  1. I'm from the Dayton area, but have been living in Cincinnati for the last handful of years. I lived at Four Bridges Country Club last year and had range access, but now that I've moved closer to downtown I am in the market for a course with a good Driving Range membership program! I'm pretty busy in the evenings with soccer, so I don't have time to get 9 holes in after work and have turned into a bit of a Range-rat. Can anyone make suggestions on a course between downtown and West Chester that offers an unlimited range membership, possibly some playing privileges, at a Young Professionals budget?
  2. Dayton here, I agree

  5. Finally got out tonight with my camera. I read your post before I got to the range so I was trying to have my hands "chase" the camera a little longer during my backswing. I think the hardest part for me is going to be learning how not to drop the club so far under-plane as my first move towards the ball. Anyone have any drills/tips on how to start my downswing on plane? (again, excuse the soundtrack...my camera has decided that Wind needs to sound like a violent explosion once loaded into YouTube, so I replace it with awful music instead) they shut down the range pretty early tonight to...probably hoping I'd leave. I was not pleased, so I used the shortgame area all night instead :) so heres a video of me trying to juggle a ball with my wedge for giggles...feel free to ignore.
  6. So last year I weighed in for my company's health screening at 278 pounds. That was pretty shocking, embarrassing, and sad. Instead of pouting about it, I decided to get to work, change my diet and run...run...run...run...and run. Fast forward about 9-10 months and I am now 185 pounds! Last season, I shot 2 rounds in my work golf league under par, having about 75% of my rounds staying in the 35(par)-39 range. This year, however, is a completely different story. Sure, we're only 4 weeks in, but my best round posted is a 44, with a nice grouping of 3 - 48's that followed . I know I had swing faults last year, but I kept it pretty consistent. I really want to blame the weight loss ( I now turn different, get into more athletic positions, all that mumbojumbo) but I'd rather just understand what I'm currently doing and try to build my swing, again. This is a swing from September 2012: Here is a Down-the-Line and a Face-On swing from tonight (it was windy and the audio on my camera was acting up, I'd recommend turning your headset/speakers down!) DTL Face-On I was trying to read Erik's post about "deep hands" and I was really trying to get that feeling. The part I kept feeling "Stuck" on, was trying to keep my right elbow connected to the body a the top of my swing. It just feels like I forgot how to downswing I feel great and am happy/proud of the new body type, but it is beyond frustrating that I cannot move the ball like I know I'm capable of. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  7. As I've gotten better over the years, something sure stands out. -Better players tend to let you play your game, and reserve their comments- Is it because they finally discovered the secret and dont want you to know!? Well, it is a couple things. For one, you are unlikely to find a life-altering "fix" for your swing mid-round that saves your round. Another, they have learned that the game is built on an understanding of their own golf-swing, and offering a few coaching cliches is probably going to cause more harm and confusion than resolution. They havent spent their hours understanding your tempo, swing thoughts, mechanics. I will never give any swing advice unless asked. A player might duff a handfull of shots and get frustrated and my coaching instinct will kick in and i'll say something like "hang in there, you'll figure it out. keep with it". When they ask me how I manage to do certain things I give them my 10Thousand Foot view: What am I asking the ball to do? Sure, I can spew off the ball flight laws we've all come to learn about/love here with: "the ball starts in the direction of the clubface and curves away from the swingpath" but I try to keep the thoughts and ideas simple...once you get to thinking about 200 different things, you're probably not going to be successful. to sum all of that nonsense up... if youre trying to give advice: - youre not going to fix someone's swing in an afternoon of golf. if they ask for help, give them some knowledge and understanding of why things happen, and give them the tools to make a change if youre asking for advice: -nobody is going to fix your swing from the front 9 to the back 9. dont expect it to happen. try to learn why a better player does certain things. get yourself in a better, more consistent position.
  8. my partner in my Work Golf League has been playing for 8 years now. He shot a 76 on 9 holes last week. You're fine. Focus on getting better! Have fun!
  9. I guess I'm not sure why it matters. The only time your handicap matters to me is when we are playing against each other. At that point, if you've bent a couple rules during a social round and ended with a 5 hdcp, but are probably truly closer to a 7...that is fine with me. When we play in a competitive setting, I'm going to count it as a stroke if you ground your club in the hazard or accidentally bump your ball while on the green. In that light I would consider any round where you get feedback on 40+ more swings than you normally would, a practice round. But again, if you're short on time and want to play 2 balls, sounds fun! But dont expect to play against me in a match and play 2 balls against my 1. At that point, we're not playing the same game anymore.
  10. I'm way more of a visual learner. I cant really grasp it when they say "just swing out right more!" or when they grab your club and move you to a position...it helps me significantly more if i can stand 2 feet from the instructor and see the movement, then attempt to mimic it. For that reason, I think I'd have to have an instructor that still has the "chops" That being said, I kicked field goals in college. One of my favorite coaches couldnt kick an extra point if his life depended on it, but he knew the fundamentals and the thoughts I should be having. He was a great resource. Theres room for everything if you can decipher the information coming at you.
  11. but, what about the 15' ball retriever? in all seriousness, if it's too far to reach in with your wedge and grab it, just let it go.
  12. When I saw it, it reminded me of the Tour Striker. If you flip or release your hands too early, you'll strike the ball with "the little angle on the bottom". What I visualize the concept being, is that it would reinforce the notion of having some forward shaft lean at impact, not necessarily that the design will physically make a difference upon ball-strike.
  13. I tend to wear golf shorts/pants and a golf shirt and my golf shoes when I go to a golf course. Dont really care if it is to the range or to play a round, its the same reason I wear soccer clothes when I go play soccer, and work clothes when I go to work. they are clothes designed for me to golf in.... I love listening to music when I am practicing, especially when there are people around goofing off or telling stories/yelling. I dont mind that they do those things, because golf is supposed to be fun, but I mind less when I cant hear them. I also find that now when I play without music on, Im distracted less by noise and things around me. Plus, if the fact that I wear bright blue shorts with an obnoxiously pink shirt and hit pink bridgestone golfballs distracts you when we're out on the course (since it seems to impact some people's practice sessions), then you need to spend more time working on your mental game. As far as things that bother me on the practice green: - People hitting out of a bunker and skulling their shots at people. I appreciate youre working on the skill, but maybe try that when people arent around, especially if youre being dangerous. Golf balls hurt - People who take divots on the green - Chipping on the putting green (only when signs are present advising against the act) - Hitting flop shots and not repairing your ball marks - Bringing over a bucket of balls and leaving them on the green when youre finished. Ive often been the guy who will pick up the bucket as the guy is walking away and sarcastically ask if it is ok for me to clean up after them. I understand they think they are being courteous (some of the time) and that they are giving them to someone who might follow them, but grab your bucket, grab your wedge, lift them into the bucket and put the bucket in the rough by the green. - General courtesy - I really dont care if people play little games or competitions, again, golf is fun. however, being mindful of where you are and where others are as to not limit or distract other players is key. A prime example of this would be this last season when I was at my home course. I finished my practice on the range and walked over to the practice green to work on a few things. There were 2 kids who played on the local school's golf team, probably each 14 years old. They were challenging eachother in a little game to pick a hole on the green and see who could get Up-and-Down from a series of holes in the fewest amount of strokes. They rotated around the green, varying shot types, and putting out. They were also very conscious of where I was and what I was doing, as to not detract from my experience. If I was putting towards a hole, they would pick a hole where even a missed shot wouldnt interfere with me and they would take a longer route to their next location as to not walk in my line or near the hole I was aiming at. Contrast this with the drunk group of guys in their 40's (again, no issue here, golf is supposed to be fun), who were coming off of 18 and had a bet to settle. They decided it would be a "closest to the pin on the longest putt on the putting green". They loudly hurried to the putting green and found the longest putt and without regard for the 3 of us on the green, putt by all the holes, people, balls on the green and each ran across the green after their shot. It wasnt the game that was an issue, it was the appreciation for another person's golfing experience. It's really as simple as that. Hopefully that doesnt make me douchy

