driver, 18* and 21* hybrid and see if the payoff in accuracy and less penalties is there in terms of distance lost. I'll also redo the driver test just to get another sample of the 15 shots. I had no money for lessons this winter since I had to buy a new car. I'm stuck with this swing for this season so just want to plan it better. I'll take screenshots next time too.

So with it being the offseason still, I find myself reading and watching a lot of topics on the sport. Lately i came across Scott Fawcett and his strategy for teebox decisions. YouTube has a few videos of his but basically, for people who drive it over 270 pretty consistently, gameplanning should consider any trouble that is within a 70 yard dispersion. Now I already have gamegolf so i can see some dispersion patterns but I obviously dont tag the shots where I completely lose a ball so data is missing. I decided to go to a sim bay using a GCQuad and did a 15 shot driver test. In the end I averaged 268 off the tee in total distance. However off those 15 shots....3 were massive misses of 45, 52, and 60 yards offline. In real life at my home course and most trees courses I play those are lost balls with bad penalties applied. They would only be slightly salvageable at a course with adjacent fairways really. I would say when you look at my gamegolf rounds, the GCQuad result of 3/15 being lost/OB is accurate. So it made me start wondering as someone who has read LSW and Every Stroke Counts and understands advancing the ball far but safely.....how wide of dispersion is considered unusable for a driver? Until my swing improved would I be better off statistically going down to my 16* mini driver or just 21* hybrid? ( next time I do the simulator I was going to do dispersion tests for those)

Torrey Pines is not great.

Wrote yes pretty comfortably while thinking they could do more to make the tv product better. I know the internet golf crowd has been saying it for awhile but I agree with most of the complaints. Just too many shots missed.... Personally when compared to other similar structured sports....I kinda wish the top tour of the sport was more international. Like, I'd rather the PGA be more like the ATP with more globetrotting with multiple levels of tournies for players to pick from.

Listened today......I think the PGA is currently a bad tv product and I got a lot of insight into why today.

I dont like the bat argument. If there going to be any comparison maybe the full body suits for swimming from the Olympics years ago is the closest. Every swimmer had access to it....everyone's lap times increased but FINA banned them simply because people were too fast with the new tech. -
Is There a Golf Equivalent of the Houston Astros Scandal?
cutchemist42 replied to cutchemist42's topic in Tour Talk
Yeah the Patrick Reed is one thing. I was kinda thinking any of the Majors or 2nd tier tournies. I almost think it might be hard to fully cheat your way to a tourney of that level but I dont know the full history of golf to say so. -
Anything come close to this scandal in golf lore? I've seen this asked on other sport forums and it led to some interesting stories and takes so thought I'd ask here.

I've been thinking about this chart more after reading opinions at golfwrx on that specific part. Lots there really second guessing how it was truly measured and what age group brackets are there amongst that. I mean maybe it's just my age group and friends but as mid 30s mostly everyone I play with are in the 240s despite a wide range of handicaps. Our group does have a lot of guys that go hard at the ball so they arent hitting a lot of fairways. Younger golfwrxers than my age group definitely feel the younger kids across those handicap levels are easily above the levels mentioned. -

I mean I personally find tournament golf boring and that's subjective because I do find too many wedge shots into greens where precise distances are known. I find golf more interesting when there are more chances to miss the green and when the area around the green is more interesting. I already said it once but my casual wife who isnt into golf at all (she is a landscape architect so likes to see the courses) only "ooooo's" at short game stuff when the ball is rolling over interesting terrain or being flopped/chipped over stuff. She used to be into baseball too until the three true outcomes happened. I have no proof of this other than anecdotal reddit stuff but I feel the sentiment is growing about tour golf and baseball becoming boring for similar reasons. I also buy some of the societal pressures of courses being too big. I'll just say I worked a branch of government and had to deal personally with a newer Winnipeg golf course that moved and already was coming close to failing asthey couldnt pay for the larger property. That's also in a province that is probably too generous when it comes to tax breaks on golf courses already. If my old city of 700,000 had an example I'm sure others exist. My home course now was also built too big but it's at least not in a city. They stopped maintaining the back tees on almost all the holes. -

I think for the people that watched, the Presidents Cup opened a lot of eyes. Just for variety, I would not want it every week but give me a ratio that skews much more towards Melborune than it does to the mostly boring TPC courses. -

Maybe I just dont get the psychology then beyond the club marketing being successful. If I looked at those stats and know the club and ball wont help me, but I dont have the time to effectively practise making lessons a waste....I would simply keep the money in my pocket or use it on travel to new courses. -
Who cares? The Olympic golf was such a sidebar to the event. A simple strokeplay event in the middle of the worlds 2nd biggest sporting event is just incredibly easy to ignore.

