"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge
Grizvok replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Day 1: Life has been a whirlwind for the past few years (including a cross-country move in the past 8 months), and I'm finally finding myself with enough free time to enjoy getting back into playing some golf. Worked at the range on developing some new feels for my continuing work with Key #2 (weight forward).- 17,187 replies

How is the single phrase I quoted at all about neurotic/ocd behavior? He did more practice on full swing shots from bad lies than other players on tour (according to some guy).
-
Wow. I think this is the single biggest takeaway, “Most guys are chipping shots around the green to see how the ball reacts during testing,” Rehberg said. “Bryson’s out here doing the same thing, but he’s the only one I know of who’s purposely putting the ball in bad lies to see how it holds up.” Given where his game is right now, it seems like a great approach.
-
Without Googling anything, from what I know it would be relatively easy to get away with doing a cycle of Testosterone. Some of the esters leave the system relatively quickly. I'm not accusing Bryson at all but if he had actually wanted to do a cycle of test during the months off (and the PGA wasn't testing during the lockdown), it would be pretty easy to get away with.

There is absolutely nothing inherent about lifting weights that makes you automatically gain weight.

Much better on the video angle here. Keep trying to replicate this when taking video.

Players' Distance Irons versus Game Improvement Irons

What doesn't make sense is the fitting... I'd want my money back. -

If you objectively hit them better than what other information do you need? -
I spent the past two weeks not recording my swing and instead working on developing a feel that I can take to the course to bind together the two priority pieces. What I came up with is a mantra. The mantra is pretty simple and goes "set and stomp". The "set" part refers to the actions of the wrists in the backswing to try and get my hinging done relatively early, and the "stomp" refers to what I do in transition to the lead foot. I don't think it is a coincidence that my work on this produced one of my better rounds so far this season, which was an 85 (including an awful 38 putts) on a relatively difficult 6700 yard course. Clean up the putting a bit (especially the 3-putts) and I could've had a 70's round in the making. Ball flight has been changing towards a slight draw, which I was able to calibrate nicely by doing alignment work these past two weeks. I'll be getting back to some more technical work this week by videoing my swing and taking stock of what exactly the picture is with the new mantra.

Shot an 85 at Rolling Acres. Played from the tips which was about 6700 yards. This coulda shoulda woulda been a round in the 70’s had the putter showed up. 38 putts total. Driving was incredible. Iron play was decent. Short game had some let downs but was still reasonably good. And as previously mentioned, putting was atrocious.

A huge part of getting to the top in a better position is going to be about the torso turn. I would do the COVID-19 Day 2 practice drills.

The best players in the world don’t have their weight and pressure forward throughout the entirety of the swing. There is a small shift laterally backwards often only an inch or two plus a pressure spike on the trail foot. I’d say it’s easiest for a newer golfer to just worry about making a centered pivot and not necessarily focus on what this guy is suggesting. Regardless, getting weight forward is crucial, but I don’t think the majority of it has to start and stay there.

Why do you see people like @iacas talk about using the mirror and the feedback it can provide? Surely he isn't inside hitting balls while using the mirror. Same goes for a lot of the earlier COVID-19 practice plan drills. Is it doing harm/no good at all to practice my takeaway to A3 and not hit a ball at all? I highly doubt it. And who said anything about not hitting balls whatsoever? I don't think anybody (from this forum) said anything to that affect, although I guess the tiny little tidbit about being in lockdown from the IG post could be construed that way. -

It depends what you are working on. If I'm working on ingraining my new swing thought of beginning the transition with a left knee bump towards the target and down, does it really matter that the club in my hand is 2' long? Probably not. -

First of all, nice job with getting a bit more on plane going back. The club isn’t going nearly as much to the inside which is good. I’d take screenshots of where you are at A2 and keep tracking that so you can be sure you are starting back on plane. Overall, you are trending the right way here! I don’t really think the head movement is anything to be focusing on. If anything, it is a symptom of the OTT move and not a cause. The more important thing to notice about the transition is the shoulder move and what exactly it is accomplishing and then working back from that a little bit to find the root cause. What I see is a shoulder move in transition that is a compensation for your pretty flat shoulder turn. Look at how flat your shoulders are at the top of the backswing and then look at how much steeper they get right after you start the transition. The answer to this might very well be what @iacas was suggesting by nudging you towards working on your torso turn in the early backswing. That should help get your shoulder turn to be a bit steeper. Before you start true downswing/transition thoughts or work: backswing, backswing, backswing.

Shot a 94 at Quicksilver. This course is used for Senior PGA events and was used for Web.com events. Instead of the “bump the left knee” feel to start the downswing, I started coming up with a feel that had some direction to it in terms of how the knee worked. To put words to the feel, I’d say “drive the knee forward and down at a 45 degree angle”. I actually started puring some irons. I really really liked this feel. Helps with the weight shift and working down to the ball a bit more. I could feel my low point shift an inch or two forward AND down which made all the difference. The greens were like glass.

Setup: get back to the 60/40 weight distribution feel at address. Helps reign in the pressure shift. More neutral spine position (touched on this before). Hands more forward to increase shaft lean a bit at address which was decreased due to shifting the spine to be more neutral. Going to get away from the lateral move off of the ball for now. The new more active lower body seems like it is doing some stuff to that affect without me even trying. I need to be getting weight and pressure back to the lead side so much earlier. My recentering and shift back to the lead side is happening at the top of the backswing...not good. I’d love to get a session on a SwingCatalyst, because besides what I *think* I see in video I’m clueless as to where and when my pressure is shifting.
-
In terms of swinging around the spine on the backswing (or more precisely maintaining your inclination to the ground), there really isn’t that much more to it than that. Also, the takeaway looks much improved. Nice job.