  15. that is kind of what i was thinking. there was some confusion that the score may have even been 113, not 103....but still. its your coworkers, and prize money involved. if youre going to pencil whip, at least donate the prize money back to the charity.
  16. So I participated in a Shamble for work this past Friday to support a co-worker's cause for his son. The rules of this Shamble were that each team of 4 tee'd off, you selected the best drive and everyone played their own ball for the rest of the hole from the selected drive. On Par 3's, you played your own ball the entire hole. Handicaps would be applied (85%) at the end of the round. Best 2 scores for each team will be taken for each hole. My team consisted of me, a 2.9 Index, a 24 index, 20 index and a 28 handicap. We carded 1 bogey the entire 18 holes (which ended up being a net par). We made several net eagles and enough net birdies to make it feel like we would be in contention at the end of the round. We waited around for the scores at the end of the outing and a group carded a net 103. .......a net 103......let me say that again.....a net 103. At this point I cant even remember what our team's score was. The lowest handicap in the winning group was an 18, highest was given a 31. When they announced the 103, I asked the organizer if that was some kind of joke and he assured me it was not. The group of guys happily got up and accepted their group's $500 prize. For the life of me I couldnt figure out how they could have legitimately done this...for me to have been in contention (using my own index) I would have had to card a true Birdie on EVERY hole!....and then have one of my teammates shoot even par! I laughed it off and left, but add me to the group of people who will no longer play in Scrambles unless my entree fee is paid for or the cause is something I truly believe in.

  19. if you walk into a store and see it are you going to still think "what does jumping out of a car and a putter have to do with eachother"? ...will this perhaps cause you to walk over to the putter and roll it a couple times? i havent seen the commercial, but maybe the putter is so awesome, its worth jumping out of the car to go get.....they are in a hurry
  20. 100 balls in 3 hours? i spend that kind of time at the range, but not for a single bucket.
  21. -grove a comfortable swing -PRACTICE YOUR SHORT GAME -understand your ball flight -understand your misses when you get out on the course, use the knowledge you gained during your practice sessions and trust it! on my home course there is almost always a spot on the hole to "bail out". i am able to manage my way around the course understanding the risk/reward of my approach shots and putting myself into positions that will allow my short game to be successful. my gameplan to keeping my score in the 70's is to not make more than 7 bogies :) as i get better i try to attack more greens/pins but thanks to my short game i can trust i am going to get up&down; from around the green unless i get a bad lie or a misread green
  22. ahhhh i was so close. the touchy people were commenting on weight this month, not race. so close.