So when I look at the graphs again and see the little distance gain by amateurs over that same time while seeing how much money people around spend on new clubs/tech, it really makes me wonder why golfers as a whole dont spend their money more wisely? The golf club tech didnt instantly help them yet they still pursue clubs over lessons, when it's the lessons/coaching/etc that got the pros to where they are. I do agree though with the current PGA golf being equivalent to the style of boring baseball played now. Golf is really the only sport where I either play it or played it but dont really find the tv product good. -

So right now...do we think we have reached peak physical ability to drive the ball in 2018/19? Do people want to maintain what is now but might not be ok if it got higher? I know some will say different sport and situation but I cant help but think of today's long distance runners likely maxing out peak possibilities in endurance racing. However, Nike came out with the shoe that was giving those runners almost a 2minute advantage and they just decided to not ban them for Tokyo. In a way it's a reverse of the golf situation. Technology increased, no one saw it as a problem because players didnt max it out physically until 10-14 years later. It is interesting listening to some of the podcasts today and reading opinions. I mean I'm not sure where Andy from Fried Egg got this stat, but adding even 150 yards to course involves obtaining on average 8 acres of additional land. In an age of conservation and the younger generation being more and more concerned about conservation and land use, it's an issue I care about as a 34 year old who works in a field related to land planning. -

Would the Masters do it? They would have the clout if they think their tourneys holes are not as memorable as they were in the past. -

I just find PGA golf boring as I find even tv doesnt do a good job of making the tee shots exciting TV. The difference between a 290 and 320 yard drive isnt obvious when watching zoomed in balls landing on the fairway so it's not good tv. I always judge the entertainment of a sport by what my casual sports fan wife "whoa's" at. 2nd to a putt on an interesting green, she is most thrilled with approach shots. I too find approach shots more interesting, but I'm afraid theres just too many wedge shots in the game. I know I'm in the minority but I both play and follow sports that have neuteured aspects of the sport for entertainment and changing values. I mean, I wasnt thrilled about spending $800 on new goalie pads when the width changed but I think the game is better for it. F1 cars are slower than they were 20 years ago but the racing is better for the neuteuring. I dont even want bifurcation.....I want a reduction across the board. -
I think compared to similar individual contractor sports the ratio is off. The top tennis players are much better off than the bottom. The talk about what is fair is a subjective political preference in a way though. I would argue as well that seeing the same guys st the top is much more interesting and better for storylines and rivalries. People look back fondly at legends and giants, and not random outcomes like the PGA or NHL.

Not my original thoughts, just saying what I've heard...... So I've been listening to a few podcasts go back and forth on this. I still dont feel I have a solid answer on how a player leaving the PGA would have his pension handled. Some are saying you cant take away a pension while others seemed to think the PGA could void the pension to stop players playing in this. Some did say that yeah, PGA golf lately has been a boring a TV product but does this address it? Saw a few forum posts compare this to another individual contractor sport, the ATP. People think think the ATP sets up rivalries better but I think that's a function of how un-random the sport of tennis is. Saw people say limiting the field to 56 players over 10 events addresses the rivalry aspect that the PGA doesn't provide right now. Some hoped more interesting courses than what the PGA goes to would be addressed. I think that's a big part of how I feel too. I personally like watching foursomes/fourball/matchplay and would be interested if these events gave us more of that.

If they went to better courses or altered some stuff to make the golf more interesting to watch I might tune in. Week after week of strokeplay concourses that are too similar gets boring to me. I've heard on Fried Egg before that the World Golf tournies were originally envisioned to be more events globetrotting around the world. If this group did something like F1 with big rounds at interesting course I might tune in. I think only the Mexican and Austin WGC events are must see.

cutchemist42 replied to iacas's topic in Rules of Golf
So just seeing this thread for the 1st time and obviously a few things about the golf world have changed since the 2015. So how would the rule change from 2019 for lost ball/ob work in these situations? I know the rule wasnt meant to be applied for serious tournaments but was allowed for less serious rounds. In the first situation the person could decide not to go back to the teebox either for pace of play or laziness but drop into the fairway at the crossing point, lying 4. -
I actually something may have changed as it does look slightly different tonight when I checked. Maybe the app updated in the background. So the new WHS system would have gone through our old scores and made any ESC to net double bogey adjustments as well?
