Looking for some advice... I have been practicing at the range with a bladed 6 iron, trying to learn how to hit the ball better while making my swing consistent. I've actually made some great progress but I find that about 1/7-8 shots I get this awful push plus. It doesn't go right (I'm right handed) it squirrels right. No slice to it. It feels awful coming off the club. It's 1/7-8 shots but it is strange. Is this a "consistent" shank. Other than this, most of my balls go where I want (if I hit the sweet spot they go further than if I do not) but... I find this odd. When I bring out my other GI iron, I get it once in a while but not so much. Any suggestions? Anything appreciated.

3 ranges within 20 minutes... 2 off grass. I grew up in Massachusetts... 5 ranges within 30 minutes... never knew there were grass ranges until I moved to CA.

I hit them straight but i really can't feel if I've hit them straight or not. I know how well I've hit the ball by the flight... I'd like some feel... and I'd like to reward myself when I break 90.

Throwing this one out there... I've been playing knockoff Callaway X-20 irons for a bit now using the saved money for lessons and it's finally starting to pay off. Having said that, I'm looking to buy some new (well used but new to me) irons and would love any opinions. My swing speed though is slow (

Best clubs for someone who sucks?

No joke... try a senior set. If his swing is that slow and odd to begin with... that might work the best. -
Gress Tee Range In NYC Area
skwon11 replied to InTheTwenties's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
yes it is. i grew up in boston and i never saw a grass range until i moved to california. -
Same problem and I agree with above... Swaying forward I don't think is a big deal... swaying back is a killer... I end up pushing and slicing and/or hitting way behind the ball. What I have found (and this is just me), is when you take your swing back straighten out the right knee... it almost braces any sway so all you can do is rotate.

Does anybody find it odd that he keeps hitting it when he's hitting it all over the place? I know he's a PGA professional but... he's trying to win right? Does it matter if he wins with it or not? I'm not a good golfer... but if I'm playing friends for quarters and I know that all my drives are slicing way right... I'll just hit 3 wood off the tee to win. It's just so strange. I think if he hit 3 wood off the tee... he'd be winning everything!

TM R7 Superquad or FT-iQ, what to choose?
skwon11 replied to Erlend's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
My vote is the TM. Long and straight when I hit it. It has an interesting feel to it to me... almost soft. Not insert soft like a putter but... softer than most. Some of friends felt the same and didn't like it at all. I don't think you'll go wrong with either choice though. -
Best wishes as I can only imagine how hard you are working!

My question, and I think the answer is Yes, is, is Nike Golf stuff getting better? They have the money for research and technology which is key for golfers now. They market very well as everybody is saying. And they seem to run their business well in the sense of... they seem to have the power to be able to put smaller companies out of business or just buy them out. I agree that I don't think they are going monopolize golf or anything but... to see them become the dominant player in golf equipment wouldn't be a shock at all.

Went to the US Open in Brookline, MA as a kid and have gone to some Champions tour events here in SoCal. Defenitely avoid the weekend. Parking at a hole and just seeing all the golfers come through is a lot of fun and low stress. But for me, especially as a kid, the best was going to the range and watching them practice... amazing.

Ping makes some great mid mallets. I don't think you can go wrong here. They are pricey though.

Driving Irons????? anyone hit one?
skwon11 replied to shankopotamus's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I think I have a King Cobra Driving Iron (somewhere in the garage) I could send to you if you wanted to give it a swing... I'd send it to you for shipping... let me know if you're interested. -
I would think it's time. I'm not a great golfer but I like reading about golf clubs and the physics behind them and so... those clubs you have, while I think they work just fine, might be holding you back a bit since they are almost a decade old. Some more distance and forgiveness won't make a 25 handicapper a 15 (oh I wish) but... 15 to 10 or, 10 to 5...

I concur with others that for me (not everybody) mats are terrible. I've been practicing a few times per week on a range with mats and feeling like I've been hitting well. I get a chance today at a range to hit off grass and... well... feels like I'm learning all over again. I'm going over every shot and every thing I've been working on (hip turn, no swaying, wrist action) trying to figure out what was wrong (hitting lots of short fat shots). Then finally the last 10 balls I'm hitting with some consistency. This is just my opinion and I'm sure others can hit off mats just fine and translate that over to grass... me... no... now I'd rather hit off dirt. Question though... teeing it up real short on a mat... can somebody explain how this is better practice? If this can be done consistently isn't this the same as mats meaning... you're learning how to hit the ball off something abnormal (all or irons off tees vs. mats) when the real thing is grass? Is the goal in this case to get the compression feel without feeling the club bottom out on the mat (because it's on a tee now)?

20+ handicappers hitting 300 yards (mild rant)
skwon11 replied to extremeld's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Is this the longest lasting thread ever? I'm just curious. This thread is amusing though... b/c... who really cares? My handicap is in the 20's (hopefully not for too long) and I drive it 225... if you drive it 300+ and your handicap is still in the 20's... well... your short game must really suck! -
Fair price for an 07 Burner
skwon11 replied to Titleist Man's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Agreed... if he's a friend... for free... or on the day you give it to him... lunch at the turn... the hot dog and soda will taste great for both of you. -
hireko, acer, dynacraft: anyone have experiences?
skwon11 replied to dmband8985's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have a friend who buys from Hireko and he has never had problems. I have a lot of my clubs from Pinemeadow and I think they are outstanding. As I improve, I hope my opinion doesn't change. I can't justify paying $400 for a driver or close to $1000 for a set of irons... I'm not putting down anybody who does (I have hit with those clubs and they are nice) but... I think my $100 driver and $200 are just fine for my amateur status -
I just don't get it. He either does it for fun (and in that case the obnoxiousness of it is funny) or he is screaming for attention.
-
I don't even carry a driver. Most of friends think I'm nuts but... on Par 5's it takes me 3 shots to get it to the green and because I can't keep it straight consistently... might as well hit my 3 wood into the fairway to set up the rest of the hole. Similar thoughts on Par 4's... If I go 3 wood/Hybrid I can get on the green in 2 (sometimes)... for me and my handicap... not much different and better than chancing Driver and then 3 iron.
-
I concur with the gallery... lessons. But I think I'd spend my money on a putter and wedge first over irons... but... lessons!
-
I say challenge him... stroke play or whatever... maybe put down some money as well. Either you'll win or lose... If you win he might get so pissed that 1) he'll not want to play with you or 2) he'll just shut up. If he wins, all of his odd insecurities will go away and he'll be well.. normal again. Sounds like an odd ball though.

Happy birthday kid. Sounds like a great birthday weekend... wish we all have one like that soon.

My 5 iron. I can just hit it without thinking... actually without worrying. It goes about the same distance everytime and usually exactly where I want it to... just working on the other 13 clubs in my bag now.
