  1. For a high HC'er, aggressive play is stupid play. I still play that way sometimes, but the more confident I get in my game, the less I do this.
  2. How in the world do they perform maintenance on Wolf Creek? Looks like playing in the Himalayas.
  3. They are not going to have a good player on the show unless that person is a celebrity. The show is about entertainment, not golf instruction.
  4. Paul Casey, who will proceed to taunt Monty in Butler Cabin in the jacket ceremony.
  5. As an American, I would hate to see Mike Weir off the Tour. He is one of the last of the old guard and has always been a lot of fun to watch. He's a good ambassdor for Canadian golf. Heck, most Americans are shocked when they see the number of nice courses in Canada.
  6. I got back from my LV trip last week. Played Wolf and Snow at Paiute and both Primm Valley courses. Was VERY happy with both places. This is my fourth LV golf vacation and those are definitely the best courses I've played (and the best deals IMO). Next time I plan to play Rio Secco again (played it last in 2006) and try Badlands for the first time, as well as Mesquite.
  7. Wouldn't St. Andrews be packed the week of the Open with all the tourists?
  8. The closest I have ever been is one inch at a scramble. Won two roundtrip plane tickets.
  9. I hate that chicken wing arm hanging out there. Can't figure out how he hits the ball so well with that.
  10. The website is no longer accepting that code.
  11. Quote: Sidespin comes from the difference between SP and CFA. You're right. I did misstate this. To clarify, sidespin develops whenever there is a deviation from the SP and CFA. Te target line has nothing to do with it. I do, however, re-iterate my objection to the OP's statement that spin results from SP alone. Quote: Yet the vast majority of slicers do so with a clubface square to or closed to the target, so telling them to roll the clubface more (which sends the path MORE to the left) is bad advice, and confusing advice at best. I agree that he should have clarified that "open" is relative to the SP. I also agree that rolling the clubface on an outside-in SP is bad advice because it would create a pull shot. But it would reduce sidespin, which is what causes a slice, no?
  12. Listen, I'm glad the understanding of ball flight laws is eveolving to a more science-based model and your article (and those of many others on the net) are a good contribution towards this. That is not my argument. My argument is that folks either don't understand the ball flight laws and or simply like to throw that term around in constant criticism of just about every instructor because of what often seems to be a perceived misstatement on their part. I.e., let's pile onto this instructor because I heard what I wanted to hear and not what he actually said. The OP's post is a good example: First, the new ball flight laws confirm what Martin Hall said, which is that an open club face (i.e., CFA) is the predominate factor in a slice. He didn't say an outside-in SP is the predominate factor. Second, the OP is wrong about spin. Spin is imparted by an deflection of either the SP or CFA to the target line. That is not in question, and I haven't seen any responses that attempt to clear this up. This is just more of "yeah, let's pile on the criticism of a well-known golf instructor" instead of taking the opportunity to clear up a misunderstanding. The fact that no one has cleared this up tells me that folks agree with tis misunderstanding. Now, whether SP or CFA dominates on spin I don't know. I haven't had to read all the articles on the physics of a ball flight, which I will. But this is an important point. Spin plays an important part in ball flight, whether it is a club face that is parallel to the target line with a SP that is not parallel, or the opposite.
  13. That is is more or less a traditional golf swing, just like S&T.;
  14. OK, from what I've gathered from these posts is that somehow the braintrust of expertise on ball flight laws (which I see a lot of references to on TST) is somehow concentrated all on this site, which is pretty amazing. In any case, please educamate me on what causes a slice, because as an engineer, I look at things pretty logically. And logically, I don't see how you slice the ball if the club face is not open at impact. The one exception I can envision is an extreme outside-in swing plane might impart enough side-spin to partially overcome a pull shot, but I have a hard time believing even that. I am sure that there have been plenty of studies done on ball flight using mechanical swing machines, so please enlighten me. I would also add that the Golf Channel held open auditions for the position that Martin Hall now holds, so if you really feel like he and the rest of the golf instructing universe is so far offbase on their teaching, I encourage you to apply.
  15. I haven't read the book, nor do I intend to. Call me cynical, but frankly, I am getting burned out on these stories of "average Joe lays it all on the line for a shot to play on the PGA." It reminds me of when Michael Jordan retired from b-ball and said he going to try to get good enough for the PGA. Here was a guy with unlimited financial resources, great athleticism, and plenty of confidence. MJ had no shot. Nor does the average Joe. Its not going to happen, period. If you haven't been winning statewide tournaments since you were a kid, or at least played college ball and won a few times, you're not playing in the PGA. Nor, most likely, are you playing in a mini-tour. Enjoy your life as an amateur. And, if you really think you have a shot at the PGA, then you are probably good enough to advance in qualifiers for the US Am or Mid-Am. That's something that less than 1% of golfers could ever hope to do.
  16. Its absolutely spendiferous! OK, well its nice, and I do hit it better, but it will take a little getting used to. Old driver (which I kept) is a '08 Burner, with the shaft cut down to 44.5" and a Winn Lite grip added. I compared the R11 (10.5), the Titleist 910D2 (10.5), and the Adams Speedline (9.5). I was most consistent with the Speedline and loved the look and feel at address, but it was about 5 yds shorter than the R11. It also had this weird clang when hitting the ball. It you want attention from the next fairway, this is the driver for you. The Titleist had a nice feel but didn't excite me and its performance was about par with the R11. I like the adjustability of the R11 and settled on neutral weight distribution, open sole plate and no change in loft. I actually like the white top at address although I don't think it makes the head look bigger. The one thing I found strange is that it feels much heavier than the other drivers, even though the shaft weight was about the same as the Speedline. This is my third driver in the last six years, so I am averaging a new one every 2.5-3 years. Not too bad. It nothing else, it looks good in the bag. I am taking a trip to Vegas this weekend and will test it on four courses over two days.
  17. I didn't meet last years goals, so I will post them again for 2011: Drop my HC to 12 Fairways hit: 50% GIR: 70% Five rounds in the 70's
  18. I just looked at the video. Looks like a traditional golf swing to me.
  19. Tthis is the first I have hear of the Morad system. Do any of the pros use it?
  20. You strong like bull. Seriously, that is some mean speed. My driver distance has suffered miserably. Two years ago I was averaging low 250's, now down to 235+. I need to work out more. Either that, or get a 55" shaft.
  21. Just curious. I have been using a Full Swing Golf simulator for the past few days. It measures my launch angle and distance for the following clubs: 7i: 22-24 deg, 155-165 yds 5i: 17-19 deg, 175-185 yds 5W: 16-18 deg, 220-230 yds Driver: 12-14 deg, 235-245 yds These are fairly consistent, which I am happy with. Are these launch angles considered high, low, avg? What do you folks typically see with your clubs (assuming that you can use a trackman or indoor simulator)?
  22. Pretty impressive. What is better than an albatross?
  23. I find spitting to be pretty uncouth behavior. In some environments it is perfectly acceptable, but those are few and far between. Golf is not one of them.
  24. On a golf course I show the same level of care that I would on someone's lawn (save for the divots, which I replace/repair). If you were talking with a friend on his front lawn, would you turn to side and spit a big loogie? I know I wouldn't.
